Can Maldives' 'pro-China' President Mohamed Muizzu be overthrown?

Barely two months have passed since his ascension and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu is already fighting to remain at the helm.

On Monday, Maldivian opposition parties, MDP and Democrats, decided to file an impeachment motion against the country's leader who is perceived to be pro-China.

According to the constitution of Maldives, the removal of the president requires a resolution submitted by one-third of the parliament members, stating the reasons for removal.

The resolution must then receive the support of two-thirds of the total membership of the house. The president can be impeached with 54 votes.

One of the parliamentarians from the MDP told SunOnline outlet that they, in partnership with the other opposition party Democrats, have gathered enough signatures to set off an impeachment motion.

The MDP, which is pro-India, and Democrats together have 56 MPs between them. 43 MPs from MDP, and 13 from Democrats, meeting the constitutional requirement to overthrow Muizzu. Whereas the ruling coalition of PPM and PNC has only 19 parliamentarians.
