The Bairabi-Sairang railway line connecting Aizawl to India&rsquo;s rail network is ready. Built at Rs 8,000 crore, it includes 48 tunnels and a record-high bridge.

To connect Mizoram's capital Aizawl to the railway network, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) sourced construction material and labour force from across the country.
The 52-km Bairabi-Sairang (near Aizawl) rail line, built at a cost of approximately Rs 8,000 crore, is ready and will soon be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Vinod Kumar, chief engineer of the project, said his team ordered almost all construction material from other states.
"Crushed stones were brought from Assam, West Bengal and Jharkhand. We purchased sand from Silchar and Guwahati. We sourced reinforcement rods from Kolkata and bent them near the highway as carrying them to the construction site was not possible due to their length. Then, we straightened them for use at the site," he said.
"Small vehicles cannot carry 12-ft-long rods and big vehicles cannot ply on these roads," he added.
According to Kumar, steel girders used for the project were manufactured in Raipur in Chhattisgarh, Kolkata in West Bengal, and Wardha and Ahmednagar in Maharashtra.
NFR officials said that carrying girders to the construction site posed a huge logistical challenge and several special arrangements had to be made.
"There are two approach roads to Guwahati from Aizawl and both often get closed due to landslides or poor conditions. So, we carried the girders up to Bairabi using the rail network and then took them to the site by making special transportation arrangements," Kumar elaborated.
"Cranes were dismantled to take them to the site to place these girders on the bridge. A day's work took more than a month to complete due to all these reasons," he said.
Both skilled and unskilled labourers who worked on the project were from West Bengal, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, he added.
According to the officials, with the completion of the Bairabi-Sairang line, Mizoram will be the fourth northeastern state to have its capital city linked to the national railway network.
According to the NFR, the line has 48 tunnels covering a distance of 12.853 km, 55 major and 87 minor bridges, five road overbridges and nine road underbridges. One of the bridges, numbered 196, stands 104 metres tall -- 42 metres taller than the Qutub Minar.
The railway line was commissioned in four phases -- Bairabi-Hortoki (16.72 km) commissioned in July 2024, Hortoki-Kawnpui (9.71 km), Kawnpui-Mualkhang (12.11 km), and Mualkhang-Sairang (12.84 km), all three commissioned in June this year.

Mizoram has reported five deaths in the current wave of landslides, house collapse and other calamities triggered by heavy rains in the last 10 days, the state's Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department said on Tuesday.
Data shared by the department said that three people died in Champhai district and one each in Aizawl and Serchhip districts due to the collapse of houses and walls caused by landslides and flash floods.
The state also reported 552 landslides at several places, while 152 houses have collapsed or have been damaged due to rain during the same period, it said.
One hundred and ninety-eight families have abandoned their houses due to landslides or fissures and 92 others evacuated their homes due to floods, it said.
Of the total 11 districts, east Mizoram's Champhai district, which shares a border with Myanmar, faced the brunt of the current monsoon reporting three deaths, 209 landslides, 9 house damages and evacuation of 14 families, it said.
Serchhip district reported one fatality, 75 landslides, 27 house damages and 132 families abandoned their houses due to landslides, fissures and floods, the data said.
Eighteen landslides were reported in Aizawl district, while 13 houses have collapsed or have been damaged and 17 others have been abandoned, it said.
Khawzawl district reported 75 landslides, Lunglei district (60) and south Mizoram's Siaha district reported 53 landslides, it said.
At least 29 houses collapsed or were damaged in Siaha district, 23 in Kolasib district, 18 in Lunglei district and 9 in Khawzawl district, the data said.
All schools in the state except those in Saitual district remained shut on Tuesday due to rain.
Officials said that more than a hundred trucks carrying essential commodities to the southern districts were stranded in Serchhip.
A report by the IMD said that Aizawl district received 253.7 mm of rainfall in the last three days, followed by Khawzawl district 248.33 mm and Siaha district received 241.5 mm of rainfall during the same period.
Light to moderate rainfall is predicted in the coming five days, the report said.

