In a dramatic turn of events in the Middle East, Syria&rsquo;s capital, Damascus, has fallen to rebel forces, forcing President Bashar al-Assad to flee after ruling the country for 24 years. This major shift in power has prompted immediate military intervention from the United States, which carried out a series of airstrikes targeting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) in Syria.&nbsp; &nbsp;
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the strikes, executed the day following the insurgents' capture of Damascus. In an official statement, CENTCOM disclosed that over 75 targets were struck, including ISIS leaders, operatives, and training camps. The urgency of the strikes reflects the US strategy to prevent armed groups from exploiting the power vacuum following Assad's departure.
"On December 8, US Central Command (CENTCOM) forces conducted dozens of precision airstrikes targeting known ISIS camps and operatives in central Syria," the statement read. "The mission's aim is clear: disrupt, degrade, and defeat ISIS. We cannot afford for ISIS to regroup or enable the terrorist group to conduct operations outside Syria, particularly in the wake of Assad's ousting."
The action was underscored by assertions from CENTCOM Commander General Michael Erik Kurilla, who emphasized the critical risk of an ISIS resurgence. "There should be no doubt &ndash; ISIS will not be allowed to reconstitute and exploit the current situation in Syria," he stated. Moreover, he warned all factions in Syria against any form of collaboration with ISIS, stressing accountability.
In tandem with the military activities, political overtures came from the White House, where President Joe Biden defined Assad's fall as both a "moment of risk" and a "historic opportunity." In a televised address, Biden articulated the dual nature of this transition&mdash;highlighting the potential for Syria's populace to aspire for a more hopeful future, while cautioning about the inherent uncertainty that comes with a power vacuum.&nbsp;
Biden attributed Assad's downfall primarily to dwindling support from key allies such as Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah. "For years, Assad relied on Iran, Hezbollah, and Russia. But in recent weeks, their support faltered dramatically, revealing their weakened state since I took office," Biden noted. Despite this, he reiterated America's commitment to assisting Syrian stakeholders in forestalling further instability.
As the US administration manages this geopolitical shift, a significant change in US foreign policy approach looms with the upcoming presidency of Donald Trump. Known for his 'America First' ethos, Trump has expressed a starkly divergent stance. In response to Assad's toppling, Trump declared that the United States should steer clear of the Syrian conflict, labeling it as a "mess."
His non-interventionist viewpoint suggests a potential recalibration of US involvement in Middle Eastern affairs. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan mirrored this sentiment by maintaining that US priorities should focus on preventing an ISIS resurgence and averting a humanitarian crisis, rather than direct involvement in the conflict.

The police said that ISIS India head and his aide furthered the cause of the terror group in the country

ISIS India head and one of his associates were arrested in Assam's Dhubri district on Wednesday after they crossed over from Bangladesh, police said.
In a statement, Assam Police Chief Public Relations Officer Pranabjyoti Goswami said they were apprehended from Dharmasala area by the Special Task Force (STF) following a tip-off.
They were later brought to the STF office in Guwahati, he added.
"The identity of both of them was ascertained and it is found that accused Haris Farooqi alias Harish Ajmal Farukhi of Chakrata, Dehradun is the head of ISIS in India," Goswami said.
His associate Anurag Singh alias Rehan of Panipat got converted to Islam, while his wife is a Bangladeshi national, he added.
"Both of them are highly indoctrinated and motivated leaders/members of ISIS in India. They had furthered the cause of ISIS in India through conspiracies to carry out recruitment, terror funding and terror acts using IEDs at several places across India," the CPRO said.
He further said that several cases are pending against them at NIA, Delhi, ATS and Lucknow among other places.
"STF, Assam, will hand over the accused to NIA for taking up further legal actions against these fugitives," the police official said.
Goswami said information was received from sister agencies that two top-rung leaders of ISIS in India, who were camping in Bangladesh, would cross over to the country at the Dhubri sector to carry out sabotage activities.
Based on the input, a team was deputed to locate and apprehend them.
"A manhunt was launched in the international border area to nab the culprits. At around 4:15 am of March 20, the accused persons were detected at Dharmasala area of Dhubri after they had crossed the international border," it added.

