Beyonce on Sunday finally won the Grammy for the year's best album for her culture-shaking "Cowboy Carter," as rapper Kendrick Lamar posted a clean sweep on a night that served as a love letter to fire-ravaged Los Angeles.
Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Doechii and Sabrina Carpenter emerged as big winners at the performance-heavy gala, while heavyweights Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish went home empty-handed.
Beyonce's win for "Cowboy Carter" now makes her the most nominated, most decorated artist at the awards show ever -- as well as the first Black woman to claim the top prize in this century.
The triumph was all the more relevant as the 43-year-old's ambitious, historically rooted album elevated and showcased the work of Black artists in country music, whose rich contributions the industry has repeatedly sidelined.
"I just feel very full and very honored," she said, her husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy cheering from the crowd of A-listers at Crypto.com Arena.
She dedicated the prize to Linda Martell, a pioneering Black country musician featured on the album.
"I hope we just keep pushing forward, opening doors," Beyonce said.
The win brought Beyonce's total Grammys on the night to three: she also won for her collaboration with Miley Cyrus, and snagged the best country album trophy.
"I really was not expecting this," she said as she accepted that prize, her voice audibly shaking. "Sometimes genre is a code word to keep us in our place as artists."
"I just want to encourage people to do what they're passionate about and to stay persistent," she added.
 - Lamar, Chappell Roan own the stage -
Hip-hop laureate Lamar cleaned up thanks to his smash diss track "Not Like Us," one of a series of songs from the Los Angeles-area native that skewer rap rival Drake.
He won in all five categories in which he was nominated, including Record and Song of the Year. He lost only to himself -- he was twice up for two of the rap genre prizes.
"Nothing more powerful than rap music," the 37-year-old Lamar said in accepting the top song trophy. "We are the culture."
"Not Like Us" shattered streaming records, catapulted to the top of the charts and quickly became a West Coast rap anthem, beloved for its pounding bass line, rhythmic strings and exaggerated enunciation.
Lamar dedicated his best record win to his hometown, which is still reeling from the fires that razed whole neighborhoods and left thousands of people displaced.
The coveted prize for Best New Artist went to Chappell Roan, capping a meteoric year for the Midwestern artist who went from struggling singer to music's It girl seemingly overnight.
But in a powerful acceptance speech, she recounted how it wasn't always easy -- she was dropped from her label during the pandemic and struggled to find work.
Roan demanded that labels provide artists with a "livable wage and health care."
"Record labels need to treat their artists as valuable employees," she said. "Labels, we got you, but do you got us?"
 - 'Anything is possible' -
Doechii emerged as another big winner, becoming just the third woman to ever win the prize for best rap album. The second-ever winner, Cardi B, presented her with the prize.
"Anything is possible," Doechii said as she accepted the trophy through tears, speaking directly to Black girls and women like herself.
"Don't allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you that tell you that you can't be here, that you're too dark or that you're not smart enough, or that you're too dramatic or you're too loud," she said.
"You are exactly who you need to be."
Sabrina Carpenter won for best pop vocal album, her second award of the night that followed a slapstick, Old Hollywood-inspired performance of her nominated hits "Espresso" and "Please Please Please."
Shakira scooped Best Latin Pop Album, before delivering a jaw-dropping performance of her classics and new work, gyrating around the room.
And Charli XCX won three prizes including best dance/electronic album for her summer-defining "Brat" before a banging performance at the end of the night.
 - 'Love you, LA' -
Sunday's gala was an homage to the city of Los Angeles.
Yet it was not a somber evening but rather one of warmth, celebrating first responders while urging donations. Host Trevor Noah said at least $7 million was raised from viewers for wildfire relief.
Top LA County firefighters presented Beyonce with her big award, while students who lost their schools sang with Stevie Wonder on "We Are The World" as part of the tribute to the late music powerhouse Quincy Jones.
The show opened with a supergroup including Sheryl Crow and John Legend performing Randy Newman's track "I Love LA," while Eilish sang her hit "Birds of a Feather" in an LA Dodgers baseball cap.

In a letter to Academy members obtained by AFP, organizers said the 67th annual music awards gala would take place at the Crypto.com Arena in downtown LA "in close coordination with local authorities to ensure public safety and responsible use of area resources."
"This year's show, however, will carry a renewed sense of purpose: raising additional funds to support wildfire relief efforts and honoring the bravery and dedication of first responders who risk their lives to protect ours," Academy head Harvey Mason Jr said in the letter, which was co-signed by Board of Trustees chair Tammy Hurt.
"The Grammys will not only honor the artistry and achievements of our music community but also serve as a platform to amplify the spirit of resilience that defines this great city of Los Angeles," Mason and Hurt said.
The marquee televised portion of the gala will still air on CBS.
Top nominees include Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar.

