Covid: USA reacts to China's threat of 'countermeasures' after countries impose special travel rules

The Joe Biden government said that there is no reason for Beijing to "retaliate" as countries are taking "prudent measures to protect their citizens".

The American government on 3 January 2023 reacted to China's threats of "countermeasures" after some countries imposed special rules on travellers from China as the country sees a massive Covid surge.

The Joe Biden government said that there is no reason for Beijing to "retaliate" as countries are taking "prudent measures to protect their citizens". The White House said that the decisions are based on "public health and science", and recommended by experts.

China had called the travel rules "unacceptable" and without "scientific basis".

America had earlier criticised Beijing for lack of transparency in furnishing of Covid data amid a wave of infections.
