An 18-year-old NEET aspirant from Bihar allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room here in the early hours of Tuesday, police said.
In a suicide note recovered from his room, the student said neither his family nor his preparation for NEET-UG was the reason behind his extreme step, police said.
The student, a native of Chapra in Bihar, was preparing for NEET-UG at a coaching institute here for around a year and living in a hostel in the Landmark City area, Circle Inspector, Kunhadi police station, Arvind Bhardwaj said.
Before taking the extreme step, the student sent a WhatsApp message to his sister, who then called the hostel caretaker and asked him to check her brother's room, Bharadwaj said.
The caretaker knocked on the door of the teenager's room but did not receive any response. He then informed police, who rushed to the spot and broke open the door. The student was found hanging inside the room, the circle inspector said.
Though the ceiling fan in the hostel room was equipped with an anti-suicide device, the student managed to tie the rope that he used to hang himself to an iron hook above the device, he added.
A suicide note was recovered from the room. In the note, the student said that neither his family nor NEET was to be blamed for his decision. He, however, did not disclose the reason, Bhardwaj said.
He said the student also requested that his name, family details or photograph not be shared with the media, he said.
The reason behind the student's extreme step is yet to be ascertained, he added.
Bhardwaj said the body has been kept at the MBS Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, which will be conducted after his family members reach here.
This is the 11th suicide by a student in Kota, the country's coaching hub, this year. The number stood at 17 last year.

The CBI has arrested two more persons, including a candidate, from Patna in the NEET-UG paper leak case, taking the total number of arrests by the agency to 11, officials said on Tuesday.
This is the first time the CBI has arrested a candidate in connection with the alleged irregularities in NEET-UG, they said.
NEET-UG aspirant Sunny, who hails from Nalanda, and the father of another candidate Ranjit Kumar, who is from Gaya, have been arrested, they said.
The CBI has so far arrested eight people in the Bihar NEET-UG paper leak case, one each in connection with alleged exam manipulation in Gujarat's Latur and Godhra, and one from Dehradun in connection with general conspiracy, the officials said.
The agency had earlier arrested the principal and vice principal of Jharkhand's Hazaribagh-based Oasis school in the case and two persons who allegedly provided safe premises to NEET candidates where burnt question papers were recovered by the Bihar Police.
The CBI, which is probing the alleged irregularities in the medical entrance exam, has registered six FIRs.
The FIR from Bihar pertains to paper leaks while the remaining from Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra are linked to the impersonation of candidates and cheating.
The agency's own FIR on a reference from the Union Education Ministry pertains to a "comprehensive investigation" into the alleged irregularities in the examination.
NEET-UG is conducted by the NTA for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions. This year, the exam was conducted on May 5 at 4,750 centres in 571 cities, including 14 abroad. More than 23 lakh candidates had appeared for the test.

The Centre on Wednesday told the Supreme Court there was neither any indication of "mass malpractice" nor a localised set of candidates being benefitted leading to abnormal scores in NEET-UG 2024.
It said the data analytics of results of NEET-UG 2024 was conducted by IIT Madras and as per the findings given by the experts, the marks distribution follows the bell-shaped curve that is witnessed in any large-scale examination indicating no abnormality.
In an additional affidavit filed in the apex court, the Centre said for 2024-25, the counselling process for undergraduate seats will be conducted in four rounds starting from the third week of July.
Meanwhile, the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the prestigious test, also filed a separate additional affidavit in the top court and said it has carried out an analysis of distribution of marks in NEET-UG 2024 at the national, state, city and centre level.
"This analysis indicates that the distribution of marks is quite normal and there seems to be no extraneous factor, which would influence the distribution of marks," the NTA said in its affidavit, which also gave details about the system in place for ensuring confidential printing of question papers, its transportation and distribution.
A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud is scheduled to hear on Thursday a batch of pleas related to the controversy-ridden medical entrance exam NEET-UG 2024, including those alleging irregularities and malpractices in the May 5 test and seeking a direction to conduct it afresh.
While hearing the matter on July 8, the apex court had observed that sanctity of NEET-UG 2024 has been "breached".
In its additional affidavit filed on Wednesday, the Centre said pursuant to the apex court's direction, the Ministry of Education had made a request to the Director of IIT Madras to undertake comprehensive data analytics of the result of candidates who appeared in NEET-UG 2024.
"It is submitted that pursuant thereto an exhaustive and elaborate technical evaluation of the data pertaining to the NEET-UG 2024 examination was carried out by IIT Madras, using the parameters like marks distribution, city-wise and centre-wise rank distribution and candidates spread over marks-range, and the following findings have been given by the experts of the IIT Madras&hellip;," it said.
The affidavit said as per findings given by IIT Madras, the marks distribution follows the bell-shaped curve that is witnessed in any large-scale examination indicating no abnormality. "The analysis shows that there is neither any indication of mass malpractice nor a localised set of candidates being benefitted leading to abnormal scores," it said, while quoting the findings given by the experts of IIT Madras.
The affidavit said as per findings given by the experts of IIT Madras, there is an overall increase in the marks obtained by the students, specifically in the range of 550 to 720.
"This increase is seen across the cities and centres. This is attributed to 25 per cent reduction in syllabus. In addition, candidates obtaining such high marks are spread across multiple cities and multiple centers, indicating very less likelihood of malpractice," it said. Regarding counselling, the Centre said for 2024-25, the counselling process will be conducted in four rounds starting from the third week of July.
"For any candidate, if it is found that he/she has been the beneficiary of any malpractice, candidature of such person would be cancelled at any stage during the counselling process or even afterwards," it said.
The Centre said in respect of steps which are required to be taken in future to ensure that exam process is made more robust and insulant to any kind of malpractice, it has established a high-level committee of experts to recommend effective measures for the conduct of transparent, smooth and fair examinations by the NTA.
The NEET-UG 2024 was taken up on May 5 by 23.33 lakh students at 4,750 centres in 571 cities, including in 14 cities overseas.
The Centre and the NTA, in their earlier affidavits filed in the apex court, had said that scrapping the exam would be "counterproductive" and "seriously jeopardise" lakhs of honest candidates in the absence of any proof of large-scale breach of confidentiality.
The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) is conducted by the NTA for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country.

