It would be the first export of the BrahMos missile by India.
A few other countries including Argentina have also shown interest in procuring BrahMos missiles from India.
BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd, an India-Russian joint venture, produces the supersonic cruise missiles that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms.
BrahMos missile flies at a speed of 2.8 Mach or almost three times the speed of sound.
India has been looking at further expanding defence ties with the Philippines against the backdrop of growing global concerns over China's increasing military assertiveness in the South China Sea.

BrahMos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd. (BAPL) is a joint venture between India and Russia, making crucial contribution to augment the new generation surface-to-surface missiles (SSMs) with enhanced range and dual role capability for land as well as anti-ship attacks, it said.  "Providing further impetus to Aatmanirbharta in defence production, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) signed a contract today with M/s BrahMos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd. (BAPL) for acquisition of additional dual-role capable Surface to Surface BrahMos missiles at an overall approximate cost of Rs 1,700 Crore under 'Buy-Indian Category'," the statement said. 
This contract is going to give further boost to indigenous production of critical weapon system and ammunition with active participation of indigenous industry, it added.

Reports suggest that at the time of the incident, a missile unit near Ambala, Haryana was undergoing inspection. This included checking of safety, and operational efficiency. A deviation from standard operating procedure for BrahMos led to the launch of an unarmed missile. A probe found 3 Indian Air Force officers guilty of violating missile SOPs. A Group Captain commanding the missile unit, a Wing Commander, and a Squadron Leader were reportedly found responsible.
Meanwhile, a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer took quick action which helped avert a bigger disaster after the missile had been launched.
The incident expectedly caused concern among government officials.
Following the missile misfire, the Indian government reviewed standard operating procedures for missile units. Operations, maintenance, and inspection SOPs were reviewed and updated. Firing and training protocols were also revised for Indian Air Force missile units. Additional safety measures were also implemented.
The government was quick to take action because the BrahMos is a very important weapon, and not just for the country's defence.

At 6:43 pm local time, Pakistan Air Force claimed to have detected a 'supersonic flying object' in Indian airspace. The missile was 104 km from the border, and at an altitude of 40,000 feet. The projectile originated at a point near Sirsa, Haryana, according to Pakistan.
Subsequently, the missile flew at a speed of Mach 2.5 to 3 towards Rajasthan. It appeared to be headed towards the Mahajan field firing range. After 70-80 km, Pakistan said that the missile turned towards it. The rogue BrahMos entered Pakistani airspace from Suratgarh, Rajasthan.
Islamabad claimed that the missile flew in its airspace for 3 minutes, 44 seconds. In this time, the BrahMos covered 124 km. At 6:50 pm, the missile fell near Mia Channu city. The unarmed missile's impact damaged some civilian property in the area, but no casualties occurred.

One of these is the HQ-16 LOMADS, or Low to Medium Altitude Air Defence System. It is made by China, and was inducted into Pakistani forces in 2017. Its effective range is claimed to be 3.5-18 km against cruise missiles, like BrahMos. It can intercept low-flying targets at up to 40 km. The HQ-16 is claimed to have the capability to hit targets at 400 to 10,000 metre-altitude. Chinese commentators have called it a BrahMos deterrent.
The second is the HQ-9 HIMADS, or High to Medium Altitude Air Defence System. This is also made by China, and was inducted into Pakistani forces in 2021. It is claimed to have the capability to intercept multiple aerial targets like cruise missiles, and aircraft. Pakistan military claims it can also intercept beyond-visual-range, or BVR, weapons at a range of 100 km. The HQ-9 has a single-shot kill probability, along with a 120-km detection range, and 90-km tracking range.
But when the BrahMos missile flew over 100 km inside Pakistani territory, these defence systems were conspicuously absent. Why wasn't the rogue missile shot down?
One possibility is that the Pakistani military was caught off-guard and unprepared. Another reason could be that the Pakistani missile defence systems simply lacked the capability to intercept the BrahMos. A third possibility could be that a missile defence system was not in range of the rogue missile. Finally, Islamabad - the political capital - and Rawalpindi - the military power-centre - did not want the situation to escalate.
Whatever the reason, the incident has again proven, even if accidentally, that the BrahMos is a deadly weapon. Here is why the missile made by India and Russia is special.

