The Maldives government has reportedly suspended three of its ministers over derogatory remarks made against India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The ministers include Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid.

The Maldives government had issued a strong statement warning of action against those who make derogatory remarks against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals.

It said the freedom of expression should be exercised in a democratic and responsible manner, and in ways that do not spread hatred, negativity, and hinder close relationships between the Maldives and its international partners.

Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed on January 7 condemned the derogatory remark made by a minister against India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mariyam Shiuna, Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment in the Maldives, had called Modi a clown and a puppet of Israel.

Reacting to it, Nasheed said the language used by the government official towards the leader of a key ally is appalling. He added that the Maldives government must distance itself from these comments and give clear assurance to India they do not reflect government policy.