The Supreme Court on the 8th of July said that it was not completely against conducting a re-exam of the NEET-UG paper, but stressed that it should be the last resort.
While hearing a clutch of petitions seeking a re-test of the medical entrance examination, the bench led by Chief Justice Chandrachud observed that there was a need to gauge the extent of the paper leak as it could also impact the honest students.
The court also acknowledged that questions were leaked on social media and via popular messaging apps like Telegram and WhatsApp at least 24 hours before the May 5 exam, but pointed to a lack of clarity over its spread.&nbsp;
"One thing is clear... questions were leaked. The sanctity of the exam has been compromised... This is beyond doubt. Now we have to establish the extent of the leak," the Chief Justice said.
"We have to be careful while ordering a re-test. We are dealing with the careers of lakhs of students."
"You don't cancel because some students cheated. We must be careful..."
The apex court has also asked the Centre and the National Testing Agency to respond to certain specific queries and posted the matters for further hearing on July 11.&nbsp;
The Court also asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a status report on the investigation into the paper leak cases.
It said the NTA must disclose about the steps taken so far for identification of beneficiaries of wrongdoings.
Referring to legal position on ordering re-test, the top court said it will have to be "scrutinised whether the alleged breach has taken place at systemic level, whether the breach has affected integrity of the entire exam process and whether it is possible to segregate the beneficiaries of fraud from the untainted students".
"In a situation where breach affects the entirety of process and it is not possible to segregate the beneficiaries from others, it may be necessary to order a re-test," said the bench, also comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
It said the NTA must disclose about the steps taken so far for identification of beneficiaries of wrongdoings.

Amidst the controversy over the NEET paper leak, the central government informed the Supreme Court on the 5th of July that it would not be rational to scrap the medical entrance examination and hold a re-test.&nbsp;
In an affidavit, the government affirmed that there were no large-scale irregularities in the exam.
The government further said that cancelling the exam would jeopardise the future of lakhs of students who attempted the exam with honesty.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Scrapping exam in entirety would jeopardise lakhs of honest candidates,&rdquo; it said in the affidavit. &nbsp; The Centre has further stated that the CBI has been tasked with investigating the full range of allegations regarding alleged irregularities, including conspiracy, cheating, impersonation, and breach of trust.
"The Union of India duly appreciates that the confidentiality of the question papers is the utmost priority in any examination and that if, due to some criminality at the behest of some criminal elements, the confidentiality has been breached, the Union of India submits that the said person must be dealt with sternly and with the full force of law to ensure that they are punished," the affidavit said.
The top court is scheduled to hear on July 8 a batch of pleas, including those alleging irregularities in the examination held on May 5 and seeking a direction that it be conducted afresh.
Allegations of irregularities, including paper leaks, have led to protests in several cities and sparring between rival political parties.

