Ahead of Eid ul-Adha celebrations, street criminals in Pakistan's largest metropolis, Karachi, are increasingly targeting people carrying sacrificial animals which are being sold for thousands and lakhs of rupees.&nbsp; In the first five months of 2023, street crimes in the city rose sharply, with at least 46 people killed while resisting robberies in over 3,000 reported incidents, according to the Sindh Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).&nbsp; Alarmingly, over 21,000 mobile phones have been snatched, and over 20,000 motorcycles and cars were reported snatched or stolen.&nbsp; Street criminals in the city have graduated from looting people to stealing sacrificial animals and carrying out daring hold-ups in restaurants and even graveyards, making life miserable for the over 17 lakh metro area population.&nbsp; In a new trend witnessed in recent days, criminals have taken to stealing and taking off with sacrificial animals with impunity, brought in large numbers by citizens ahead of Eid ul-Adha celebrations on Thursday.&nbsp; Being sold this year for thousands and lakhs of rupees, sacrificial animals have become such a lucrative target for criminals that a special security force has been deployed by the Sindh police at the main animal markets set up for the upcoming Eid.&nbsp; Last week, armed robbers daringly unloaded goats from a moving van as the driver watched helplessly with two motorcyclists pointing guns at him.&nbsp; The nadir came last Saturday when six criminals looted people in a graveyard in the Korangi area of the city while video-recording their exploits on their mobile phones.&nbsp; The six were identified and arrested from the Shershah area in the city, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malik Zafar Awan.&nbsp; &ldquo;We found stolen motorcycles, mobiles and other valuables from their safe house in Shershah when we conducted a raid to arrest them,&rdquo; he said, adding that the gang was also involved in street crimes and home invasions in different parts of the city.&nbsp; Karachi, reported to be the 12th largest city in the world and Pakistan&rsquo;s economic hub, has been plagued by street crimes for many years, with the impunity of street criminals growing due to the weak law enforcement in the city.&nbsp; According to sociologist Dr Aima Akbar, the recent increase in street crimes can be attributed to the ongoing political and economic turmoil in the country.&nbsp; &ldquo;Criminals are emboldened because of the turmoil, and for a long time now, it is common knowledge the Sindh police does not have enough manpower to man a city like Karachi which is expanding rapidly,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp; Admitting that police were short-staffed, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Muhammad Tariq Mughal said, "We have set up a special Shaheens force to deal with street criminals, but presently we have just 128,000 policemen of all ranks on duty, and this makes it difficult to petrol every area of the city.&rdquo; He conceded that many cases of street crimes also go unreported.&nbsp; Shedding light on the reasons for rampaging street crimes, Aima Akbar said, &ldquo;These are complex and multifaceted. Unemployment and poverty contribute to this. Many qualified youths are without jobs, and this leads to frustration and anger." The combination of poverty with the large population of poor and underprivileged people in Karachi often leads people to turn to crime as their means of survival.&nbsp; Weak law enforcement is also a significant factor contributing to street crime in the populous city with a metro area population of 17,236,000. Newly elected Mayor Murtaza Wahab said one of his main priorities was to work with law enforcement agencies and improve the security situation in Karachi.&nbsp; Asserting that the provincial government has already taken various steps to improve law and order, including establishing special police units to tackle street crime, he said, "But we also need to address the other causes for the youth turning to street crimes like creating more job opportunities."&nbsp; &nbsp;

An IndiGo Airlines flight was diverted to Karachi in Pakistan due to an onboard emergency on 13 March 2023.
The Delhi-to-Doha flight landed in Karachi due to a medical emergency. "Unfortunately, on arrival, the passenger was declared dead by the airport medical team," IndiGo reportedly said.
"We are deeply saddened by the news and our prayers and wishes are with his family and loved ones," IndiGo said in a statement.
The airline said that it was making arrangements for transferring the other passengers of the flight, in coordination with the relevant authorities.

5 TTP terrorists killed in attack on Karachi police chief's office 

The nearly four-hour-long operation to seize back control of the five-storey building came to a dramatic end around 10.50 pm with four other people including a civilian killed in the heavy exchange of firing.

Five heavily-armed militants of the Tehreek-e-Taliban (Pakistan) have been killed after security forces managed to secure back control of the head office building of the Karachi Police Chief which came under a daring attack by the militants in the country's most populous city.
The nearly four-hour-long operation to seize back control of the five-storey building came to a dramatic end around 10.50 pm with four other people including two police constables, a rangers personnel and a civilian also killed in the heavy exchange of firing that took place between the TTP militants and security forces.
A senior security source said five terrorists were killed during the operation.
He said three were killed in the long gun battle while two blew themselves up which also caused some damage to one floor of the building.
Sindh government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab said on Twitter he could confirm that the Karachi Police Office (KPO) building has been cleared. "Three terrorists have been neutralised," he said.
He added four other people comprising the two policemen, rangers personnel and a civilian had been killed while 17 others were admitted to hospital with injuries.

