His People's National Congress has promised a boom in building apartments, bridges and new airports with Chinese funding.

The Maldives will press on with Chinese-backed construction and evict Indian troops from the strategically placed atoll nation, President Mohamed Muizzu's office said Tuesday, two days after his party's stunning parliamentary victory.
He thanked voters for the landslide victory by his People's National Congress, which promised a boom in building apartments, bridges and new airports with Chinese funding.
Muizzu, 45, won September presidential polls after vowing to evict 89 Indian troops deployed in the country.
The Indian contingent -- operating three aircraft patrolling the archipelago's vast maritime boundary -- is due to leave by May 10.
Muizzu consolidated his hold on power by winning more than two-thirds of the seats in Sunday's vote for the 93-member assembly.
"We will bid farewell to the enduring anguish of housing insecurity, a pressing and longstanding concern burdening the Maldivian populace," his office said, quoting his promise at a victory rally in Male on Monday.
He did not mention China or India by name, but said he will work towards ensuring that the Maldives' sovereignty is not compromised.
"It is important that Maldivians have sole authority over matters concerning our nation, to be addressed according to our desires," he said.
Muizzu previously declared that the deployment of Indian troops was an affront to the Maldivians, who he said were capable of patrolling their own waters without personnel from the regional powerhouse.
Muizzu's election pledges are expected to pull the nation of 1,192 tiny coral islands, scattered around 800 kilometres (500 miles) across the equator astride key international shipping lanes, significantly further into Beijing's sphere of influence.
He entered a raft of agreements with China in January to build about 30,000 apartments on an island to be reclaimed near the congested Maldivian capital Male.
The election, held under the shadow of rivalry between China and India, the Maldives' traditional benefactor, was a test of Muizzu's foreign policy shift.
Beijing has welcomed Muizzu's spectacular electoral success.
"China is willing to work with the Maldives to maintain traditional friendship (and) expand exchanges and cooperation in various fields," foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said Monday.
But Western nations, led by the United States, have warned that China's loan-funded infrastructure projects amount to a debt trap for developing nations.
The Maldives is also vulnerable to climate change, with the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warning in 2007 that rising sea levels could make it virtually uninhabitable by the end of the century.

After making derogatory remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suspended Maldivian minister Mariyam Shiuna yet again triggered a massive row for sharing a distorted image of the Indian flag on social media X.
Hours after she was called out by Indian netizens, Shiuna deleted the post and issued an apology.
The now-deleted post had featured the logo of the Maldivian Democratic Party&rsquo;s campaign poster replaced with the Ashok Chakra of the Tricolour, hinting at the opposition party's close ties with India.&nbsp;&nbsp;
"I would like to address a recent social media post of mine that has garnered attention and criticism. I extend my sincerest apologies for any confusion or offense caused by the content of my recent post," Mariyam Shiuna, who belongs to the same party as President of the Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, posted on X today.
"It was brought to my attention that the image used in my response to the Maldivian opposition party MDP bore a resemblance to the Indian flag. I want to make it clear that this was entirely unintentional, and I sincerely regret any misunderstanding it may have caused," she added.
"Maldives deeply value its relationship and, the mutual respect we share with India. In future I will be more vigilant in verifying the content I share to prevent such oversights," the former minister said.
This came months after she made derogatory remarks on Modi after his visit to Lakshwadeep, following which she was suspended after she faced severe backlash from Indian social media users.&nbsp;
The row comes amidst a diplomatic row between the two countries since November last year when President Mohamed Muizzu, known for his pro-China leanings, within hours of taking the oath demanded India to repatriate its 88 military personnel from his country.

Barely two months have passed since his ascension and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu is already fighting to remain at the helm.
On Monday, Maldivian opposition parties, MDP and Democrats, decided to file an impeachment motion against the country's leader who is perceived to be pro-China.
According to the constitution of Maldives, the removal of the president requires a resolution submitted by one-third of the parliament members, stating the reasons for removal.
The resolution must then receive the support of two-thirds of the total membership of the house. The president can be impeached with 54 votes.
One of the parliamentarians from the MDP told SunOnline outlet that they, in partnership with the other opposition party Democrats, have gathered enough signatures to set off an impeachment motion.