It is unfortunate that we weren&rsquo;t allowed to do so in Parliament today. This is a serious concern that is causing anxiety to lakhs of families across India," the Congress leader said.
"We urge the Prime Minister to debate on this issue and give the students the respect they deserve," he said. &nbsp;In the video, Gandhi said the message is for all the students, who gave the NEET exam or any other exam, and said that the opposition wanted to discuss the issue but was not allowed to do so by the government.
Gandhi said the INDIA bloc parties had unanimously decided to raise the issue on Friday. &nbsp;"There was a unanimous agreement among all opposition parties that yes, a one day discussion on NEET is required and we are committed to having that discussion peacefully in a very very accommodating manner. I tried to raise it in Parliament, of course I was not allowed to speak. This is an issue that has affected two crore students," he said.
The Leader of Opposition said that 70 papers have been leaked in the last seven years. &nbsp;"It is clear there is a systemic problem. It is clear there is a huge amount of corruption and we simply cannot continue like this," Gandhi said. &nbsp;"Also the students want a resolution quickly. The idea behind the discussion was to get a resolution to this issue. It is unfortunate the government didn't want it. It seemed to me the direction was directly from the Prime Minister." "It is sad the Prime Minister of India, who should be leading the discussion and should be telling us about his opinion and what he is going to do, simply doesn't want a debate. We don't want to fight the government, we want to place our views on the table," he said.
The INDIA bloc parties on Friday gave adjournment motion notices in the Lok Sabha and notices under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha to take up a discussion on the NEET issue. &nbsp;Amid vociferous protest by the opposition, the Lok Sabha was adjourned little after 12 noon.&nbsp;
The Rajya Sabha saw protests and more than one adjournments before the opposition MPs staged a walkout as the Chairman refused to adjourn the House after Congress MP Phulo Devi Netam fainted and was taken to the hospital.&nbsp; (PTI)

Leaders of the INDIA Opposition bloc have decided to raise the NEET issue in both houses of Parliament on Friday and members will give notices in this regard, sources have said.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the INDIA bloc floor leaders on Thursday, they said, adding that Opposition members are set to file adjournment notices in the Lok Sabha and under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha.
The leaders of various parties have also decided to hold a protest on Monday morning before the parliamentary proceedings start, raising the issue of "political vendetta" against opposition leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren and three West Bengal ministers, using agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and income-tax department, the sources said.
The leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) met at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence here. Besides Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Supriya Sule (both from the NCP-SP), Derek O'Brien (TMC), Sanjay Raut, Priyanka Chaturvedi (Shiv Sena-UBT), Sanjay Singh, Sandeep Pathak (both AAP), N K Premchandran (RSP) and Mahua Majhi (JMM) were present on the occasion.
Gandhi later said in a Facebook post that he attended the floor leaders' meeting.
"All of us are committed to unitedly raising the issues concerning people and fight for their rights," the Congress leader said in the post in Hindi.
The opposition leaders discussed a range of issues that will be jointly raised in both houses of Parliament. The issues include unemployment, price rise, misuse of central agencies, breakdown of institutions, the NEET exams and paper leaks.
With the INDIA bloc parties demanding the appointment of a deputy speaker in the Lok Sabha from the opposition ranks, the sources said they would press for their demand strongly and discuss the names for the post soon.
They are of the view that the deputy speaker's post should go to any of the principal opposition parties like the Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), Trinamool Congress (TMC) or DMK.
"Floor leaders of INDIA parties met at INC President Sh. Mallikarjun Kharge ji's residence to chalk out the strategy for the rest of the Parliament session," Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said in a post on X.

The government is fully committed to investigating the recent incidents of paper leaks and ensure that the guilty are punished, President Droupadi Murmu said in her address to a joint sitting of Parliament.
Addressing the 18th Lok Sabha for the first time, the president said her government is working to create an environment to enable youth of the country dream big and achieve them.
As she mentioned steps taken by the government on the education front, some opposition members were heard shouting "NEET".
"If due to any reason there is obstruction in examinations it is not appropriate. Sanctity, transparency are a must in government recruitments and examinations," she said.
"The government is committed to conduct fair investigation and ensure the most stringent punishment to those guilty in the recent incidents of paper leak," she said.
There were incidents of paper leaks in some states earlier as well, the president said, stressing that there is need to rise above partisan politics and take strong steps at the national level.
The president added that Parliament has also made a strong law against paper leaks.
She added that the government is working to bring reforms in the examination process.

According to a Times of India report, several students who fared poorly in the medical test, excelled in their second attempts.

