Much before Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' moment stirred the football passion in Bengal, it was the Brazilian legend Pele who began the region's tryst with the 'beautiful game'.
Playing against Mohun Bagan at a jam-packed Eden Gardens in September 1977, the three-time World Cup winner was overwhelmed by the depth of talent the Indian club possessed.
Desperately seeking a revival after the dominance of arch-rivals East Bengal, Mohun Bagan not only stopped the 'King of Football' from scoring a goal but almost won 2-1 before a controversial penalty made it a 2-2 draw against the star-studded New York Cosmos.
But that wasn't the only visit Pele made to Kolkata.
In 2015, he was in the city during the Durga Puja festive period. Pele left even the former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, a Brazil fan, mesmerised by his aura.&nbsp;

Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser, who refereed the quarter-final and awarded the controversial goal after consulting with one of his linesmen, kept the match ball and waited 36 years before putting it up for sale at the auction, but the item failed to reach its reserve price.
Maradona also scored the second goal of the 2-1 victory - one of the greatest in World Cup history - and went on to lead Argentina to a 3-2 win over West Germany in the final.
The legendary footballer died in November 2020 at the age of 60.

The painting, located on the side of a 14-storey building, shows Maradona wearing his national team's jersey with his right hand in a fist and a defiant expression on his face.
Street artist Mart&iacute;n Ron was behind the mural, which he says was inspired by a photograph of the then-Argentine captain that captures his expression shortly before he sang the national anthem at the 1990 World Cup final against West Germany, which Argentina lost 1-0.
Ron claims the mural in the Argentine capital is the largest one of Maradona in the world.

Notably, after the match Maradona swapped shirts with England midfielder Steve Hodge who had been owned the shirt. Hodge loaned the jersey to be on public display at the National Football Museum in Manchester since 2002 and on April 6, Sotheby's announced the shirt was up for auction.
Argentina went on to win the World Cup in 1986 and Maradona, who died in 2020 enjoyed a hero status in Argentina from that match onwards.