Tightening its grip over the ISIS influence in India, the National Investigation Agency on December 18, raided 19 locations in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Delhi.
As per the reports, the investigation agency arrested eight operatives of the Ballari module of the banned Islamic State terror organization from four states.
The arrested includes the leader of the terror group Minaz alias Md. Sulaiman. Reportedly, raw materials for explosives like sulphur, potassium nitrate, charcoal, gunpowder, sugar and ethanol, and sharp-edged weapons, were also recovered along with cash, incrimination documents, smartphones and other digital devices.
Those arrested have been identified as Minaj and Syed Sameer from Ballari; Anas Iqbal Shaikh from Mumbai; Mohammad Muniruddin, Syid Samiullah alias Sami and Md Muzammil from Bengaluru; Shayan Rahman alias Hussain from Delhi; and Mohammad Shahbaz alias Zulfikar alias Guddu from Jamshedpur.

The detained was recruited by ISIS as a suicide bomber in Turkey, as per a statement by the Russian Federal Security Service.

Afghanistan's Taliban rulers are maintaining close ties with al-Qaida as they consolidate control over the country, and their main military threat is coming from the Islamic State extremist group and guerrilla-style attacks by former Afghan government security personnel, UN experts said in a new report.
The experts said in the report to the UN Security Council that with the onset of better weather, fighting may escalate as both Islamic State and resistance forces undertake operations against Taliban forces.
But neither IS nor al-Qaida “is believed to be capable of mounting international attacks before 2023 at the earliest, regardless of their intent or of whether the Taliban acts to restrain them,” the panel of experts said.
Nonetheless, it said the presence of IS, al-Qaida, and “many other terrorist groups and fighters on Afghan soil” is raising concerns in neighboring countries and the wider international community.
Since their takeover of Afghanistan last Aug 15 as US and NATO forces were in the final stages of their chaotic withdrawal from the country after 20 years, the Taliban “have favoured loyalty and seniority over competence, and their decision-making has been opaque and inconsistent,” the experts said.
In the report obtained Thursday, the panel monitoring sanctions against the Taliban said its leaders have appointed 41 men on the UN sanctions blacklist to the Cabinet and senior positions, and they have favoured the country's dominant Pashtun ethnic group, alienating minority communities including ethnic Tajiks and Uzbeks.
The Taliban's primary concern has been to consolidate control “while seeking international recognition, to re-engage with the international financial system and to receive aid in order to deal with the growing economic and humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan,” the experts said.
“Since taking power, however, there have been many factors creating internal tensions within the movement, leading to perceptions that the Taliban's governance has been chaotic, disjointed and prone to reversing policies and going back on promises.," they said.
As the Taliban struggle to transition from an insurgency to a governing body, they have been divided between pragmatists and hardliners who have gained the upper hand and want to turn the clock back to the group's harsh rule from 1996 until December 2001, when they were ousted from power by US forces following the 9/11 attacks on the United States.
To date, their efforts to win recognition and aid from Western nations have floundered, largely because they have not formed a more representative government, and have restricted the rights of girls to education beyond elementary school, and of women to work and travel without a male relative's oversight.
“The central dilemma is how a movement with an inflexible ideology can engage with a society that has evolved during the past 20 years,” the experts said. “Further stresses revolve around power, resources, and regional and ethnic divisions.” Despite these serious issues, the panel said the Taliban “appear confident in their ability to control the country and 'wait out' the international community to obtain eventual recognition of their government.” “They assess that, even if they make no significant concessions, the international community will ultimately recognise them as the government of Afghanistan, especially in the absence of a government in exile or significant internal resistance,” the experts said.
So far, not a single country has officially recognised the Taliban, and there is growing international anger at its treatment of girls and women and its failure to keep its promise of forming an inclusive government. There are also concerns about the Taliban's inability to keep its promise not to allow terrorist groups to operate in Afghanistan.

