A Chinese man and his girlfriend were executed for throwing his two children from the 15th floor of a high-rise apartment in Chongqing as they wanted to start a new family together.
Zhang Bo, and his girlfriend, Ye Chengchen were sentenced to death by China's top court in 2021, but they were executed this week after a lengthy appeal process.&nbsp;
According to Global Times, Zhang Bo threw his two-year-old daughter and one-year-old son to their deaths from the 15th floor on November 2, 2020, after Ye convinced him to do so to start a new family.&nbsp;
Police said that the man and his girlfriend conspired to murder the two infant children and local prosecutors filed charges against the duo for intentional homicide.&nbsp;
Chongqing public prosecutor's office in the indictment stated that Zhang and Ye met through social media and later on, started dating. The man was a divorcee and he was repeatedly told by his girlfriend that she viewed the children as an "obstacle" in their relationship.&nbsp;
The couple had several discussions about killing the two children. Later, they came to the conclusion that they would plot an accidental kill, which would lead to the infant children's death.&nbsp;
The first trial in this case took place in July 2021, during which the children's mother, Chen Meilin, sought compensation in court and demanded strict punishment for her ex-husband and his girlfriend.&nbsp;
A court in Chongqing sentenced Zhang and Ye to death on December 28, 2021, for the crime of intentional homicide. Zhang and Ye then filed appeals.
In 2023, the second trial took place in this case where &nbsp;Zhang withdrew his previous confession of committing the crime in a court, claiming that his children's deaths were due to an accident.&nbsp;
Recently, the Supreme People&rsquo;s Court, China's highest court, upheld the death penalty for Zhang and Ye and ruled that they had intentionally and illegally deprived the lives of others.

Parents of more than 18,000 children were asked to complete questionnaires about their children&rsquo;s diets. &nbsp;&nbsp;
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, children who get less than 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day; girls between 2 and 3 should eat 1 cup of fruits and 1 cup of vegetables daily, and girls from 4 to 8 should eat 1 to 1.5 cups of fruits and 1 to 1.5 cups of vegetables per day. Whereas boys between 2 and 3 need 1 cup of fruits and 1 cup of vegetables daily, and boys from 4 to 8 should eat 1 to 1.5 cups of fruits and 1.5 cups of vegetables daily.&nbsp;

Adenovirus scare: Mamata Banerjee urges people to wear face masks after 6 kids die

The chief minister had last week said ample measures are being taken by her administration to tackle with the adenovirus situation.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said six children have so far died in the state due to adenovirus, and urged people to start using face masks again to combat the menace.
Banerjee also said one of her family members has been infected by the virus, but did not elaborate on the development.
"So far, 19 people have died due to Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI), and out of them, 13 had comorbidities and six (deaths of children) were due to adenovirus. I urge people to start wearing face masks for the time-being,&rdquo; she said at the state assembly.
&ldquo;Do not panic and see a doctor immediately if you are having fever," the CM added.

Banerjee also claimed that health services have improved a lot in Bengal compared to the Covid period.
Taking a jibe at the opposition for questioning the health infrastructure in the state, she said that during the Left Front rule, no special newborn care units existed, while at present, there are over 2,486 SNCUs at 138 hospitals.
The chief minister had last week said ample measures are being taken by her administration to tackle with the adenovirus situation.
&ldquo;We have readied 5,000 beds and 600 doctors have been tasked with the responsibility of dealing with such cases,&rdquo; she had told reporters.
West Bengal has been witnessing child deaths, primarily due to ARI, since the last few weeks.

Children who participated in the research played video games for 2.5 hours and some played for 4.5 hours daily. For research, the performance of the cognitive ability test of children playing video games was checked and it was revealed that the time of playing video games and the type of video games had no direct effect on cognitive performance.
Besides this, the study also revealed that the games children play to increase healthy cognitive skills do not help much in increasing their skills.

