Airlines are price takers as they do not have an influence on the prices they pay, IATA Chief Economist Marie Owens Thomsen has said and highlighted that carriers&rsquo; need to diversify their revenues is complicated by slim profit margins as well as weak balance sheets.
In a fast-growing aviation market like India where the air traffic demand is on the rise, there are persistent concerns about airfare trajectory and suggestions from various quarters to make air tickets more affordable.
Discussing overall airfares and the costs of airlines, Thomsen said airlines do not have any influence on the prices they pay.
&ldquo;There are too few aircraft manufacturers and oil companies. Whatever supplies we are looking at upstream, we are price takers and downstream, we have the hyper-competitive environment where all customers can see all fares from all airlines at all times. So, we always compete in price,&rdquo; she told PTI in an interview in Geneva earlier this week. Thomsen, who is the Chief Economist and Senior Vice President for Sustainability, said as airlines are price takers upstream and downstream, it leaves them with very little in the middle.

&ldquo;This indicates that air ticket prices have not fully kept up with inflation, especially in comparison to jet fuel costs, which have significantly outpaced consumer inflation,&rdquo; the study said.
Currently, jet fuel accounts for around 30 per cent of airlines&rsquo; operating costs.
To a question on whether there can be more transparency in the pricing of air tickets, Thomsen argued that if airlines were profiteering, the per-passenger profit would have been much higher.
&ldquo;When you have high ticket prices and low airline profits, then the money is going somewhere else,&rdquo; she said, pointing out that a third and a 50 per cent of the airline industry&rsquo;s costs are administrative costs.
&ldquo;The rest (of the costs) is actually for services of flying people or cargo,&rdquo; Thomsen noted.
As per IATA&rsquo;s latest outlook for 2025, airlines are projected to have a net profit of USD 1.8 per passenger while the overall net profit is expected to be USD 3.6 billion.
&ldquo;You can have a lot of activity and a big market and make no profit because your cost base is too high. Lot of them come from various types of regulatory fees and charges levied on airlines,&rdquo; Thomsen pointed out.
According to her, there is a need for revenue diversification by airlines but the situation is complicated by slim profit margins and weak balance sheets most airlines suffer from.
IATA represents around 340 airlines globally, including Indian carriers. The member airlines account for more than 80 per cent of the global air traffic. (Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by Editorji News Desk and is published from a syndicated feed.)

In separate incidents on Monday, two SpiceJet flights were diverted to alternate airports due to technical issues, ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew members on board.
The first incident occurred with a Delhi-Shillong SpiceJet flight, which experienced a mid-air technical glitch and was forced to divert to Patna. The aircraft safely landed at Patna&rsquo;s Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport at 8:52 am. According to Patna Airport Director Anchal Prakash, the emergency landing was prompted by a bird strike, but the aircraft landed without incident, and all passengers and crew were unharmed. &ldquo;Alternative arrangements are being made for the passengers,&rdquo; Prakash confirmed.
The second incident involved a Kochi-bound SpiceJet flight, which was carrying 117 passengers and crew. The private carrier made an emergency landing in Chennai after a technical issue was detected mid-flight. The SpiceJet Q400 aircraft, which had originally departed from Chennai, returned to the airport and landed safely. A SpiceJet spokesperson assured that safety measures were in place, and passengers were deplaned upon arrival.
In both cases, the airline emphasized the safety of the passengers and crew, with both aircraft landing without any injuries. The incidents highlight the airline's commitment to ensuring the well-being of everyone on board in the event of technical difficulties.