The emergence of the National Resistance Front and Afghanistan Freedom Front comprising former Afghan security personnel “has led the Taliban to adopt aggressive measures against populations suspected of supporting anti-Taliban operations,” the panel said.
In April, it said National Resistance Front forces stepped up operations in Badakhshan, Baghlan, Jowzjan, Kunduz, Panjshir, Takhar and Samangan provinces.
The Afghan Freedom Front, which only emerged recently, “has also claimed several attacks on Taliban bases in Badakhshan, Kandahar, Parwan and Samangan,” the experts said.
“Taliban forces may be hard pressed to counter several insurgencies simultaneously,” they said.

But neither IS nor al-Qaida &ldquo;is believed to be capable of mounting international attacks before 2023 at the earliest, regardless of their intent or of whether the Taliban acts to restrain them,&rdquo; the panel of experts said.
Nonetheless, it said the presence of IS, al-Qaida, and &ldquo;many other terrorist groups and fighters on Afghan soil&rdquo; is raising concerns in neighboring countries and the wider international community.
Since their takeover of Afghanistan last Aug 15 as US and NATO forces were in the final stages of their chaotic withdrawal from the country after 20 years, the Taliban &ldquo;have favoured loyalty and seniority over competence, and their decision-making has been opaque and inconsistent,&rdquo; the experts said.
In the report obtained Thursday, the panel monitoring sanctions against the Taliban said its leaders have appointed 41 men on the UN sanctions blacklist to the Cabinet and senior positions, and they have favoured the country's dominant Pashtun ethnic group, alienating minority communities including ethnic Tajiks and Uzbeks.
The Taliban's primary concern has been to consolidate control &ldquo;while seeking international recognition, to re-engage with the international financial system and to receive aid in order to deal with the growing economic and humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan,&rdquo; the experts said.
&ldquo;Since taking power, however, there have been many factors creating internal tensions within the movement, leading to perceptions that the Taliban's governance has been chaotic, disjointed and prone to reversing policies and going back on promises.," they said.
As the Taliban struggle to transition from an insurgency to a governing body, they have been divided between pragmatists and hardliners who have gained the upper hand and want to turn the clock back to the group's harsh rule from 1996 until December 2001, when they were ousted from power by US forces following the 9/11 attacks on the United States.
To date, their efforts to win recognition and aid from Western nations have floundered, largely because they have not formed a more representative government, and have restricted the rights of girls to education beyond elementary school, and of women to work and travel without a male relative's oversight.
&ldquo;The central dilemma is how a movement with an inflexible ideology can engage with a society that has evolved during the past 20 years,&rdquo; the experts said. &ldquo;Further stresses revolve around power, resources, and regional and ethnic divisions.&rdquo; Despite these serious issues, the panel said the Taliban &ldquo;appear confident in their ability to control the country and 'wait out' the international community to obtain eventual recognition of their government.&rdquo; &ldquo;They assess that, even if they make no significant concessions, the international community will ultimately recognise them as the government of Afghanistan, especially in the absence of a government in exile or significant internal resistance,&rdquo; the experts said.
So far, not a single country has officially recognised the Taliban, and there is growing international anger at its treatment of girls and women and its failure to keep its promise of forming an inclusive government. There are also concerns about the Taliban's inability to keep its promise not to allow terrorist groups to operate in Afghanistan.

A few days after a Shiite mosque was being attacked by suicide bombers in southern Afghan city of Kandahar, a security footage has emerged which shows the moment of the attack.

In the new CCTV video that is being released, the attackers can be seen holding weapons as they enter the mosque during Friday prayers. Another camera shows worshippers inside running away before an explosion engulfs the building.
Earlier, a similar blast at a Shiite mosque rocked the northern city of Kunduz in which scores of people died.
