Prime Minister Modi had called for an expansion of the UNSC during the G20 summit saying it needs to reflect the world's new realities.&nbsp;

The BJP on Monday attacked the Congress, alleging that former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru had "given away" the UN Security Council's permanent seat to China "on a platter".
On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a renewed push for expansion of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and reforms in all global institutions to reflect the world's "new realities", as the G20 Summit drew to a close with the US, Russia and France praising the meeting's outcomes under Indian presidency.
"Today, while India, under the leadership of PM Modi is shaping the world, and the world is backing the country's bid for a permanent UNSC seat, which Nehru gave away to China on a platter...The unpatriotic deeds of the Gandhi family haunt our history, to date," the BJP said in a post on X.
The UNSC has five permanent members -- the US, China, France, Britain and Russia.
Making a fresh pitch for expansion of the UNSC and reforms in global institutions, Modi had also said that in order to take the world towards a better future, it is necessary that the global systems are according to the present realities.
"Today, the United Nations Security Council is also an example of this. When the UN was established, the world was completely different from what it is today. At that time, there were 51 founding members in the UN. Today the number of countries included in the UN is around 200," Modi had said.
"Despite this, the number of permanent members in the UNSC remains the same. The world has since changed a lot in every aspect. Be it transport, communication, health and education, every sector has been transformed. These new realities should reflect in our new global structure," he had said.
A day after Prime Minister Modi's renewed push for expansion of the UNSC, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday echoed similar views and called for reform of the powerful UN body to reflect contemporary realities.
Brazil is the next chair of the G20 bloc. The president also said that his country wants the equality issue to be the "core issue" during its presidency.
On Sunday at a press briefing, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkiye would be "proud" if a country like India becomes a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
At the same time, Erdogan had said all non-P5 members should have an opportunity to become members of the Security Council by rotation.
In a joint statement on Friday, US President Biden had lauded India's G20 Presidency for further "demonstrating" how the G20 as a forum is delivering important outcomes.
Continuing to share the view that global governance must be more inclusive and representative, President Biden reaffirmed his support for a reformed UNSC with India as a permanent member, the joint statement said.
India has been at the forefront of the years-long efforts to reform the UNSC, saying it rightly deserved a place as a permanent member of the United Nations.&nbsp;

Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Choudhury on Sunday questioned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee&rsquo;s decision to attend the dinner hosted by President Droupadi Murmu on the occasion of the G20 meet in New Delhi, asking if that would not weaken her stance against the Narendra Modi government.
The state Congress president also wondered whether there was &ldquo;any other reason&rdquo; for the Trinamool Congress supremo to take part in the programme.
The TMC hit back at Choudhury, saying that Banerjee is one of the prime movers behind the non-BJP bloc INDIA and the Congress leader did not need to lecture her about certain protocols to be followed from the administrative point of view.
"When many non-BJP CMs refrained from attending the dinner, Didi (Mamata Banerjee) went to Delhi a day in advance. She attended the occasion with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the same room.
&ldquo;I wonder what prompted her to rush all the way to Delhi to be in the dinner party along with these leaders," Choudhury told reporters here.
Banerjee went to Delhi on Friday, while the dinner party was held the next day.
Choudhury asked, "Is there any other reason behind her attending the occasion?" Reacting to his statement, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen said everyone knows Mamata Banerjee is one of the architects behind INDIA and none can question her commitment.
"Choudhury will not decide when the chief minister of the state will go to attend a dinner on the occasion of G20 as part of the protocol," Sen said.
The BJP&rsquo;s West Bengal spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said the Congress and CPIM joined hands with the Banerjee-led party in Delhi against the saffron camp, betraying the people of the state who were &ldquo;victims of the TMC&rsquo;s terror&rdquo;.
"The Congress itself has joined hands with the corrupt TMC in Delhi. It is the BJP which has remained vocal against the corruption of TMC leaders. ED and CBI are raiding against them. The BJP is with the people of Bengal.
"So, people like Adhir Choudhury should explain who is actually cosying up to TMC and doing a disservice to the people of the state," Bhattacharya said.
Banerjee&rsquo;s flight was scheduled for Saturday, but it was rescheduled to Friday afternoon owing to regulation of flight movements in the national capital, officials said.