There were conflicting reports on the number of terrorists who attacked and entered the building but police sources put their number down to eight.
"A clear picture will be known tomorrow as the combing and clean up operation is being carried out meticulously in the building after taking control," a senior police official said.
"But the identification process is still going on it will be a while before we can say exactly how many terrorists attacked the building," he said.
Senior Police Official, DIG South Irfan Baloch said they also found two cars with their doors open one at the back entrance of the building and one at the front in which the terrorists came around 7.10 pm on Friday," he said.
Baloch said the bomb disposal squad had combed both cars for explosive devices and also the suicide vests of the terrorists.
"They came prepared for a stand off and had sophisticated weapons and explosives, They managed to get into the building wearing police uniforms".
The attack comes as a big concern and embarrassment for the provincial government as the Karachi Police Chief office and the Saddar police station are located on the main Shahrah-e-Faisal road which serves as Karachi's main thoroughfare with a number of strategic installations, including the Pakistan Airforce's Faisal Base &mdash; and five star hotels in close proximity.
Overseas cricket players who are currently competing in the Pakistan Super League are staying in these hotels with Karachi to host matches on Saturday and Sunday.
But the Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah said the PSL matches would not be affected by the incident.
A senior police official said as soon as the terror attack took place, security had been increased at the team hotels and also at the National Stadium where matches are taking place.
The police closed down the Shahrah-e-Faisal road which links downtown Karachi to the airport during the operation to clear the building but the road was reopened at midnight.
Since the ceasefire agreement between the TTP and government broke down last year in November, terrorists have stepped up attacks on security forces and installations and even on mosques and markets in different parts of the country but Karachi has for some time now not witnessed any major incident.
The last major incident had come in June 2020 when four militants of the banned insurgent group Baloch Liberation Army had attacked the Karachi Stock Exchange, killing three people but were killed themselves as they unsuccessfully tried to enter the stock exchange premises.
The outlawed TTP which has claimed Friday's attack has in the past carried out daring terror attacks on security installations in Karachi most notably when they attacked the PNS Mehran base in 2011.
The attack and clearance operation lasted for 17 hours and resulted in the deaths of 10 security personnel. Two US-manufactured surveillance planes were also destroyed in the attack.
In 2014, the TTP also struck at the Jinnah International Airport old terminal in which 24 lives were lost and property damaged.&nbsp;

Minister Khurram Dastgir said in the morning that power would be fully restored within 12 hours. Speaking to Geo News, he said, "In winter, as the demand for electricity reduces nationwide and as an economic measure, we temporarily close down our power generation systems at night. Spicejet Flight Emergency Landing: A SpiceJet flight from Delhi to Dubai was diverted to Karachi on Monday after the fuel indicator of the aircraft started malfunctioning, officials of the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation said.
The Boeing 737 Max aircraft started showing unusual fuel quantity reduction from its left tank when it was mid-air, according to the DGCA.&nbsp;

This is the sixth such incident on SpiceJet aircraft in the last 17 days.
DGCA is investigating all the six incidents.
The airline in its statement said that no emergency was declared due to malfunction and the aircraft made a normal landing safely at Karachi.&nbsp;
All passengers are reported to have disembarked safely.&nbsp;
The airline said passengers have been served refreshments and replacement aircraft is being sent to Karachi that will take the passengers to Dubai.
According to SpiceJet, no previous malfunction was reported with the Boeing 737 aircraft that was being used for the flight.&nbsp;

Pakistani investigators probing the suicide attack by a woman at the Karachi University that killed three Chinese teachers have not ruled out the presence of more female suicide bombers at sleeper cells of the outlawed Baluchistan Liberation Army, even as police in Lahore have arrested a suspect from Punjab University in connection with the bombing.

