Southee represented his country in 107 Test matches, 161 ODIs, and 126 T20 Internationals, taking 776 wickets.&nbsp;
Southee was a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad (2021, 2022, 2023) in the IPL during his playing career.&nbsp;
"KKR has always felt like home to me, and it&rsquo;s an honour to return in this new role. The franchise has an incredible culture, passionate fans, and a great group of players. Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane said underwhelming batting performances by key players like Rinku Singh and Andre Russell, was the main reason for the defending champions' disappointing eighth-place finish this IPL season.
Rahane said while the bowling unit largely met expectations, the failure of three-four main batters derailed their campaign. KKR's season ended with a crushing 110-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad here on Monday.
"It's just that for us as a team, three-four guys were out of form. Where we faltered was at the batting end. As a batting unit, collectively, we couldn't do well," Rahane said during the post-match media interaction.
"Unfortunately, two-three players were going through that phase for us. And that was the reason we couldn't do well...But again, they are pretty much experienced enough to handle this situation.
"I'm sure they will come back stronger next year...Rinku (Singh), Raman (Ramandeep Singh), all the players, they will learn from the mistakes and come back stronger." Venkatesh Iyer (average 20.28), Andre Russell (18.55), Rinku (29.42), and Ramandeep (9.40), who played key roles in KKR's 2024 title triumph, failed to replicate their form this season, hurting the team's prospects.
On Sunday, Sunrisers Hyderabad piled a massive 278/3 -- the third-highest total in IPL history -- on the back of Heinrich Klaasen's 37-ball century, before bowling out KKR for 168.
However, earlier setbacks such as the loss to Punjab Kings, while chasing just 112, and a narrow four-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants while chasing 239, proved more damaging for KKR's campaign.
They also had two rain-marred games and ultimately ended up with five wins from 14 matches.
"See, this season, I think for us, (it has been) kind of an up and down. We had our moments. We had our chances and I said that earlier also during those matches, as a unit, we didn't play well, really well," Rahane said.
"But again, this format, that's how it goes, you know...the Punjab Kings game, LSG game and also the CSK game, I thought those two-three games could have been slightly different.
"It's not easy when you win a championship and, you know, come into the next season, defending the championship, it's not that easy. As a team, we tried our best. What I can say is, we'll come back really stronger next year." Rahane said the pressure of expectations may have affected the batters' performance.
"When you have a couple of good seasons, as an individual, you put a lot of expectation on yourself. You put pressure on yourself. And I feel that was the case for most of the batters, to prove, you know, that how good I am. And it is completely natural.
"I'm sure our players, will learn from the mistakes. It's a lot to learn from this season, as a team. Not for any particular individual, but for everyone. So many learnings from this season."
Iyer gets Rahane's support
One of the biggest talking points was KKR's decision to re-sign Venkatesh Iyer using the Right To Match card after releasing him, at a hefty price of Rs 23.75 crore, making him their third-most expensive player.
But Rahane dismissed any suggestions that the price tag may have impacted the player's performance.
"Someone's not going to work doubly harder if he's getting Rs 20 plus crore, or someone's not going to work less harder when he's getting one, two, three crore, whatever it is.
"...your attitude doesn't change on the field. You know, that's what matters. As a player, you only focus on the controllable things. And I felt Venkatesh Iyer was actually focusing on the controllable things," he reasoned.
"I thought his attitude was fantastic. One off season, that can happen to any player. So it's not about the price tag. I don't think he was thinking about his price tag at all. But just one of those seasons that we had to go through."
Praise for the bowlers
Rahane praised the bowling unit for its consistency across the season, highlighting the performances of Harshit Rana, Chakravarthy, Vaibhav Arora, and veteran Sunil Narine.
"The wickets were really good for the batters. But I thought, bowling throughout the season, as a bowling unit, we did really well...all the bowlers who have played, their thinking was really clear," he said.