India will decide on implementing cryptocurrency regulations after extensive discussions with other countries, a senior official said on Sunday, virtually ruling out a ban on such assets.
Ahead of G20 leaders' summit, the IMF and the Financial Stability Board (FSB) had last week made a strong case for a coordinated global policy action to deal with risks posed by cryptocurrencies and said that there should not be any blanket ban.
The IMF-FSB recommendations laid out a "roadmap" and suggested "bare minimum" regulations that every country should have on cryptocurrencies.
If any country wants to have a more stricter regulation, it can frame a more restrictive regulation depending on the risk it sees from cryptos, the official said.
"Now G20 leaders have endorsed it (FSB recommendations) and now ministers and governments will discuss it and take it forward. We expect a lot of discussion to happen on how to implement it faster, swifter and in a comprehensive manner. We have a good framework to decide our own way forward. The foundation is ready, beyond that how much we want to go it is for us to decide in coming months and then take a call," the official said.
India has been pressing for a global regulation on cryptocurrencies to tackle tax evasion and round tripping of funds. India's central bank RBI has been asked for a complete ban on cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin and Ether, saying they are akin to gambling.
The official said it would be difficult for one country to ban cryptocurrencies and globally a consensus has to be reached that all countries follow the "bare minimum" regulation that the IMF-FSB paper has outlined.
"If you want to ban it (cryptocurrency), go ahead and ban it. But if the rest of the countries are not banning it, it will be extremely difficult for one country to ban it. Now that discussion, we have to take up and try to build a consensus on regulation. Then we gradually decide on our own system. The discussion will happen now in our system. It is not an easy one," the official said.
The fourth meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors is scheduled to take place in Marrakech, Morocco, on the sidelines of the 2023 annual meetings of World Bank and IMF from October 9-15.
The official said there are risks associated with cryptocurrencies as there are the same set of entities who act as depository and clearing systems, unlike that in the stock market.
"The purpose of regulation is that the risk is well managed. Any country which feels they have more risk can make their regulation more restrictive," the official said, adding if all countries agree on the same regulation there will be no arbitrage.
The IMF-FSB in its paper had said that its proposed regulation apply the principle of &ldquo;same activity, same risk, same regulation&rdquo;, establish a minimum baseline that jurisdictions should meet, and aim to address the set of issues common across majority of jurisdictions.
The New Delhi declaration issued at the end of the first day of G20 leaders' summit had said that the countries will continue to closely monitor the risks of fast-paced developments in the cryptoasset ecosystem.
&ldquo;We endorse the Financial Stability Board's (FSB's) high-level recommendations for the regulation, supervision and oversight of cryptoassets activities and markets and of global stablecoin arrangements,&rdquo; it said.
The leaders also called for timely implementation of these recommendations in a consistent manner globally to avoid regulatory arbitrage.
G20 leaders also welcomed the IMF-FSB Synthesis Paper, including a roadmap, that will support a coordinated and comprehensive policy and regulatory framework taking into account the full range of risks and risks specific to emerging market and developing economies (EMDEs) and the ongoing global implementation of FATF standards to address money laundering and terrorism financing risks.
&ldquo;Our Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors will discuss taking forward the roadmap at their meeting in October 2023,&rdquo; the declaration said.