United Airlines said Monday it has discovered loose bolts on Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes in its fleet during preliminary inspections following an Alaska Airlines mid-flight incident.
United has "found instances that appear to relate to installation issues in the door plug -- for example, bolts that needed additional tightening," the carrier said.
On Friday, an Alaska Airlines passenger plane made an emergency landing after the door plug component blew out.
"We're working to return our Boeing 737 MAX 9s to service in the days ahead," United said in a statement.
United has canceled 200 MAX 9 flights since the incident and expects "significant cancelations" on Tuesday, the carrier said.
A door plug is a cover panel used to fill an unneeded emergency exit in planes with smaller seat configurations.
Following the Alaska Airlines incident, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered operators to ground 171 jets with the same configuration.
US investigators continue to probe Friday's incident, but analysts have posited that the fault may stem from a manufacturing or quality control defect.
With 79 MAX 9 planes, United has the largest fleet of the aircraft in question.
On Monday, the FAA announced that it approved a roadmap for carriers to complete inspections that include both left and right door plugs, components and fasteners.
However, United said it was still awaiting final approval on the full inspection process.

Nine passengers were injured after an engine fire sent smoke into the cabin of an Air China jetliner landing in Singapore, prompting an evacuation of the aircraft.
The Airbus A320 with 146 passengers and nine crew made an emergency landing at about 4:15 pm Sunday, Changi Airport said in a statement on its Facebook page. The flight was coming from the city of Chengdu in China's Sichuan province.
Nine people had minor injuries related to smoke inhalation and abrasions during the evacuation, the statement said.
The pilot declared an emergency after reporting smoke in the forward cargo hold and a lavatory. Smoke blurred the lights in the cabin and flight attendants told people to remain calm and stay in their seats after some stood up, a passenger told Chinese media.
The fire in the left engine was extinguished after the plane landed, Chinese media said. A preliminary investigation indicated a mechanical failure in the engine was the cause, Air China said in a statement posted on social media early Monday.
The investigation was continuing.&nbsp;

Petrol and diesel prices, meanwhile, were unchanged for a record 14th month in a row.&nbsp;

A Dubai-bound aircraft with nearly 150 people on board on Monday reported a problem in one of its engines soon after taking off from the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu according to airport sources.
The FlyDubai aircraft heading towards Dubai returned back and hovered over the skies in Dharke after a problem was reported in one of its engines, sources said.
The pilots later told the control tower they will continue after finding out that all indicators are normal.
&ldquo;The aircraft switched off its engine for some time after encountering the problem and now it is heading towards the destination without landing in Kathmandu airport,&rdquo; Deputy Director of Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal was quoted as saying by a private television news channel.
The aircraft took off from Tribhuvan International Airport at 9.20 am.
Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Sudan Kirati shared on his Facebook account that the FlyDubai plane was flying to its destination safely and urged all not to worry about it.
Earlier, it was reported that preparations are underway for an emergency landing of the Boeing 737-800 aircraft at the airport here.
There are more than 150 people on board including 50 Nepali passengers.
Eye-witnesses claimed they saw aircraft catching fire in the Kathmandu sky.
Fire engines were kept on alert at the airport, according to sources.
The airport has now resumed its operation, said Pratap Babu Tiwari, general manager of Tribhuvan International Airport.
&ldquo;Fly Dubai flight number 576 (Boeing 737-800) Kathmandu to Dubai flight is normal now and proceeding to her destination Dubai as per the flight plan,&rdquo; Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) said in a tweet.

According to an order, dated March 16, passed by the civil aviation ministry, the airline's security programme will remain suspended from 1200 hours to 1400 hours on April 1 and the carrier has also been asked to take suitable action to minimise the impact of the suspension on the passengers.
There was no immediate comment from Go First.
According to a senior ministry official, the suspension of the security programme means that there will be no flight operations and the latest directive is a kind of warning for the violation.
On September 24, 2022, Go First's Delhi-Mumbai flight returned from the taxiway due to a technical snag.

The government is preparing to privatise the low cost carrier Alliance air and India's largest MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) player Air India Engineering services, simultaneously.&nbsp;
"The process of disinvestment of both the companies will be done simultaneously. Expressions of interest (EoIs) will be invited by the government in due course", Rajiv Bansal, civil aviation secretary said while speaking at the CAPA India Aviation Summit.&nbsp;
Bansal mentioned that the first and second steps of holding roadshows for the divestment of AIESL and the second step of approval from the group of ministers are completed. The final approval from the Alternative Mechanism for Disinvestment, a top ministerial panel, is awaited following which the expressions of interest will be invited, as per a report by Financial Express&nbsp;
AIESL, AIASL, and AAAL were subsidiaries of Air India when the government owned it. However, they were not part of Air India's privatisation. The Tata group took control of Air India from the government in January last year.
The divestment of Alliance Air has been in the works since the middle of last year but there hasn&rsquo;t been any formal EOI so far.

