According to a study by the World Obesity Federation, a partner of WHO, more than half of the world population will be overweight or obese by 2035 and the healthcare cost of obesity will increase and reach 4.32 trillion USD annually.&nbsp;
Since, 1975 there has been no decline in obesity in any country. And, in India according to National Family Health Survey, there has been a significant rise in obesity. The proportion of men that are obese has increased from 9.3 per cent in 2006 to 22.9 per cent in 2021. For women, the increase has been from 12.6 to 24 per cent during the same period.
Another study points out that the prevalence of obesity and overweight will likely cost the global economy 3.3 per cent of GDP by 2060.&nbsp;
The estimated economic cost of obesity for India is estimated to be 8.43 billion USD as healthcare costs by 2035, while others comprise 109.38 billion USD (in premature mortality) 176.32 million USD (as direct non-medical costs), 2.23 billion dollars (absenteeism) and 9.10 billion dollars for reduced productivity.&nbsp;
Experts believe that sedentary lifestyle is a major reason behind the increase in obesity. Changing food habits and consuming refined and processed foods are the primary cause of obesity.&nbsp;

Manage your weight
Excess fat promotes inflammation and insulin resistance, which significantly increases the risk of diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends that people with prediabetes should lose at least 7% to 10% of their body weight to prevent disease progression.
Stay active
Performing physical activity on a regular basis may help prevent diabetes. Working your muscles more often and making them work harder improves their ability to use insulin and absorb glucose. Try to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week.
Tune-up your diet
Dietary changes can have a huge impact on the risk of diabetes. Your diet should include smaller portions along with less fat and sugar. Eat a variety of foods from each food group, including plenty of whole grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables. Limit red and processed meat and opt for fish instead.
Quit smoking
Do you know smokers are roughly 50 percent more likely to develop diabetes than non-smokers? A recent study published in the Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology &amp; Metabolism stated that women with obesity might pass on the disease's risk to their daughters but not to their sons.&nbsp;
The researchers measured body fat and muscle in 240 children (9 years old or younger) and their parents. They used data to determine the body mass index, the amount of body fat and muscle in the children and the parents.&nbsp;
It was found that girls had a similar BMI and fat mass as their mothers and inherit a high risk of developing obesity or being overweight from them. The research did not find the same thing between boys and their mothers.&nbsp;

The study was conducted on 10,000 participants. The research used Mendelian randomisation, a method of establishing cause and effect through genetic evidence to calculate caffeine levels in blood.
Hence, it was concluded that higher concentrations of caffeine were associated with lower body mass index(BMI), healthy weight, better metabolism, and fat burn and were also linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

According to the fifth round of NFHS conducted between 2019 and 2021, about 6.4 percent women and 4 percent men in the age group of 15-49 are obese. About 17.6 percent women and 18.9 percent men in the same age group are overweight but not obese. This means that almost a quarter of young women in India are overweight.&nbsp;

According to the survey, in 2019-21, on an average, 12.6 per cent women in the top wealth group in India were found to be obese. Age was also taken into consideration in the survey and it found that 11 percent women between ages 40 and 49 are overweight.&nbsp;

According to a recent UN report, the number of undernourished people in India has declined to 224.3 million in 2019&ndash;21 from 247.8 million in 2004-06.

According to a recent UN report, the number of undernourished people in India declined by 60 million in over a decade. It reduced from 249.4 million (21.7 per cent) in 2004-06 to 189.2 million (14 per cent) in 2017-19.&nbsp;
However, there was a rise in the obesity level as more Indian adults have grown obese between 2012-19 (from 3.1 per cent to 3.9 per cent).&nbsp;
Globally, the number of people affected by hunger rose to 828 million in 2021, an increase of about 46 million since the outbreak of the pandemic, the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2022 report suggested.&nbsp;
The report also added that people who were unable to afford a healthy diet touched 973.3 million in 2020 up from 948.6 million in 2019. &nbsp;Almost 3.1 billion people could not afford a healthy diet in 2020, reflecting the effects of inflation in consumer food prices and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

Smoking
Tobacco has been proven a carcinogen for over decades and smokers have a 1 in 3-lifetime&nbsp;risk of dying prematurely from tobacco-related heart diseases, cancers or lung diseases. It causes cancers of the lungs, oropharynx (throat), larynx (vocal cords), esophagus (food pipe), kidney, bladder, colon (intestine), pancreas, and stomach.
Those who stop smoking have a 30-50% lower 10-year lung cancer mortality as compared to the ones who continue to smoke.
Obesity
Obesity and a high-fat diet has&nbsp;proven to cause various cancers, around 4% cases of&nbsp;cancer&nbsp;worldwide are caused due&nbsp;to obesity. These are mostly seen in 50-60 years of the&nbsp;population but are rising amongst the young too.&nbsp;Obesity-related cancers include colorectal cancer, female breast cancer, cancer of the uterus and gallbladder.&nbsp;
As per studies, decreased consumption of processed food, meat and high caloric diet can prevent such cancers. Adequate physical activity&nbsp;and&nbsp;a diet rich in fibre can also be beneficial to prevent&nbsp;such cancers.
Alcohol
Recent research has proven that alcohol is responsible for over 3 million deaths each year, worldwide of which 4 lakh&nbsp;people die due to cancer. Alcohol can increase the risk of 7 different types of cancer, breast, bowel, oral, esophageal, laryngeal, pharyngeal and liver.
Pollutants
Air pollution, toxins from industrial waste, highly processed foods, and exposure to&nbsp;plastic&nbsp;increase the risk of lung, stomach and colon cancer. Recent studies have proven that the occurrence of lung cancers in non-smokers is linked to passive smoking or air pollution. Drinking water exposed to heavy industrial wastes and metals can increase this risk too.

Participants reported their dietary patterns detailing all food consumed and at what hour of the day. They were also asked about their average amount of nightly sleep.
The findings suggested that people who miss the recommended seven or more hours of sleep per night might make poorer snacking choices. As per the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society, less sleep is associated with a number of health problems, including weight gain and obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

According to the US National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), reheating of cooking oil leads to the release of toxic substances that are harmful to human life. It can also cause&nbsp;major chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension and cardiac problems. Other health risks involved with eating food made in reheated cooking oil include acidity, obesity, increased cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
As per Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) guidelines, re-heating oil should be strictly avoided and in case you have to reuse it, a maximum of three times is permitted to avoid the formation of trans-fat. However, the number of times that one can safely reuse oil depends on what kind of food is being fried in it, what temperature was it heated to and for how long.
Therefore, it is advised to use a limited quantity of oil for cooking and frying to prevent wastage and further risk of re-use that comes with its set of side effects.

A new study, presented at the virtual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, found that teens who spent more than 2 hours per day on their smartphones were more likely to eat processed foods and fewer fruits and vegetables.
During the study, researchers tracked the health of more than 53,000 South Korean adolescents, aged 12 to 18. The team found that those who spent more than two hours a day on their smartphone were much more likely to eat larger amounts of junk food, while consuming fewer fruits and vegetables, compared to those who spent less time on their phones. The findings also showed that teens who spent more than three hours a day on a smartphone were significantly more likely to be overweight or obese.
According to the research, the reasons teens used their phones appeared to matter, too. Those who did more information searches and retrieval on their phones had healthier eating behaviors versus those who used their phones more for chatting/messenger, gaming, video/music and social networking.
The study couldn't prove a cause-and-effect relationship. But as per researchers, less time spent on phones and more time being active could turn weight gain into healthy weight maintenance.