India on Saturday circulated a new paragraph among the G20 countries to describe the Ukraine conflict in the joint leaders' declaration to be unveiled at the end of the two-day summit of the grouping, diplomatic sources said.
With consensus eluding on the paragraph relating to the Ukraine conflict, India on Friday circulated a draft summit declaration among the member countries without the paragraph on the geopolitical issue in an attempt to hammer out a positive outcome.
India's circulation of the new text on Ukraine came as the G20 leaders began deliberations on pressing global challenges on the first day of the annual summit of the bloc.
A lack of consensus on the text on Ukraine may result in the summit ending without a joint declaration, which will be a first for the grouping.
There was no consensus on the text to describe the Ukraine issue at the G20 Sherpa meeting that took place in the Nuh district of Haryana from September 3-6. Indian negotiators believe that there will be consensus on the new paragraph that was circulated on Saturday morning, the sources said.
The response of the Western powers as well as China and Russia to the new text was not known immediately.
Two sources had earlier said the G7 countries are not agreeable to any leaders' declaration without reference to the Ukraine conflict.
The G20 operates under the principle of consensus and there have been apprehensions that lack of a common view may result in the summit ending without a joint declaration.
Both Russia and China had agreed to the two paragraphs on the Ukraine conflict in the Bali declaration but backtracked this year, creating difficulties for India.
Almost all key meetings held under India's G20 presidency, including those of finance and foreign ministers, could not come out with consensus documents in view of opposition from Russia and China to any text referring to the Ukraine conflict.

Asserting that "today's era must not be of war", the New Delhi Declaration of G20 countries on Saturday called on all states to uphold the principles of international law including territorial integrity and sovereignty and said for the peaceful resolution of conflicts as well as diplomacy and dialogue are critical.
"Concerning the war in Ukraine, while recalling the discussion in Bali, we reiterated our national positions and resolutions adopted at the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly and underscored that all states must act in a manner consistent with the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter in its entirety," it said.
The declaration, the adoption of which was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the start of the second session of the G20 Leaders' Summit under India's Presidency, said that in line with the UN Charter, all states must refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state.
"The use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible," it added.
&nbsp;Reaffirming that the G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation, and recognising that while the G20 is not the platform to resolve geopolitical and security issues, the G20 leaders acknowledged that these issues can have significant consequences for the global economy.
"We highlighted the human suffering and negative added impacts of the war in Ukraine with regard to global food and energy security, supply chains, macro-financial stability, inflation and growth, which has complicated the policy environment for countries, especially developing and least developed countries which are still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic disruption which has derailed progress towards the SDGs." "There were different views and assessments of the situation," it noted.
The declaration further said,"We appreciate the efforts of Turkiye and UN-brokered Istanbul Agreements consisting of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Russian Federation and the Secretariat of the United Nations on Promoting Russian Food Products and Fertilizers to the World Markets and the Initiative on the Safe Transportation of Grain and Foodstuffs from Ukrainian Ports (Black Sea Initiative)." It called for their full, timely and effective implementation to ensure the immediate and unimpeded deliveries of grain, foodstuffs, and fertilizers/inputs from the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
"This is necessary to meet the demand in developing and least developed countries, particularly those in Africa," it added.
Emphasising the importance of sustaining food and energy security, the G20 leaders called for the "cessation of military destruction or other attacks on relevant infrastructure".
"We call on all states to uphold the principles of international law including territorial integrity and sovereignty, international humanitarian law, and the multilateral system that safeguards peace and stability.
"The peaceful resolution of conflicts and efforts to address crises as well as diplomacy and dialogue are critical.
"We will unite in our endeavour to address the adverse impact of the war on the global economy and welcome all relevant and constructive initiatives that support a comprehensive, just, and durable peace in Ukraine that will uphold all the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter for the promotion of peaceful, friendly, and good neighbourly relations among nations in the spirit of &lsquo;One Earth, One Family, One Future&rsquo;," it added.&nbsp;

Online delivery services will not be allowed in New Delhi district from September 8-10 as part of the massive security arrangements and restrictions for the G20 summit. However, delivery of medicines will be allowed in the area.&nbsp;
Delhi Police has said that essential services such as postal and medical services, sample collections by path labs will be allowed throughout Delhi. In the New Delhi area, commercial activities will not be allowed.
Speaking about restrictions on commute, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) SS Yadav shared that barring the Supreme Court station, metro services will not be affected.
"There might be closure of gates for 10-15 minutes at stations due to VIP movement and security restrictions. But apart from at Pragati Maidan (Supreme Court), metro services will not be affected at other stations," he added.
Yadav said people with hotel bookings in the New Delhi district and travelling from the airport or railway station will be allowed entry, subject to the production of boarding passes and booking documents.
"There might be 10-15-minute delays due to security restrictions at that point but they will be allowed entry," he added.
The G20 Leaders' Summit is scheduled to be held from September 9-10 at the newly built international convention and exhibition centre -- Bharat Mandapam -- at Pragati Maidan.

