The active cases now comprises 0.02 per cent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate has been recorded at 98.79 per cent, the ministry said.
A total 92.06 crore tests for detection of Covid has been conducted so far with 89,078 tests being conducted in the last 24 hours.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,41,60,997, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 per cent. &nbsp;According to the ministry's website, 220.65 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide vaccination drive.

Antibiotics should not be used in Covid cases unless there is clinical suspicion of bacterial infection, according to a revised guideline for the treatment of adult coronavirus patients issued by the Centre.
The revised guidelines, issued on Sunday amid an uptick in coronavirus cases, stated that drugs such as Lopinavir-ritonavir, hydroxychloroquine, Ivermectin, Molnupiravir, Favipiravir, Azithromycin and Doxycycline should not be used for the treatment of adult COVID-19 patients in India.
The AIIMS/ICMR-COVID-19 National Task Force met on January 5 to revise the clinical guidance protocol. It has also advised doctors not to use convalescent plasma therapy.
"Antibiotics should not be used unless there is clinical suspicion of bacterial infection. Possibility of co-infection of COVID-19 with other endemic infections must be considered," the guidelines said. &nbsp;Additionally, in moderate or severe diseases at high risk of progression, &nbsp;Remdesivir may be considered for up to five days. It should be started within 10 days of onset of symptoms in those having moderate to severe disease with a high risk of progression (requiring supplemental oxygen) but who are not on IMV or ECMO.
There is no evidence of benefit for the treatment of more than five days and is not to be used in patients who are not on oxygen support or in a home setting, the guidelines stated.
Besides, in rapidly progressing moderate or severe disease, Tocilizumab should be considered preferably within 24-48 hours of the onset of severe disease/ICU admission.

According to a study presented at the &nbsp;European Academy of Neurology (EAN), Covid-19 patients are at an increased risk of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer&rsquo;s, Parkinson&rsquo;s disease and ischaemic stroke.
For the study, researchers analysed the health records of 9,19,731 individuals from February 2020 to November 2021. They used statistical techniques to calculate relative risk and results were stratified for hospitalisation status, age, sex and comorbidities.
As per the findings, 43,375 people who tested positive had 3.5 times increased risk of being diagnosed with Alzheimer&rsquo;s disease, 2.6 times higher risk of Parkinson&rsquo;s disease and 2.7 times with ischaemic stroke.&nbsp;

According to a recent study, the Covid-19 causing SARS-CoV-2 virus may survive on meat and fish products in the fridge or freezer for up to 30 days.&nbsp;
Published in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, the research was conducted using chicken, beef, pork, salmon and surrogate viruses with spikes similar to those on SARS-CoV-2.&nbsp;
The team found that the Covid-19 virus can survive within various refrigerated or frozen meat products for a month. They also observed that the virus can replicate within the gut, as well as in the respiratory tract.
Continued efforts are needed to prevent contamination of food and food processing surfaces to prevent Covid-19 infection, researchers suggested.&nbsp;

Many hospitals across the country held mock drills on Tuesday to check preparedness of health facilities to deal with any spurt in Covid-19 cases, with Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya saying it was important to gauge operational readiness of equipment and human resources.
Mandaviya oversaw the drill at the Centre-run Safdarjung Hospital here, while health ministers reviewed the drill in their respective states.
The Centre has asked states and union territories to conduct the drill as part of precautionary measures following an increase in infection in China and other countries.
Officials said the mock drill focused on parameters such as the availability of health facilities in all districts, the capacity of isolation beds, oxygen-supported beds, ICU beds and ventilator-supported beds, and optimal availability of doctors, nurses, paramedics, AYUSH doctors, and other frontline workers, including ASHA and Anganwadi workers.
Mandaviya said the drill was necessary to know how prepared our hospitals are.

Chinese authorities are going door to door and paying people older than 60 to get vaccinated against Covid-19. But even as cases surge, 64-year-old Li Liansheng said his friends are alarmed by stories of fevers, blood clots and other side effects.
&ldquo;When people hear about such incidents, they may not be willing to take the vaccines,&rdquo; said Li, who had been vaccinated before he caught Covid-19. A few days after his 10-day bout with the virus, Li is nursing a sore throat and cough. He said it was like a &ldquo;normal cold&rdquo; with a mild fever.

