Hours after a blast at the Karachi university rocked Pakistan, the Balochistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the attack. The BLA's Majeed Brigade claimed that a woman named Shari Baloch had carried out the suicide bombing.

The BLA claimed that Shari Baloch was its first woman suicide attacker, and the Karachi incident marked a "new chapter in the history of the Baloch resistance", according to reports. CCTV footage of the incident showed a person dressed in a burqa triggering explosives near the van ferrying the apparent targets.

The attack killed 3 Chinese nationals, and 1 Pakistani citizen. The Chinese nationals worked at the Confucius Institute at the Karachi university. The Confucius Institute teaches Chinese language to locals.

Pakistan's Balochistan region has been witnessing a rise in insurgency, with armed groups highlighting demands ranging from autonomy to complete independence. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, or CPEC, passing through the region has also angered the locals, who are seeking a greater share of the wealth generated from resources in the region.