Keeping in view the advisory issued for security arrangements, these trains have been either cancelled or diverted to other routes or stations temporarily between Sep 8 and 11, an official statement said.
According to the Northern Railway, services of 207 trains have been terminated, terminals of 15 trains changed and routes of six trains diverted.
Besides, 70 trains, including Jammu Tawi-New Delhi Rajdhani, Tejas Rajdhani Hazrat Nizamuddin, Varanasi-New Delhi Tejas Rajdhani among others, have been given additional stoppage stations to minimise passenger discomfort, it said.
The origin and termination stations of 36 trains have also been changed and three trains will not stop at Delhi's Kishan Ganj during the summit, it said.
"People who have planned their travel during these days are advised to check the train timings and routes to avoid any inconvenience,&rdquo; a railway official said.&nbsp;

As New Delhi prepares to receive diplomats and world leaders for the G20 summit, three private and five government hospitals have been put on &ldquo;high alert.&rdquo;
Delhi&rsquo;s Health Ministry has put aside a team of 80 doctors that will work in shifts at the hotels reserved for the 2-day summit.
All life-saving facilities have been put in place at G20 venues, including a total of 106 ambulances that can be dispatched round-the-clock.
Lok Nayak Hospital has reserved 20 rooms, GB Pant Hospital 10 rooms, GTB Hospital 20 beds, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital 65 beds, and Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital has reserved 40 beds for addressing any situation that may arise during the G20 Summit, news agency PTI reported.

With the imminent G20 summit, hotel demand surges as tourists flock to witness related events in metropolitan areas. Consequently, hotel occupancy and room rates have returned to pre-pandemic levels.
Due to the existing demand-supply situation, room rates have been sometimes a little higher than the pre-pandemic, he told PTI in an interview.
"I understand there is very big demand at this time from not only G20 but also from tourists and people who are coming to the metropolitan cities to see all this happening in the cities and for that demand is quite high," Bezbaruah said.
Apparently, the prices also have gone up because it is primarily a demand and supply situation in the market, he added.
He was responding to a query on what feedback Hotel Association of India (HAI) was getting from its members in terms of room rate tariffs and occupancy with regard to demand from the G20 Summit.
On the impact of the high demand on room rates and occupancy, Bezbaruah said, "Basically what I can say is that occupancy rates and the room rates are back to pre-pandemic times. In fact the room rates have been sometimes a little higher than the pre-pandemic times but the view from the industry also is that you cannot take the rates as static when everything else is dynamic." Inflation is going up, people's income level is going up and it will have some impact on the rates, he reasoned.
When asked how much the rates have gone up, Bezbaruah said, "There is nothing like a percentage increase because it's a very, very composite industry. Some of the hotels have exclusive rates because of the service they provide." Smaller and medium hotels have their own rates, he added.
On preparation for the G20 Summit, he said main branded hotels in the metropolitan cities have been in close touch with the government and all the accommodation arrangements have been worked out in consultation with the government.
"Whatever facilities are required in the room rates or other facilities have been all worked out there so there is no problem there. There is no problem with accommodation so far as the main guests are concerned," Bezbaruah said.
The G20 summit will be held in the national capital from September 9 to 10.

The New Indian Express reported that the Delhi government may declare September 8, which is a Friday, a holiday to manage traffic movement and utilise public infrastructure.&nbsp;
The newspaper also reported that the Delhi government could also ask some offices to implement work from home between September 8 and 11.&nbsp;
The two-day G20 Summit will be held on September 9-10. However, related events, including sherpa meetings, and meetings of finance, energy and central bank deputies will begin from September 23.
The summit will take place at the newly developed convention centre at Pragati Maidan, while 23 hotels across the city have been designated for the stay of delegates of the event.