School Education Department Director Angela Zothanpuii said that all the 11 district administrations announced the closure of schools on Monday as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the students.
The notifications issued by the district administrations said that the school closure directive comes following alarming weather forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which predicted further heavy rainfall and possible natural hazards, including landslides, mudflows, and rockfalls across several parts of the state.
Earlier, schools were closed across the state for two days on May 29 and May 30.
Although there was no rain, the state capital Aizawl experienced cloudy weather on Monday morning.
At least five people, including three Myanmarese refugees, have been killed so far due to landslides, house collapses and other calamities triggered by heavy rain that lashed the state since May 24.
Officials of the state Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department said that 60 houses have collapsed or have been damaged, and 69 others have been vacated due to landslides or mudslides and floods across the state so far.
A total of 211 landslides have been reported in different parts of the state till Sunday, and highways have been blocked at 83 locations, they said.
Officials of the state power department said that at least seven 33 KV sub-stations have been damaged and more than one-third area of the entire state is facing power outages due to rain.
Restoration works are underway and power is expected to be restored in such areas within the next two-three days if there is no further rain, they said.
The State Public Health Engineering Department also said that water supply has been disrupted in around 50 places and water pumping machines, which feed Kolasib and Hnahthial towns and Keitum village in Serchhip district, have been submerged under water.
An IMD report said that Serchhip district received the highest amount of rainfall in the last 24 hours at 10.46 cm, followed by Kolasib (9.83 cm) and Aizawl (9.74 cm).
Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in the state on Monday, it said.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Sunday held an emergency meeting with ministers and senior officials in the wake of landslides and waterlogging triggered by heavy rains.
The meeting agreed to take stringent measures regarding construction and building plans as it was observed that several incidents were caused due to human error.
The meeting decided to facilitate the immediate release of funds to district disaster management authorities to enable them to expedite various work. Detailed reports of calamities and the challenges faced by the state government in the wake of heavy rain would be submitted to the Centre as soon as possible.
They also agreed to give priority to highways connecting district headquarters and Lengpui airport to ensure that connectivity was not disrupted.

At least 17 people, including two minors, were killed and six-seven others were missing as a stone quarry collapsed in Mizoram's Aizawl district on Tuesday morning amid incessant rain as an impact of cyclone Remal, officials said.
Several other people also went missing in landslides elsewhere in the state capital which was cut off from the rest of the country.
The incident happened around 6 am in an area between Melthum and Hlimen on the southern outskirts of Aizawl town.
"We have recovered 17 bodies so far and the rescue operations are going on. We suspect that 6-7 more people are still trapped under the rubble," Mizoram Director General of Police Anil Shukla told PTI.
He said that heavy rain was affecting rescue operations at the disaster site.
The rain triggered landslides at several other places in the state and at least two persons have been "swept away", Shukla said.
Aizawl's Deputy Commissioner Nazuk Kumar said that the search operations will continue till the entire site is cleared.
A four-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl are among the victims of the stone quarry collapse, another police officer said.
"We have also rescued two persons alive from the site," he said.
A landslide swept away a building in Aizawl's Salem Veng, following which three persons went missing. Search is underway for them, an official said.
The state capital has been cut off from the rest of the country due to a landslide on National Highway 6 at Hunthar, officials said.
Besides, several intra-state highways have also been disrupted by landslides, they said.

The counting was supposed to happen on Sunday along with Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana. However, it was deferred by the Election Commission following appeals by political parties, NGOs, churches and students' bodies as Sunday holds a special significance for the people of Mizoram, a Christian-majority state.
As per the exit polls projection, there is going to be a showdown between the regional heavyweights MNF and ZPM.&nbsp;
Mizoram is a Christian-majority state. Zoramthanga of the MNF became Chief Minister after the 1998 Assembly polls, ending Congress's 10-year rule. The MNF governed for a decade until Congress won in 2008 and 2013. Returning to power in 2018, MNF aims for another victory in the 40-member Assembly this year.

Explained: why are Mizoram churches holding prayers for change in counting date

The Christian groups said that the Election Commission allowed them to meet the chief election commissioner and other officials on Tuesday at 3 pm.

Churches in Mizoram held prayers to seek divine intervention to change the date of counting of votes for state assembly polls held on November 7, a church leader said on Sunday.
On Saturday, Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a conglomerate of 15 major churches, had urged churches to organise prayers during church service on Saturday night or Sunday to seek help from God so that counting is not held on Sunday, which is a sacred day for the majority of Christians in the state, the leader said.
He said that prayers were held by some churches on Saturday night, while others on Sunday.
In its letter to churches, the MKHC had expressed disappointment over no sign of progress in the efforts to reschedule the date of counting of votes.
Citing that leaders of the NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC) will meet the Election Commission on November 28, the MKHC urged church members to hold prayers to ensure that the efforts of the leaders bear fruit.
Mizoram Presbyterian Church, the largest denomination in the state, also separately urged its members to hold prayers to ensure that the date of counting is changed.
Meanwhile, a five-member delegation of NGOCC, currently camping in Delhi, will meet Chief Election Commissioner and other officials of the Election Commission on Tuesday to re-appeal and press its demand for a change of date for counting of votes.

The committee general secretary Malsawmliana said that the delegation visited the ECI office on Friday seeking an appointment.
He said that the Election Commission allowed them to meet the chief election commissioner and other officials on Tuesday at 3 pm.
The ECI had fixed December 3 as the day for counting of votes for five states - Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Telangana.
However, political parties, civil society organisations, churches and a church-sponsored poll watchdog in Mizoram had opposed it and sent numerous pleas to the Election Commission urging it to reschedule the counting date because it falls on Sunday, a sacred day for Christians in the Christian-majority state.