The National Health Commission announced a campaign Nov. 29 to raise the vaccination rate among older Chinese, which health experts say is crucial to avoiding a health care crisis. It's also the biggest hurdle before the ruling Communist Party can lift the last of the world's most stringent antivirus restrictions.
China kept case numbers low for two years with a &ldquo;zero-Covid&rdquo; strategy that isolated cities and confined millions of people to their homes. Now, as it backs off that approach, it is facing the widespread outbreaks that other countries have already gone through.
The health commission has recorded only six Covid-19 fatalities this month, bringing the country's official toll to 5,241. That is despite multiple reports by families of relatives dying.
China only counts deaths from pneumonia or respiratory failure in its official Covid-19 toll, a health official said last week. That unusually narrow definition excludes many deaths other countries would attribute to Covid.
Experts have forecast 1 to 2 million deaths in China through the end of 2023.
Li, who was exercising at the leafy grounds of central Beijing's Temple of Heaven, said he is considering getting a second booster due to the publicity campaign: &ldquo;As long as we know the vaccine won't cause big side effects, we should take it.&rdquo; Neighborhood committees that form the lowest level of government have been ordered to find everyone 65 and older and keep track of their health. They are doing what state media call the &ldquo;ideological work&rdquo; of lobbying residents to persuade elderly relatives to get vaccinated.
In Beijing, the Chinese capital, the Liulidun neighborhood is promising people over 60 up to 500 yuan ($70) to get a two-dose vaccination course and one booster.
The National Health Commission announced Dec. 23 the number of people being vaccinated daily had more than doubled to 3.5 million nationwide. But that still is a small fraction of the tens of millions of shots that were being administered every day in early 2021.
Older people are put off by potential side effects of Chinese-made vaccines, for which the government hasn't announced results of testing on people in their 60s and older.
Li said a 55-year-old friend suffered fevers and blood clots after being vaccinated. He said they can't be sure the shot was to blame, but his friend is reluctant to get another.
&ldquo;It's also said the virus keeps mutating,&rdquo; Li said. &ldquo;How do we know if the vaccines we take are useful?&rdquo; Some are reluctant because they have diabetes, heart problems and other health complications, despite warnings from experts that it is even more urgent for them to be vaccinated because the risks of Covid-19 are more serious than potential vaccine side effects in almost everyone.
A 76-year-old man taking his daily walk around the Temple of Heaven with the aid of a stick said he wants to be vaccinated but has diabetes and high blood pressure. The man, who would give only his surname, Fu, said he wears masks and tries to avoid crowds.
Older people also felt little urgency because low case numbers before the latest surge meant few faced risk of infection. That earlier lack of infections, however, left China with few people who have developed antibodies against the virus.
&ldquo;Now, the families and relatives of the elderly people should make it clear to them that an infection can cause serious illness and even death,&rdquo; said Jiang Shibo of the Fudan University medical school in Shanghai.
More than 90% of people in China have been vaccinated but only about two-thirds of those over 80, according to the National Health Commission. According to its 2020 census, China has 191 million people aged 65 and over &mdash; a group that, on its own, would be the eighth most populous country, ahead of Bangladesh.

A 40-year-old man, who returned from China two days back, has tested positive for COVID-19 following which he has been isolated at his home here, Chief Medical Officer Arun Srivastava said on Sunday.
His samples will be sent to Lucknow for genome sequencing, he said.
"The man has been isolated at his home and teams of the health department have been asked to conduct tests of his family members and those who came in contact with him," Srivastava added.

This the first Covid positive case in the district detected after November 25, officials said.

WHO has expressed serious concern over the evolving coronavirus situation in China. WHO chief in an address to the press on Wednesday urged China to vaccinate high risk patients and appealed for detailed information on disease severity, hospital admissions and intensive care requirements.
&ldquo;We continue to hold out hope that China will share the data and conduct the studies we have requested, and which we continue to request. As I have said many times before, all hypotheses about the origins of this pandemic remain on the table,&rdquo; WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a weekly news conference.