Following the incident, the banned BLA took to social media to claim responsibility and announce that the bomber was a woman named Shaari Baloch who was highly educated mother of two young children, belonging to a well-established family and working as a school teacher in her native Turbat, Balochistan.
The Anti-Terrorism Department of the Sindh Police also identified the bomber who was born in Turbat in 1991 but settled in Kech district of the restive Baluchistan province.
“Initial investigations confirmed she was part of the banned Majeed brigade, a part of the BLA which has brainwashed these suicide bombers,” an official of the Anti-Terrorism Department said.
“We are looking into possiblities that there might be more female suicide bombers brainwashed to become part of the Majeed Brigade and waiting in sleeper cells," he said.
He confirmed that initial investigations had shown that Shari Baloch did not carry out the attack independently and was guided and helped by her handlers/facilitators, including a woman who met her at the entrance of the university and apparently briefed her before she went to the entrance of the Confucius Institute where she detonated herself as soon as the coaster van carrying the Chinese academics came.
“We suspect this operation was carried out with inside information,” the official said.
On Wednesday, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab Police have arrested a suspect from Lahore's Punjab University in connection with the suicide bombing at the Karachi University.
The intelligence agencies tracked down a suspect with whom Shari Baloch remained in contact by cellphone in Lahore and arrested him during a raid at a hostel of the Punjab University, a source in CTD told PTI on Thursday.
The suspect has been identified as Bebagr Imdad, a student of the seventh semester of English Literature in Numl, Islamabad. He also belongs to the area where Shaari Baloch lived.
"The agencies are picking up all those who remained in contact with Shaari before she blew herself up and Bebagr was one of them," he said.
A Punjab University spokesperson Khurram Shahzad told PTI that Bebagr had come to Lahore two days ago from Islamabad.
"On Tuesday, he visited his cousin at hostel 7 who is a history department student. On Wednesday, a security agency official approached the varsity administration and told it that it needed to take Bebagr into custody for his alleged link with the Karachi University bombing. The Punjab University obliged the request and now he is being interrogated," Shehzad said.
Some 300 students from Balochistan are currently studying at the Punjab University.
The security agencies are now searching for the husband of Shari Baloch, Dr Haibatan, who was apparently doing a public health course at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and was staying at a nearby hotel. However, his wife lived in Gulistan-i-Jauhar with her two children.
Counter-Terrorism Department official Raja Umar Khatab said that Shari Baloch and her husband had left their places a week before the attack and the husband’s whereabouts were not known. Raids were being carried out to find the husband and other facilitators, he said.
The CTD official also made it clear that Shari Baloch was not a student at the KU and in fact had done her BE and ME from the University of Balochistan and had also worked as a government teacher.
The officer said that the outlawed BLA had claimed responsibility for the attack and shared details about the attacker on their social media platforms. “We also suspect the involvement of a hostile foreign agency in this attack,” he said.
Meanwhile, the members of Baloch Student Council at Punjab University held a demonstration outside the varsity and demanded release of Bebagr. They said the “abduction of Bebagr" was part of ongoing disappearances and harassment of the Baloch students in the country. They said they would continue their protest till the release of Bebagr from the agencies' custody.
The suicide bombing at the Karachi University seems to be the harbinger of a 'new and unexpected dimension' in the dynamics of terrorism in Pakistan, particularly the Baloch insurgency.
Meanwhile, Additional Police Surgeon at the Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Hospital Dr Summaiya Syed said that the four people who were injured in the bomb blast, including a fourth Chinese teacher, Wang Yuqing, are out of danger.
Those killed in the suicide bombing included three Chinese faculty members and their Pakistani driver, Khalid Nawaz.
In the FIR lodged about the incident by SHO Basharat Hussain, the BLA Majeed Brigade militant commanders Bashir Zaib and Rehman Gul and others were involved in the attack.
The FIR says the BLA wanted to undermine relations between Pakistan and China and get publicity for their outlawed outfit through terrorist acts, the FIR added.
The security forces on Thursday raided the house of the father of the bomber in a society located in Karachi’s Scheme 33. Laptops and other evidence, including documents, were seized during the raid.
The Security agencies in Balochistan on Wednesday also searched the apartment of the suicide bomber in Gulistan-e-Johar and sealed it afterwards. The apartment was rented and the bomber had been living there for the last three years.
The Karachi University reopened for the first time on Thursday after the suicide attack.
The university's spokesperson said that administrative affairs and the teaching process in the university will continue as usual. However, the Confucius Institute will remain closed until clearance from the Chinese embassy.
Newly-appointed Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari visited the Chinese embassy in Islamabad shortly after he took charge on Wednesday.
Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb told a press conference that the government was reviewing the National Action Plan against terrorism and would bring the perpetrators of the Karachi bombing to justice.
China has demanded stern action against the militant organisations behind the attack. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin during a media briefing asked Pakistan to scale-up security for its nationals working in the country and demanded a thorough investigation and punishment to the perpetrators behind the suicide attack.