The man who led them to glory just a season ago could now stand in the way of Kolkata Knight Riders' playoff qualification when the side hosts the Shreyas Iyer-led revamped Punjab Kings in a high-stakes IPL clash here at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.
Twelve months ago, Iyer had led KKR to their first IPL title in a decade. On Saturday, he returns in opposition colours, at the helm of a rejuvenated Punjab side chasing a playoff spot.
Let go by KKR in one of the most surprising off-season moves, Iyer has found both comfort and purpose in Punjab Kings.
Reuniting with his old Delhi Capitals mentor Ricky Ponting, the duo has steadied PBKS into the top five of the table with five wins from eight games.
The partnership has given Iyer the space to lead confidently and he has tallied 263 runs with three half-centuries so far. However, he comes into the weekend game, carrying three single digit scores.
Saturday offers him the perfect chance to make a statement -- much like KL Rahul did the other against his former franchise Lucknow Super Giants with a composed 57 not out.
Iyer too could have a Rahul-like moment under the Eden lights.
KKR, on the other hand, are in desperate need of momentum.
With five defeats in eight matches, another stumble could tighten their already narrow path to the playoffs.
Their top-order remains unsettled, the middle-order erratic, and the spin attack ineffective on a surface they once called their fortress.
KKR's middle-order trio of Russell, Rinku and Ramandeep has failed to deliver the finishing punch this season, prompting calls for a shake-up.
The team may be forced to bring in Caribbean all-rounder Rovman Powell, whose power-hitting and handy pace can add much-needed spark and balance.
Angkrish Raghuvanshi, one of the few bright spots in KKR's batting, might once again look to negotiate the tricky phase when the likes of Arshdeep Singh (Punjab's leading wicket-taker with 11 scalps) and Yuzvendra Chahal operate.
Skipper Ajinkya Rahane too will be under the scanner, having anchored the innings well at times but struggled to shift gears and finish games.
He will be wary of Yuzvendra Chahal, who dismantled KKR in their demoralising 95 all-out collapse only last week by claiming the wickets of Rahane, Raghuvanshi, Rinku Singh, and Ramandeep Singh in a devastating spell.
With Marco Jansen providing the early menace and new find Nehal Wadhera managing tidy finishes, PBKS certainly look a more confident and well-rounded outfit.
For KKR's bowling unit, Harshit Rana's duel with PBKS opener Priyansh Arya could set the tone. Arya smashed a century against Chennai Super Kings earlier this season.
Despite their troubles, KKR are, however, still alive in the playoffs race.
Winning five of their remaining six games could be sufficient, but anything less would leave them dependent on other results.
For this to happen, KKR must fix their home record, which is just one win from four matches here.
The much-publicised friction with Eden curator Sujan Mukherjee over pitch preparations has drawn unwanted attention and debates over spin-friendly surfaces, fairness, and even calls from commentators to consider shifting base.
Despite it being slow and grippy, which is exactly what KKR wanted, Sunil Narine has taken just two wickets at the Eden. Varun Chakravarthy (4) has been marginally better, while Moeen Ali has failed to strike in two matches.

Chasing a daunting target of 239 set by LSG, KKR found themselves well-positioned at 149 for two after 12 overs. However, the momentum faltered, and they ultimately finished on 234/7 in their allotted 20 overs.
KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane led from the front, scoring a commendable 61 off 35 deliveries, laced with eight fours and two sixes. Venkatesh Iyer provided strong support with a solid 45, while Rinku Singh&rsquo;s explosive 15-ball 38 brought KKR tantalizingly close to victory, yet ultimately fell short.
Earlier in the day, LSG put on a batting masterclass after opting to bat first. On a sweltering afternoon with a real feel of 40&deg;C, LSG's opening pair of Aiden Markram (47 off 28; 4x4, 2x6) and Marsh (81 off 48; 6x4, 5x6) gave them a blazing start, adding 99 runs off just 62 balls after being put in to bat.
Pooran then lit up the evening with his 36-ball unbeaten 87, studded with seven fours and eight sixes, to power them to their second highest IPL total.
The lefthander cleverly targeted the short leg-side boundary from the dressing room end, and smashed Harshit Rana for two massive sixes over the leg-side to start the 17th over -- regaining the Orange Cap from Marsh in the process.
Such was the domination that LSG reached 95 without loss at the halfway stage and then added 143 in the last 10 overs with Pooran leading the carnage.
It was a clinical batting performance from LSG's top-three. Markram's early impetus, Marsh's consistency, and Pooran&rsquo;s finishing fireworks left KKR completely outclassed on their preferred dry and sticky wicket.
Markram was the early aggressor, plundering Spencer Johnson for 18 runs in his second over. He lofted two fours and a six off successive deliveries.
KKR&rsquo;s most economical bowler, Vaibhav Arora, began impressively with a tight off-stump line, conceding just eight runs in his first two overs but found little support from the other end.
KKR turned to Varun Chakravarthy in the fifth over to stem the flow of run. He initially applied the brakes, conceding just 16 runs from his first three overs. But with both openers well set, the breakthrough never came.
Marsh was particularly fluent, working the gaps with ease, while Markram powered his way to 47 before Harshit Rana finally broke the stand in the 11th over with an off-cutter that rattled the stumps.
But if KKR hoped for respite, Pooran had other ideas. The left-hander launched a brutal assault, racing to his third IPL fifty in just 21 balls as he toyed with the KKR bowlers.
Marsh and Pooran added 71 runs off 30 balls for the second wicket, before the Australian fell to Rana after completing his fifty in 36 balls.
But Pooran ensured the momentum never dipped, smashing Varun for a six and four in the 14th over -- the spinner&rsquo;s most expensive of the evening &mdash; which went for 16 runs. In the middle overs, LSG plundered 75 runs, setting themselves up for a huge total.
KKR&rsquo;s bowlers had little to offer on their traditionally slow and dry surface.
Varun finished with 0/31, while Johnson was taken apart for 46 runs in his three. Sunil Narine, too, was expensive, leaking 33 from his three overs without a wicket.
Arora remained KKR&rsquo;s standout bowler, conceding just 35 runs from his four overs, but lacked support from the rest.
Andre Russell, usually deployed as a partnership-breaker, came on only in the 16th over in a baffling decision but by then LSG had made 170.