The attack, the BrahMos carries an explosive warhead weighing 200 to 300 kg. It has a 290 km range, and flies at supersonic speeds throughout. The missile's cruising altitude is up to 15 km, and near the target it flies as low as 10 m.
What makes the BrahMos special is that firstly, it is almost impossible to intercept, with a low radar signature. High speed means shorter flight time, which further means less time for the target to react. The versatile missile can be launched from land, sea, and air. Also, high kinetic energy increases its destructive power.
The BrahMos worries Pakistan because its capital Islamabad is within reach of the missile launched from a north Indian base, as per experts. The incident has predictably caused a fresh flashpoint between India and Pakistan.

The Foreign Office in a late Wednesday night statement said Pakistan has seen India's announcement of the findings of an internal CoI regarding the "incident of firing of a rogue supersonic missile" into its territory and the decision to terminate the services of three IAF officers reportedly found responsible for the reckless incident.
"Pakistan categorically rejects India's purported closure of the highly irresponsible incident and reiterates its demand for a joint probe," it said.

The services of three officers of the Indian Air Force were terminated on August 23 after a Court of Inquiry (CoI) found that deviation from the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) by them led to the accidental firing of the missile.
The Foreign Office in a late Wednesday night statement said Pakistan has seen India's announcement of the findings of an internal CoI regarding the "incident of firing of a rogue supersonic missile" into its territory and the decision to terminate the services of three IAF officers reportedly found responsible for the reckless incident.
"Pakistan categorically rejects India's purported closure of the highly irresponsible incident and reiterates its demand for a joint probe," it said. 
"As expected, the measures taken by India in the aftermath of the incident and the subsequent findings and punishments handed by the so-called internal Court of Inquiry are totally unsatisfactory, deficient and inadequate." It alleged that India has not only failed to respond to Pakistan's demand for a joint inquiry but has also evaded the questions raised by Pakistan regarding the command and control system in place in India, the safety and security protocols and the "reason for India's delayed admission of the missile launch".
It said systemic loopholes and technical lapses of serious nature in handling of strategic weapons "cannot be covered up beneath the veneer of individual human error".
"If indeed India has nothing to hide, it must accept Pakistan's demand for a joint probe in the spirit of transparency," it demanded.
It further said the "imprudent Indian action" of March 9 had "jeopardized" the peace and security environment of the entire region while "Pakistan showed exemplary restraint" which was a testament of its systemic maturity and abiding commitment to peace as a responsible nuclear state.
Pakistan reiterated its demand that the Indian government must immediately provide specific responses to the queries raised by Islamabad after the incident and accedes to its call for a joint probe.

The defence ministry on Tuesday terminated the services of three officials of the Indian Air Force after a high-level probe held them responsible for the March 9 accidental firing of a Brahmos missile that landed in Pakistan.
The Court of Inquiry (CoA) into the incident found that deviation from the SOP by three officers led to the accidental firing of the missile.
Following the incident, the defence ministry described it as "deeply regrettable".
"A BrahMos missile was accidentally fired on March 9. A Court of Inquiry (Col), set up to establish the facts of the case, including fixing responsibility for the incident, found that deviation from the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) by three officers led to the accidental firing of the missile," an official statement said.
"These three officers have primarily been held responsible for the incident. Their services have been terminated by the central government with immediate effect. Termination orders have been served upon the officers on August 23," it said.

Hypersonic weapons were recently in news when Russia claimed to have used its Kinzhal missile for the first time in conflict. The Kinzhal, which means 'dagger' in Russia, can reportedly fly at up to ten times the speed of sound, and can carry a 480-kg nuclear payload.

 Following the incident, a senior Philippines minister sought details from India's envoy.&nbsp;On April 5, during an online interaction organised by the Ananta Aspen Centre, India's ambassador to Philippines said, "I won&rsquo;t call it a concern, but there was a query&hellip; I did have a conversation with the Defence Secretary, and explained to him that there was no technical issue (with the system) and an enquiry is underway."