'Best campaign of my life': Tharoor dances to 'secret crush' in Mizoram capital Aizawl

&nbsp;It was all about 'secret crush' as Congress leader Shashi Tharoor hummed, clapped and danced to a famous Mizo song, and had the "most fun election campaign" of his entire political career.
The flamboyant leader may not have understood the language of the song 'Di Ruk Te', meaning 'secret crush', sung by popular Mizo singer Sangtei Khuptong, but that did not deter him from shaking a leg, along with state Congress president Lalsawta, on a stage in front of a packed audience at Vanapa Hall here on Saturday.
Khuptong was invited to sing a song in between the Congress MP's interactions with the citizens of Aizawl on the November 7 Mizoram elections.

Khuptong also invited the Kerala MP, Lalsawta and other senior Congress leaders on the stage to join her.
On the stage, Tharoor asked the meaning of the song and she explained it to him and other non-Mizo party officials.
"Do you have a secret crush?" Khuptong asked the Parliamentarian after telling him about the song.
"Who would not? Of course, I have," he replied amid a thunder of laughter.
Then she started singing the song and everyone on the stage started dancing to it. Tharoor was seen dancing, clapping and trying to hum the song. The audience too stood on their feet and joined the singer.
After Khuptong completed the song, Tharoor took the cordless microphone from her and thanked her for keeping his request to sing a Mizo song.
"You are fabulous. I must say, in 15 years of politics, this is the most fun I have had in a campaign," he said amid a huge round of applause from the audience, most of whom were youths.
In the interaction programme, people asked several questions to the senior Congress leader on a range of topics and he replied to them accordingly.
Tharoor arrived in Aizawl on Friday on a three-day visit to campaign for party candidates. He held a series of meetings with various sections of the society and also addressed a press conference. He will leave Mizoram on Sunday.
The Congress is contesting in all 40 constituencies of the state.&nbsp;

Over 30 polling centres in the state have been declared critical owing to the region sharing international border with Myanmar and Bangladesh.&nbsp;

Campaigning for the November 7 Mizoram assembly elections ended at 4pm on Sunday with no reports of any law and order problems throughout the month-long period, additional chief electoral officer H Lianzela said.
He asserted that any form of electioneering, public meetings, press conferences by political parties, interviews and panel discussions in the media have been strictly prohibited till voting is over.
Out of the 1,276 voting centres in the state, 149 are remote polling stations, Lianzela said, adding around 30 polling stations along the inter-state and international borders have been declared critical and vulnerable.
Security has been tightened across the state and along international borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar, a police officer said. Mizoram shares a 510km porous border with Myanmar and a 318km border with Bangladesh.
At least 3,000 policemen and 5,400 personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed for the polls, the officer added.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Kiren Rijiju visited the state and campaigned for BJP candidates.
BJP state president Vanlalhmuaka said the party will win 6-8 seats.
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh and Shashi Tharoor campaigned for party candidates.
During campaigning, ruling party MNF tried to capitalise on issue of refugees and internally displaced people from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur and Mizo sub-nationalism besides highlighting the development in the state over the last five years despite financial constraints triggered by the pandemic.
The opposition highlighted the failure of the MNF government in fulfilling its promises, including implementation of the flagship programme, Socio Economic Development (SEDP), construction of flyovers, good roads, among others.
The ZPM banked on its policy of change and introduction of a new system of governance.
More than 8.57 lakh electorates, including 4,39,026 women, will decide the fate of 174 candidates. Results are scheduled to be announced on December 3.

PM Modi is likely to visit Mamit town in the western part of the state on October 30, and campaign for the BJP candidates.
"The people of Mizoram are all Christians. When the people of Manipur (Meities) burned hundreds of churches in Manipur, they were (Mizos) totally against that kind of idea. To have sympathy with the BJP at this time will be a big minus point for my party," Zoramthanga told BBC News in an interview.
"It will be better if the prime minister comes alone and he shares the platform by himself, and I take the stage separately by myself," he said.
Zoramthanga's MNF is a part of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) and an ally of the NDA at the Centre. However, the party does not work with the BJP in Mizoram.
The chief minister said that the MNF joined the NDA and NEDA as it is totally against the Congress, and does not want to be part of any alliance led by it.
On giving shelter to people from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur, Zoramthanga said that the Mizoram government was following the footsteps of the Centre.
"The Indian government helped the refugees from the erstwhile East Pakistan and even armed them to attain independence. We don't arm the refugees from Myanmar but we simply provide them food and shelter on humanitarian grounds," he said.
More than 40,000 people from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur are taking shelter in the state.
Zoramthanga said that it was the responsibility of the Centre to restore peace in Manipur so that people can go back to their native state.
Mizoram will vote for its 40-member assembly on November 7, and the votes will be counted on December 3.