Everything seemed to fall into place for KKR as they decisively outclassed SRH, who currently languish at the bottom of the table. Nicholas Pooran from Lucknow Super Giants leads the run charts with 189 runs, while Noor Ahmad of Chennai Super Kings dons the Purple Cap with nine wickets.
Venkatesh Iyer silenced his critics with a game-defining 60 off 29 deliveries, steering KKR to a formidable 200/6- the highest total for them this season. Angkrish Raghuvanshi set the stage with a polished 50 off 32 balls in a crucial 81-run partnership with captain Ajinkya Rahane, who contributed a solid 38 off 27.
Later, Iyer, along with Rinku Singh's explosive 32 not out from 17 balls, launched a late assault, adding a brisk 91 from just 41 balls.
KKR's bowling was equally dominant, starting with seamer Vaibhav Arora, who dismantled SRH's top order by dismissing the dangerous Travis Head (4) and Ishan Kishan (2) in successive overs. Arora finished with stellar figures of 4-1-29-3.
Harshit Rana removed Abhishek Sharma (2), leaving SRH struggling at 9/3 within 2.1 overs. Contributions from Andre Russell and Sunil Narine further reduced them to 66/5.
Varun Chakravarthy's spin mastery cleaned up the tail, capturing two wickets in consecutive balls to end with figures of 4-0-22-3, as SRH collapsed to a total of 120 in just 16.4 overs.
With this victory, the defending champions KKR bounced back from their early setbacks, having lost two of their initial three matches. Their next encounter will be against Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday.

The Knight Riders were beaten by seven wickets by Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the tournament-opener while the Royals were given a 44-run drubbing by Sunrisers Hyderabad. The common theme in those defeats was how the seemingly powerful batting and bowling units of KKR and RR failed to fire.
While the Rajasthan outfit might offer the excuse of playing on a Hyderabad shirtfront for the malfunction of their bowling unit, the Kolkata side do not have any such cover.
Apart from Sunil Narine, none of the KKR bowlers were able to contain free-flowing RCB batters, and in that the demystification of mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy might just worry them a bit.
Even on an Eden Gardens pitch that had some grip, Chakravarthy was given a towelling by Phil Salt and Virat Kohli.
The KKR camp now hopes that the spinner will find his stride on a Guwahati pitch that generally has some bite.
They will also keep an eye on the fitness of Anrich Nortje, who is recovering from a back strain. If the South African gets a green signal from the physios, then he will walk in for Spencer Johnson.
Similarly, KKR's middle-order batting crumbled spectacularly after skipper Ajinkya Rahane and Narine gave them a blistering start, eventually settling for a sub-par score.
Their batting pivots such as Venkatesh Iyer and Andre Russell got out, playing pre-determined cross-batted shots, and KKR will hope that they will show more game awareness in Guwahati.
The Knight Riders will also hope that Rinku Singh regains his hitting prowess down the order. It is crucial in converting a good total into something more intimidating in nature.
His recent T20 form is not that encouraging and in his last five international outings, Rinku has logged scores of 11, 9, 8, 30, 9 along with a 12 in the IPL opener.
Rinku and his top-order colleagues in KKR will hope that the Rajasthan bowlers would once again struggle to find their groove here.
The likes of Jofra Archer, who bowled the most expensive spell in the history of IPL against SRH, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Maheesh Theekshana were rudderless against the onslaught of Travis Head and Ishan Kishan. Archer had leaked 76 runs from his overs at the Uppal.
But they have an opportunity in Guwahati to regain their form.
It will also be a blot on stand-in skipper Riyan Parag who, at times, looked perplexed on the field about the decisions to be made.
The Rahul Dravid-coached side will eye sharper and more intuitive leadership from Parag against KKR.

Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Snehasish Ganguly, after holding two rounds of discussions with the city police on Tuesday, confirmed that authorities "have not given the go-ahead" for the match. "They have categorically said they won't be able to provide adequate security.
If there's no police protection, accommodating a 65,000-strong crowd becomes impossible," Snehasish said.
"We have informed the BCCI, and there is still time to take a final call. Even last year, a scheduled IPL match on Ram Navami had to be rescheduled."
The clash between KKR and LSG, owned by RPSG Group chairman Sanjiv Goenka, was expected to draw a packed house, with both teams boasting strong local support.
Last season, the IPL fixture between KKR and Rajasthan Royals was also rescheduled due to security concerns on Ram Navami.
Glittering opening ceremony
The 2025 IPL season will begin at Eden Gardens on March 22, with defending champions KKR taking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
A glittering 35-minute opening ceremony will precede the match, with likely performances by noted singer Shreya Ghoshal and actress Disha Patani.
The event is also likely to be attended by ICC chairman Jay Shah and other dignitaries.
"It's a marquee match with full demand for tickets. Eden Gardens is set to host an opening ceremony after a long time," Snehasish said, refusing to divulge details about the opening ceremony.

However the primary composition of the track used for the final is red soil where the ball is expected to come onto the bat a touch better compared to Friday.
Gambhir, whose obsession for having long hard look at the strips is legendary since his days as Delhi Ranji Trophy captain spent a considerable amount of time staring at the strip allocated for the grand finale.
He had head coach Chandrakant Pandit and bowling coach Bharat Arun for company.
The rain was a frustrating start-stop affair as KKR team left when the groundsmen were forced to relay the covers after pulling it off once.
As for the weather, there is no official forecast of rain on Sunday but it is expected to remain cloudy with low humidity.
But, a minor rain threat looms given that Cyclone Remal has engaged itself in the north of the Bay of Bengal, which could have a tiny effect in the capital city of the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

Following their massive 98-run win over Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday, the Shreyas Iyer-led side left on Monday evening for Kolkata at 5:45pm. The team was scheduled to arrive at 7.25pm.
But the charter flight had to be diverted to Guwahati first and then to Varanasi after adverse weather conditions made it impossible to land the plane in Kolkata.
"Team has landed back in Kolkata, and checked into Team Hotel," said an update from KKR media team at 5.18pm on Tuesday.
At Varanasi, some of the players, including Manish Pandey and Sherfane Rutherford, and assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate paid a visit to Shri Kashi Vishwanath temple and the holy Ganges ghat during sunrise.
"On our adventitious trip to Varanasi, some of our cricketers and support staff took the opportunity to pay a visit to Shri Kashi Vishwanath temple and holy Ganga ghat during sunrise," it added.
Earlier, the KKR media team provided an update at 8.46pm on Monday, saying, "Due to inclement weather over Kolkata, the KKR charter flight has been diverted to Guwahati. We've just landed here." Then another update at 9.53pm said, "We've got clearance to fly back to Kolkata now, from Guwahati. Estimated arrival: 11pm." However, the ordeal was not over for the players and support staff as multiple attempts to land the flight failed, forcing the officials to divert the flight mid-air to Varanasi.
"Flight took off from Guwahati to Kolkata, was scheduled to land at 11 PM. Couldn't land once again due to bad weather, despite several attempts. Diverted mid-air to Varanasi now. Just landed here," said an update at 1:15 am.
The KKR team then spent the night at Varanasi and was to travel to Kolkata this afternoon.
"The team would be checking into Varanasi hotel for overnight stay. Return flight to Kolkata TBD on Tuesday (7 May) afternoon," the KKR media team said in the final update at 3:00 am.
KKR's next game is against Mumbai Indians at Edens Garden on Saturday.
The two-time former champions will play Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on May 13 and Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on May 19 for their final two league matches.