Indian airlines are projected to record a consolidated loss of USD 1.6-1.8 billion in the next financial year, aviation consultancy CAPA India said on Monday.
The full-service carriers are expected to incur a loss of USD 1.1-1.2 billion.
According to CAPA India's forecast for 2023-24, Indian airlines are estimated to have a net induction of 132 planes next fiscal and will take the total fleet of all carriers to around 816 aircraft.
An increase in ATF prices would put pressure on costs. Also, there could be a decline in yields as a result of significant capacity addition, it added.
"Domestic and international air traffic are expected to be in the range of "160+ million and 72-75 million in FY2024, respectively, with both increasing 20 per cent or more y-o-y," it said.
In the next fiscal, Indian airlines are expected to see a net addition of 132 planes and the total fleet size is projected to be 816. For this financial year, the fleet size is estimated at 684, including those aircraft on the ground.
CAPA India also said that more than 100 planes of various Indian carriers are on the ground due to supply chain and non-supply chain issues.&nbsp;

In a move to give a big relief to domestic carriers, the Maharashtra government has announced a reduction in the value added tax levied on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to 18 per cent from 25 per cent.&nbsp;
The new rate will be applicable in Mumbai, Pune and Raigad districts, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced in his budget speech. Maharashtra levies 4 per cent VAT on ATF in districts except Mumbai and Pune. According to reports, the new rate could help in reducing fuel expenses for airlines as they rework their fueling uplift plans but it is not expected to add to many new flights as both Mumbai and Pune airports are constrained for slots. Fuel costs account for 30-40 per cent of the airlines' expenses.&nbsp;The issue of reduction in Value-Added Tax (VAT) on ATF was taken up with states/Union Territories levying high VATs on ATF and many of them reduced the tax on aviation fuel in the last many months.
To ensure financial viability in the sector, Union aviation minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia has been asking states to cut VAT on ATF.&nbsp;
"In a scenario of high fuel prices, this step will prove to be a catalyst in our efforts to ramp up air connectivity. With this, Maharashtra joins the league of total 19 States/UTs that have rationalised VAT rates in the last 1.5 years. Alongside enhanced connectivity for Mumbai, Pune &amp; Raigad, this will also make travel more affordable, and boost growth", said Scindia in a tweet.&nbsp;

Tata owned airline Air India sealed a deal for 470 aircraft - 250 from Airbus and 220 from Boeing. This ia the biggest order ever placed by any airline in one go. Air India&rsquo;s order even beats American Airlines 2011 order of 460 aircraft &ndash; which was the largest order size up until now.&nbsp; &nbsp;
As per reports, the deal size could be anywhere between 70 to 80 billion dollars and that an order of this size would also come with huge discounts.&nbsp;
But that&rsquo;s not all, Air India also has the option to buy another 370 jets over the next 10 years.&nbsp; Which means, that this deal has the potential to get even bigger.&nbsp;
This decision is important both economically as well geopolitically. From U.S President Joe Biden, to U.K Prime Minister and the French President, all have hailed the deal as a landmark &nbsp;one that would create jobs. In fact the U.S President announced that this would support over 1 million jobs in the U.S.&nbsp;
A reuters report says that months of secret talks were held at St. James court, a luxury hotel, near Buckingham palace in London, before this deal was finally sealed.&nbsp;
Tatas acquired the airline just last year. As the national carrier, Air India had been struggling for several years with a huge debt burden. Air India had not ordered new planes since 2006.&nbsp;
Experts say that while this deal can completely reset the Indian aviation industry and shows Air India&rsquo;s intention to dominate the market and restore the airline to its days of glory , it will also be important to see how well Air India&rsquo;s turnaround plan is executed.&nbsp;

