Diego Maradona ‘Hand of God’ football fails to sell despite £2m bid

The 'Hand of God' football that Diego Maradona famously punched over England goalkeeper Peter Shilton at the 1986 World Cup failed to sell at an auction on Wednesday despite a highest bid of £2-million pounds.

Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser, who refereed the quarter-final and awarded the controversial goal after consulting with one of his linesmen, kept the match ball and waited 36 years before putting it up for sale at the auction, but the item failed to reach its reserve price.

Maradona also scored the second goal of the 2-1 victory - one of the greatest in World Cup history - and went on to lead Argentina to a 3-2 win over West Germany in the final.

The legendary footballer died in November 2020 at the age of 60.