Answering a question the Uniform Civil Code, Gandhi said he can't say much on it as there was no clarity yet on the issue. He added that he would protect the rights and culture of the Mizos.
Gandhi said there are two Manipurs now - a Meitei Manipur and a Kuki Manipur. He criticised the PM for not visiting the state.

Indian Railways launched an investigation into the Mizoram bridge collapse that killed at least 22 workers.

A four-member committee has been set up by Indian Railways to investigate the recent <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/mizoram-17-dead-in-bridge-collapse-1692775550447">bridge collapse in Mizoram</a> that killed at least 22 workers.
The committee, which has experts from premier institutes and governmental branches, will have to submit a report a month after it is formed.
Railway officials attributed the bridge collapse to a faulty gantry that was set up to aid construction.
The four members of the committee are BP Awasthi of RDSO, Dr Dipti Ranjan Sahoo of IIT Delhi Sharad Kumar Agarwal of IRICEN and Sandeep Sharma, Chief Bridge Engineer, NF Railway, an order from Indian Railways said.
So far bodies of 22 persons have been recovered while three workers who were injured are in hospital. One worker is still missing and search operations are on for him, officials said.

The miscreants killed the three apparently for failing to return in full amount the money meant for purchasing weapons, the police officer said.

Charred bodies of three Mizoram residents, including a woman, were found in a jungle inside Myanmar near the international border, a senior police officer said on Friday.
The three had gone missing on March 19 after they set out for Myanmar from Ainak village in Siaha district.
They had been held hostage by miscreants, believed to be from Myanmar, who were once involved with a rebel group before they disassociated from it, Inspector General of Police (Law &amp; Order) Lalbiakthanga Khiangte told PTI.
The miscreants killed the three apparently for failing to return in full amount the money meant for purchasing weapons, the police officer said.
The charred bodies were recovered from a forest inside Myanmar about two kilometres from the international border on Thursday, he said.
"The perpetrators of the crime are believed to be from Myanmar. The state police have launched a manhunt for the miscreants,&rdquo; Khiangte said.
Mizoram shares a 510 km long international border with Myanmar.

In an order issued on January 31, the Mizoram government has reportedly directed authorities against issuing birth and death certificates to refugees and undocumented immigrants from countries such as Myanmar to ensure there are no claims of citizenship from them, Hindustan Times reported.&nbsp;
The order came amid an influx of refugees from Myanmar since March last year following the military coup in that country.
Around 40,000 people from Myanmar are estimated to be living in the state. Hundreds of refugees from Bangladesh have also recently entered Mizoram.

At least 12 people are feared trapped after a stone quarry collapsed in south Mizoram district, about 160 km from Aizawl, on Monday, a senior police officer said.

At least 12 people are feared trapped after a stone quarry collapsed in south Mizoram's Hnahthial district, about 160 km from Aizawl, on Monday, a senior police officer said.
The incident occurred at around 3 pm when labourers of ABCI Infrastructure private limited were working in the quarry at Maudarh village, Hnahthial, Superintendent of Police (SP), Vineet Kumar said.
He said that 13 people were working at the place when it caved in.
While one worker managed to escape from the spot the remaining 12 failed to do so and were trapped under the debris, the SP told PTI.
Rescue operation is in progress and and no person has been rescued from the debris till 7:30 pm, Kumar said.
Hnahthial district officials and a medical team also rushed to the spot soon after the incident.
People familiar with the incident said that loose soil caved in from the above while the labourers were breaking and collecting the stones at the quarry.
Volunteers of Young Mizo Association (YMA) from nearby villages also rushed to the spot for the rescue operation, they said.

Maudarh is a small hamlet located about 23 km away from Hnahthial town.
The company which is currently constructing a highway between Hnahthial and Dawn village, collects stones or boulders from the quarry.&nbsp;

As a video went viral purportedly showing the daughter of Mizoram's Chief Minister physically attacking a doctor, CM Zoramthanga issued a public apology.
In the video doing the rounds on social media, Milari Chhangte is allegedly seen hitting a dermatologist at a clinic on 17 August 2022. Chhangte allegedly hit the doctor after he asked her to take an appointment if she wanted to consult him, as per reports.
As the video went viral, the medical fraternity came out to support the doctor, and 800 doctors staged a protest on 20 August. In response, Mizoram CM issued an apology via his Instagram account.
Zoramthanga said, "We have nothing to justify or say in defence of our daughter's behaviour towards the doctor. We ask forgiveness from the doctor and the public." The CM also met the doctor to apologise for his daughter's behaviour. Zoramthanga also reportedly thanked the Indian Medical Association, or IMA, for not initiating "stringent" action against his daughter.
Earlier, Chhangte's brother had claimed that she "went out of control" due to mental stress.