A recent study conducted by the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics found that more than 1 in 5 kids and adolescents show symptoms of disordered eating.&nbsp;
Researchers gathered the data for meta-analysis and reviewed 32 studies from 16 countries and found that 22 per cent of children and adolescents show disordered eating behaviour. The final results showed higher numbers in girls, older children and those with higher body mass index (BMI). &nbsp;
However, disordered eating can be in various forms like dieting, weight fluctuation and feeling of guilt associated with eating. The meta-analysis&rsquo;s authors also declared that eating disorders are among the most life-threatening psychiatric problems, and people with these conditions might face premature death.

The research analysed the associations between maternal diabetes and the risk of high refractive error (RE). RE is one of the most common forms of visual impairment that includes both long and short-sightedness.
The long-term study looked at data from approximately 2.4 million people born in Denmark between 1977 and 2016. Of these individuals, over 56,000 were exposed to their mother's diabetes during pregnancy, including 0.9% with type 1 diabetes, 0.3% with type 2 diabetes and 1.1% with gestational diabetes.
As per the findings, children born to mothers with diabetes were at a 39% greater risk of high refractive error compared to children without diabetic mothers. Researchers also concluded that hypermetropia (long-sightedness) occurred more frequently in childhood and myopia (short-sightedness) was more frequent in adolescence and young adulthood.

India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation has been in touch with Uzbekistan's national drugs regulator since December 27,
Health minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Twitter, in what is the government's first statement on the deaths of children in Uzbekistan after consuming a cough syrup made by an Indian manufacturer.
In a series of tweets on December 29, the Health Minister informed that a probe has been launched on the matter and samples of the cough syrup have been sent to a testing laboratory in Chandigarh.

There is no second opinion about the fact that there has been an evident increase in our screen time post pandemic. However, the screen time for children has increased much more since COVID. A recent survey has revealed that the screen time of children have drastically increased by 52% between 2020 and 2022. The rise is mostly for children between 12-18 years.&nbsp;
With technology becoming a part and parcel of our lives, it is difficult for parents to cut down on children&rsquo;s screen time as they rely upon electronic gadgets for almost everything, way more than before. As per the restaurant's policy, children will be welcomed but a $10 surcharge would be imposed if they scream and end up disturbing other guests.

There has been no significant progress in the standards of children&rsquo;s lives and rights across the world over the last decade according to the latest report by KidsRights Index. One billion children are at 'extremely high risk' from global climate impacts

Nearly one billion children are at "extremely high risk" due to climate change harms, a rights group warned on Wednesday, adding that youths' living standards failed to improve in the last decade.
The KidsRights index, based on figures supplied by UN agencies, also said more than one-third of the world's children, some 820 million, were currently exposed to heatwaves.
Water scarcity affected 920 million children worldwide, while diseases such as malaria and dengue affected some 600 million children, or one in every four, Dutch NGO KidsRights said.
The KidsRights Index is the first and only ranking that measures how children's rights are respected annually, ranking Iceland, Sweden, and Finland as the best for children's rights and Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Chad as the worst, out of 185 countries.
Of the top three nations, only Sweden's ranking changed from the previous year, moving to second from fourth place.
Marc Dullaert, founder and chairman of KidsRights, described this year's report as "alarming for our current and future generations of children."
"A rapidly changing climate is now threatening their futures and their basic rights," he said.
"There has been no significant progress in the standards of children's lives over the past decade and on top of that their livelihoods have been severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic," Dullaert added.
The Covid-19 pandemic had a severe impact on children, who were unable to get food or medicine due to disruptions and the closure of clinics, leading to some 286,000 under the age of five years dying as a result, KidsRights said.
For the first time in two decades, the number of child labourers has risen to 160 million, representing an increase of 8.4 million over the last four years, said the KidsRights Index, which is compiled together with Rotterdam's Erasmus University.
KidsRights highlighted Angola and Bangladesh, saying the two countries significantly improved their scores in regards to children's rights.
Angola has more than halved its under-five child mortality, while Bangladesh has reduced the number of underweight children under five years by almost half.
But the report also slapped Montenegro for low vaccination numbers, ranked 49 on the index.
The survey uses UN data to measure how countries measure up to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