Rahul Gandhi said that Modi is completely helpless in front of the paper leak racket and education mafia.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday over the postponement of the NEET-PG, saying it was yet "another unfortunate example that the education system has been ruined". The Union Health Ministry said on Saturday that it has decided to postpone the NEET-PG entrance examination, scheduled to be held on June 23, as a "precautionary measure" in the wake of recent allegations on the integrity of certain competitive exams.
In a post in Hindi on 'X', Gandhi said, "Now NEET-PG is also postponed. This is another unfortunate example of the education system that has been ruined under the rule of Narendra Modi." Under the BJP's rule, instead of building their careers by studying, students are forced to fight the government to save their future, he said.
"Now it is clear -- Modi, who used to silently watch the spectacle every time -- is completely helpless in front of the paper leak racket and education mafia," the former Congress chief said. "Narendra Modi's incompetent government is the biggest threat to the future of students. We have to save the future of the country from it," he added.
Facing flak over alleged irregularities in competitive exams, the Centre on Saturday shunted out National Testing Agency (NTA) Director General Subodh Singh and set up a seven-member panel headed by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan to review the agency's functioning and recommend exam reforms.
On Friday, the June edition of the Joint Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (CSIR-UGC-NET) was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances and logistic issues. On Wednesday, UGC-NET was cancelled following inputs that the exam's integrity was compromised.
Opposition parties have also claimed irregularities in the medical entrance exam NEET-UG, the results of which were announced by NTA on June 4. A probe into the alleged irregularities in this exam has been handed over to CBI.

The allegations of irregularities have led to protests in several cities and sparring between political parties.

The Centre on Saturday night announced that the probe into alleged irregularities in the medical entrance exam NEET will be handed over to the CBI for a comprehensive investigation.
The development came amid a flurry of decisions over alleged irregularities in competitive exams, including the removal of National Testing Agency (NTA) Director General Subodh Singh and setting up of a seven-member panel headed by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan for exam reforms.
"Certain cases of alleged irregularities, cheating, impersonation and malpractices have been reported in NEET-UG which was conducted on May 5.
"For transparency on the conduct of the examination process, it was decided after a review that the matter be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for comprehensive investigation," a senior Education Ministry official said.
The government is committed to ensuring the sanctity of examinations and protecting the interest of students, the official said, adding any individual and organisation found to be involved in irregularities will face the strictest action.
The examination was held on May 5 across 4,750 centres and around 24 lakh candidates appeared. The results were expected to be declared on June 14 but were announced on June 4.
The allegations of irregularities have led to protests in several cities, litigation and sparring between rival political parties.
A fresh plea was filed in the Supreme Court seeking directions to the CBI and the ED to investigate the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG.
The petition, filed by 10 students who had appeared for the exam, has also sought a direction to Bihar Police to expedite the investigation in the case and file a report before the apex court.
The top court had earlier sought responses from the Centre, the NTA and others on a slew of petitions, including those seeking scrapping of the NEET-UG 2024 exam and a court-monitored probe.
The apex court had also stayed further proceedings on similar pleas pending before different high courts.
As many as 67 students scored a perfect 720, unprecedented in the NTA's history, with six from a centre in Haryana's Faridabad figuring in the list, raising suspicions about irregularities.
There was also controversy over grace marks awarded to students to make up for the loss of time at six centres. The Centre later told the apex court that the grace marks are being scrapped and these students would be given an option of a retest.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) will on Sunday conduct the retest for these 1,563 candidates.
The NEET-UG examination is conducted by the NTA for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country.

The top court observed that even if there is 0.001% negligence on the part of anyone, it should be thoroughly dealt with.&nbsp;
"Children have prepared for the exams, we cannot forget their labour," said the court.

How the controversy erupted?

What is the reason behind record number of toppers?
In the NEET-UG 2023-24, as many as 1563 candidates were awarded grace marks for various reasons. Out of the 67 toppers, 50 were those who received grace marks which helped them score the perfect marks. 44 toppers were awarded grace marks on account of revision in one Answer Key of Physics due to inconsistencies in NCERT textbooks. Six other candidates got it on account of compensatory marks for loss of time during the exams at various centres. This was done as students from at least six centres had complained they did not get the full 3 hours and 20 minutes to write the exam. The remaining 17 toppers bagged the spot on merit as per the NTA.
Allegations of paper leak
There have been allegations of paper leak too. The Bihar Police last month said that its investigation has revealed that the question papers and answers for NEET-UG were provided to approximately 35 aspirants before the exam. Thirteen individuals have been arrested so far in connection with the case.
NTA's stand on allegations
NTA has rejected the allegations of paper leak and maintained that the sanctity of the exam has not been compromised. It attributed the rise in the number of top scorers to increase in the competitiveness of the exam and increase in performance standards.
Supreme Court ruling
The Supreme Court sided with the NTA and refused to stay the counselling process for admissions. The court was told that the 1563 candidates who received grace marks will have to take retest, the results of which will be declared ahead of the counselling.
Protests and political slugfest
The allegations of paper leak and other irregularities have sparked protests, with many students demanding a retest for all and a thorough investigation. Various opposition political parties, including Congress, DMK and Aam Aadmi Party, have targeted the BJP-led central government over the issue. They have demanded cancellation of the exam and a Supreme Court-monitored probe into it.
