Maldives issues warning after minister's derogatory remarks against Modi

The government of Maldives has issued an official statement following a minister's derogatory remarks against India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The government of Maldives is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals. These opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the government of Maldives," the statement read.

It added the freedom of expression should be exercised in a democratic and responsible manner, and in ways that do not spread hatred, negativity, and hinder close relationships between the Maldives and its international partners.

"Moreover, the relevant authorities of the Government will not hesitate to take action against those who make such derogatory remarks," the Maldives government added.

Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed on January 7 condemned the derogatory remark made by a minister against India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mariyam Shiuna, Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment in the Maldives, had called Modi a clown and a puppet of Israel.

Reacting to it, Nasheed said the language used by the government official towards the leader of a key ally is appalling. He added that the Maldives government must distance itself from these comments and give clear assurance to India they do not reflect government policy.

Several Indian celebrities, including actor Akshay Kumar have reacted to the controversy, calling out the statements of the Maldives' officials.