It comes days after Muizzu's visit to Beijing during which he, without referring to India, said that Maldives is not located in the backyard of any country.
"Even though our islands are small, we are a huge country with a very large exclusive economic zone of nine lakh square kilometers. Maldives is one country that holds the largest proportion of this ocean. This ocean is not the property of a specific country," he said while speaking to reporters at the Velana International Airport (VIA) on January 13.
"We have begun the work to build our power and our capacity to do continuous surveillance of the nine lakh square kilometer exclusive economic zone. Hopefully, soon we will establish our capacity to manage this vast area," he added.
After concluding his visit, Muizza, who is perceived to be pro-China, in a statement asked the Indian troops to leave Maldives territory by March 15.
The Indian contingent is currently in the Maldives for the operation and maintenance of two helicopters and a Dornier aircraft.

"MATATO humbly seeks your assistance and support in fostering positive relations and dispelling any misunderstandings that may have arisen and re-open EaseMyTrip flights to the Maldives."
&ldquo;We want you to know that the bonds connecting our nations transcend politics. We consider our Indian counterparts not just as business associates but as cherished brothers and sisters,&rdquo; it said in the letter.
Tourism our lifeblood
The association said that tourism "stands as the lifeblood of the Maldives, contributing over two-thirds of our GDP and providing livelihoods to approximately 44,000 Maldivians who work in the sector."&nbsp;
"The potential adverse impact on tourism holds the power to unleash severe repercussions on our economy," it added.
Calling Indian tourists "an indispensable force in the success of the Maldivian tourism sector", MATATO said that they play a vital role in supporting "guest houses and small to medium-sized enterprises..."

Indians top travellers' list&nbsp;&nbsp;
EasemyTrip had suspended flight bookings to Maldives via its website on Monday after three Maldivian ministers derogatory online posts against Modi over his visit to Lakshadweep.
In the last three years, Indians were the top visitors to the Maldives.&nbsp;
According to the Maldives Tourism Ministry statistics, over 17 lakh tourists visited the island nation in 2023, out of which more than 2,09,198 visitors were Indians followed by Russians (2,09,146) and China (1,87,118).
The number of Indian visitors was more than 2.4 lakh in 2022 while over 2.11 lakh Indians flew to the Maldives in 2021.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the three ministers&mdash; Maryam Shiuna, Malsha Shareef and Mahzoom Majid&mdash;who made the disparaging remarks were suspended after many Indians objected to their unsavory statements online, with many calling for a boycott of the Maldives and its tourist spots.
The row was triggered after Modi's visit to Lakshwadeep on January 2 where he shared several pictures, including an 'exhilarating experience' of him trying his hand at snorkelling.
However, a Maldivian lawmaker inferred the visit as India trying to promote Lakshwadeep as an alternative tourist destination to Maldives. Following this, two other ministers also joined in and shared derogatory posts on X along with PM Modi's photos from Lakshadweep.&nbsp;
The surge of online backlash from the Indians forced the Maldives foreign ministry to issue an official statement on Sunday saying that the government is aware of "derogatory remarks" on social media platforms against foreign leaders and that the personal views do not represent its position. &nbsp;&nbsp;
"The government of Maldives is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals. These opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the government of Maldives," the Maldivian foreign ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

Citing a top government source, Adhadhu reported that three deputy ministers were suspended for making disparaging statements against PM Modi, following his recent visit to Lakshadweep.
Further, a section of officials in the Maldivian government were seen exchanging heated messages on X with Indian citizens and troll accounts as well, the local media outlet reported.
A massive uproar broke after a Maldivian deputy minister and some other government officials shared derogatory posts about PM Modi's recent visit to Lakshadweep.
PM Modi visited the Union Territory of Lakshadweep on January 2 and shared several pictures, including an 'exhilarating experience' of him trying his hand at snorkelling.
