Taking a look at these elections: 
Of the candidates analysed from the first 5 phases:
790 have criminal cases against them. 607 have serious criminal cases. 50 have cases related to crimes against women and of the 292 constituencies, 154 are Red Alert constituencies - which means 3 or more candidates contesting have criminal charges against them.
In the major parties - the BJP has fielded 120 candidates with criminal cases against them, BSP 111, INC 118, and Samajwadi Party in clear lead with a whopping 159.
It would be an incomplete conversation if one were to talk about Gunda Raaj without mentioning that it's Samajwadi Party who's been infamous for allegedly allowing its leaders to get away with anything - literally. Even the latest recruits into the SP are from the Tiwari clan - where Patriarch Hari Shankar Tiwari is credited with founding the crime politics nexus in UP in the 80s. Some even go as far as to say that this heightened period of criminality in politics ushered in a change of regime in UP.
 
It would make sense that a government so against crime, wouldn’t want its poster boy to be a person accused of hate speech, rioting, arson, defiling places of worship and attempt to murder.
But....

Yogi government exonerates Yogi government
Shortly after coming to power in 2017, the Yogi government told the Allahabad High Court that the government has denied permission for the prosecution of the CM in a 2007 case of hate speech made during the Gorakhpur riots. Let’s take a look at the sitting MLAs in the UP Vidhan Sabha today. Out of 396 sitting MLAs, 140 (35%) MLAs have declared criminal cases against them. 106 (27%) have declared serious criminal cases. For example BJP MLA from Agra South Yogendra Upadhyay has an attempt to murder charge against him. Mukhtar Ansari of the BSP who is currently in prison, has 5 charges of murder against him - these are just 2 of the 106 examples.
 
If the wheels of money and crime go hand in hand - one can reason why political parties field those with criminal antecedents on their ballots - but what's the reasoning for those ticking the ballots?
Criminal records do not deter votes.

Poll Booth Officials have it tough - in principle, through a utopian lens, the job is simple - ensure free and fair polling. In reality, these officers have to deal with netas, party workers, media and the urge to dress well.
Take for example Salawa village’s Booth 131 where BJP MLA Sangeet Som allegedly slapped a polling official during the first phase of the voting. We say alleged - the police waiting for nearly 10 hours for the official to file a complaint. He didn't. The police themselves did. Oh, by the way, this FIR becomes the 8th case against the MLA. He’s yet to be convicted for any. 
Another neta that had an FIR filed against her is Pramila Pandey. The Kanpur Mayor got herself photographed voting for BJP. While the enthusiasm for democracy is commendable, breaking the law isn’t. You can’t sneak a snap with the EVM. Against EC rules.
Another EC rule - don't show up drunk at the polling booth. Big no-no. Especially if you are in-charge of the said polling booth! In Puranpur’s booth number 325, things got a little out of hand.
Talking about things getting out of hand - Reena Dwivedi is back in news. The electoral official made the headlines during 2019 Lok Sabha polls for showing up to work. Yes, Dwivedi became an overnight sensation for showing up to work dressed well.

While the audience cheered, some of his party colleagues tried to stop him. But Chaubey remained determined in his penance.

In visuals that have gone viral on social media, several members of the Rashtriya Bajrang Dal, including women in saffron scarves were seen harassing a young couple and threatening to send a girl to jail if she did not call her parents. The mob slapped and abused the boy accompanying her. Earlier in the week, the same hooligans were also seen hanging up the effigy of Saint Valentine, claiming that these festivals were a western influence and had no place in our culture. An FIR has been registered against the accused involved in the incident.

In visuals that have gone viral on social media, several members of the Rashtriya Bajrang Dal, including women in saffron scarves were seen harassing a young couple and threatening to send a girl to jail if she did not call her parents. The mob slapped and abused the boy accompanying her.   Earlier in the week, the same hooligans were also seen hanging up the effigy of Saint Valentine, claiming that these festivals were a western influence and had no place in our culture. An FIR has been registered against the accused involved in the incident.

But, let&rsquo;s do with the numbers we have
From the estimated 21% strong bloc of Scheduled Castes and a minuscule Scheduled Tribe - Jatavs dominate the SC vote with almost 55% stake. Then come the non-Jatavs - the Pasis, Dhobis, Koris, Khatiks, Dhanuks and other non-Jatav communtities
The grand old party enjoyed the support of this bloc for decades after independence. Then came the game changer in 1990s - Kanshi Ram&rsquo;s Bahujan Samaj Party aka the Dalit party
Historically, BSP has always had the allegiance of the Dalit bloc since its inception, barring the peak of the Ram Janmbhoomi movement when the bloc aligned with BJP
Let&rsquo;s focus on post Y2K allegiance -
In 2002, BSP garnered&nbsp;23.06% of the total vote share, winning 98 seats in the Assembly
Then came Mayawati&rsquo;s master stroke in 2007 - the Brahmin-Dalit alliance strategy that led the party to absolute majority in the state. From 23% to over 30% vote share. A jump from 98 seats to 206 seats.
In 2012, wooed by the Hindutva pitch, Brahmins chose saffron and dumped BSP. The party&rsquo;s vote share dropped to 25.91% and it gained only 80 seats.
Angry with Behenji for alleged preference to Jatavs - her own caste - the non-Jatav Dalits who constitute 43% of the bloc came under the saffron umbrella
BJP exploited this Jatav vs Non-Jatav fault line for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls

The first phase of the 7-phase Uttar Pradesh assembly elections started on February 10. 58 constituencies of the 11 districts in the western region of the state are casting their ballot.