In a big surprise, Abundance in Millets, a song featuring PM Narendra Modi got a nod at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
It bagged a nomination in the Best Global Music Performance category. It is created by Falu &amp; Gaurav Shah.
Other nominees in the category include: Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer &amp; Shahzad Ismaily - Shadow Forces, Burna Boy - Alone, Davido - Feel, Silvana Estrada - Milagro Y Disastre, B&eacute;la Fleck, Edgar Meyer &amp; Zakir Hussain ft. Rakesh Chaurasia - Pashto. Ibrahim Maalouf ft. Cimafunk &amp; Tank and the Bangas - Todo Colores.
Abundance in Millets was created in celebration of the &lsquo;International Year of the Millets&rsquo;.
Falu's website mentions, &ldquo;The Indian government submitted the proposal, acknowledging India as one of the largest producers of the supergrain, which was supported by 72 countries and United Nation's General Assembly.&rdquo;

Taylor Swift hit the red carpet wearing a sparkly navy blue crop top and skirt by Roberto Cavalli.&nbsp;
Cardi B wore a Gaurav Gupta dress that just debuted at the couture shows in Paris last week.&nbsp;
Doja Cat looked gusty and spunky in a Versace latex gown accessorised with a glass Coperni bag.&nbsp;
Kacey Musgraves showed up in a Valentino catsuit and matching stilettos.
Lizzo turned heads with her bright coat, covered in roses.&nbsp;
Myles Frost opted for a black and gold jacket, covered with rhinestones.&nbsp;
Sam Smith and Kim Petras opted for red outfits and matching latex gloves and veil.&nbsp;
Harry Styles changed into three outfits but the highlight was the rainbow jumpsuit, with a deep V-neck.&nbsp;
Camila Cabello posed on the red carpet in a white bra and black skirt with a slit.&nbsp;

Anita was with the Oakland-based group 'The Pointer Sisters' from its formation in 1969 until she was forced to retire due to health reasons in 2015.

Anita Pointer, from the Grammy-winning Pointer Sisters, died at the age of 74 on December 31. Her publicist Rogher Neal announced the news via a statement. He said she passed away while she was with family members at her Beverley Hills home in California. The cause of death was not immediately revealed
&lsquo;While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Anita, we are comforted in knowing she is now with her daughter Jada and her sisters June &amp; Bonnie and at peace. She was the one that kept all of us close and together for so long,&rsquo; her sister Ruth, brothers Aaron and Fritz and granddaughter Roxie McKain Pointer said in the statement.
Anita was with the Oakland-based group from its formation in 1969 until she was forced to retire due to health reasons in 2015.
The Pointer Sisters self-titled debut album included the breakout hit, &lsquo;Yes We Can Can.&rsquo; The singers, best known for hit songs like &lsquo;I&rsquo;m So Excited,&rsquo; &lsquo;Slow Hand,&rsquo; &lsquo;Neutron Dance&rsquo; and &lsquo;Jump (For My Love),&rsquo; gained a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994.
The group won three Grammy Awards and had 13 US top 20 hit songs between 1973 and 1985, Neal said.
The Pointer Sisters also was the first African American group to perform on the Grand Ole Opry program and the first contemporary act to perform at the San Francisco Opera House, he added.

Grammys &nbsp;Awards 2023 nominations : The complete list of nominations for the 2023 Grammy Awards was announced on Tuesday and Beyonce dominates with nine nods. Her track &lsquo;Break My Soul&rsquo; earned record and song of the year nominations, while &lsquo;Renaissance&rsquo; earned an album of the year nod.
She has now tied with her husband, rapper Jay-Z as the most-nominated artist in Grammys history.
Jay-Z has earned five nominations this year.
Kendrick Lamar, who has received eight major nominations, is the second-most nominated musician in this year&rsquo;s list.
Adele and Brandi Carlile have seven nominations and Harry Styles has six nods for his album &lsquo;Harry's House&rsquo; and also a Song of the Year nomination for &lsquo;As It Was&rsquo;.

Last month, when the globally respected Oscar awards failed to mention the legendary Lata Mangeshkar and the thespian Dilip Kumar in its ‘In Memoriam’ section, it had upset many all over. This time round, it was none other than Grammy Awards (no less!) which failed to pay tributes to the eternal melody queen Lata Mangeshkar as well as the well-known musician Bhappi Lahiri, who had passed away this year. To everyone’s disappointment, neither of the two names got a mention in the ‘In Memoriam’ segment of the Grammy awards show, which was held at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada this year.
Seeing the names of the late Lata Mangeshkar and Bhappi Lahiri missing from the list of tributes, netizens all over got really upset and angry. Many even took to the social media and slammed this year’s Grammy awards. While one user commented that ‘Lataji was a bigger star than everyone on that Grammy stage tonight’, there was another who commented that ‘forgetting Lata Mangeshkar was a huge failure by the Grammy award organizers.
The ones whose names were mentioned in this year’s ‘In Memoriam’ section included the late Stephen Sondheim (Broadway composer), Tom Parker, Taylor Hawkins amongst others.

Within the past year, Marilyn Manson has been accused of sexual assault by several women and is facing a number of lawsuits  including from his former partner, Evan Rachel Wood. He is nominated for his work on Donda by Kanye West under Album of the Year.  Another repeat nominee is Chris Brown, who is nominated for his work on H.E.R.'s Back of My Mind, Donda, as well as under the Best Christian Music category. Brown has a history of violence against women, including pleading guilty to felony assault after punching and choking his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, in 2009. He was accused of hitting a woman as recently as June of this year, but the charges were later dropped.  Comedian Louis C.K. is also nominated for a 2022 Grammy for Sincerely Louis CK. He was previously accused of sexual misconduct by numerous women, later saying in a statement, “These stories are true.” In the special, he reportedly jokes about the accusations.  There are many more artists who have faced significant controversy over the past year who are also nominated — including Travis Scott, who is currently being sued following multiple deaths and injuries at his Astroworld festival. He is also nominated for his work on Donda.

We won’t look back at people’s history, we won’t look at their criminal record, we won’t look at anything other than the legality within our rules of, is this recording for this work eligible based on date and other criteria. If it is, they can submit for consideration.”