Aviation regulator DGCA on Tuesday issued a show cause notice to Go First for "multiple mistakes" that led to 55 Delhi flight passengers being left behind in a coach at Bangalore airport on Monday and the budget airline has apologised for the incident, saying it happened due to inadvertent oversight in reconciliation.
The airline has been given two weeks time to respond to the show cause notice and based on the response, further action will be initiated.
Go First has derostered the staff involved in the incident pending an inquiry. The airline has issued a show cause notice to the ground handling agency concerned at the Bangalore airport for the lapse.
The incident happened on Monday morning with the passengers who were to board a Delhi flight and later in the day, the Directorate Genral of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had sought a report from the airline about the incident.

In a statement on Tuesday, the regulator said that Go First operated flight G8-116 on Bangalore-Delhi sector leaving behind 55 passengers in the passenger coach at Bangalore airport.
After perusal of the incident report submitted by Go First on Tuesday, the watchdog said that prima-facie it emerges that the airline failed to comply with various norms.
"In the instant case, multiple mistakes such as lack of proper communication, co-ordination, reconciliation and confirmation have resulted in a highly avoidable situation," DGCA said.
It has issued a show cause notice to Accountable Manager/ Chief Operation Officer of Go First as to why enforcement action should not be taken against them for dereliction of their regulatory obligations.
"We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused to the passengers due to an inadvertent oversight in the reconciliation of flight G8 116... passengers were accommodated on alternate airlines to Delhi and onward to other destinations," an airline spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday.
Go First has decided to offer all affected passengers one free ticket for travel on any domestic sector in the next 12 months.
"The airline has initiated an inquiry into the incident and the matter is being investigated. All concerned staff off the roaster till the inquiry is going on," it said, adding that the airline has also issued a show cause notice to the ground handling agency concerned.
The number of staff who have been derostered could not be immediately ascertained.

India has jumped to the 48th position in the global aviation safety ranking by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), according to DGCA officials.
Four years ago, the country was ranked at the 102nd position.

China is at the 49th place, they added.
Under its Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP) Continuous Monitoring Approach, an ICAO Coordinated Validation Mission (ICVM) was undertaken from November 9 to 16.
On Saturday, DGCA chief Arun Kumar told PTI that the regulator has worked tirelessly to upgrade India's safety ranking and the results are there. "Hopefully, we continue to remain vigilant and improve further".
The country's score in terms of effective implementation of key safety elements has improved to 85.49 per cent, the officials said.
On November 16, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the audit was conducted in the areas of legislation, organisation, personal licensing, operations, airworthiness and aerodromes.
"As per the initial reports, the mission was highly successful. India has done extremely well and our scores will see a substantial improvement putting us in the company of nations with best safety standards and oversight systems," it had said in a release.

Aviation consultancy firm CAPA said on Tuesday said that more than 75 planes of Indian carriers are currently grounded due to maintenance and engine-related issues.
These planes, which account for around 10-12 per cent of the Indian fleet, are grounded due to maintenance or engine-related issues. "These will have a significant impact on financials in the second half," CAPA said in its India Mid-Year Outlook 2023 released on Tuesday.
As per the report, more than 75 aircraft are currently grounded, creating serious challenges against the backdrop of an already hostile cost environment and contributing to increased losses.
The capacity has been impacted by serious supply chain issues impacting current and future deliveries, it said, adding that these issues are likely to proliferate in the fiscal starting April 2023 which, in turn, will impact future deliveries, the report said.
Significantly none of the domestic airlines, including two listed companies -- IndiGo and SpiceJet -- have so far made any public announcement on the grounding of the planes.
According to CAPA, delays in future deliveries could also reflect in liquidity issues as the income from sale and lease back financing may be less-than planned.
Delays in aircraft deliveries may also result in increased unit costs for carriers due to the need to extend the leases of older aircraft in the fleet, which have higher maintenance cost and fuel consumption than the new aircraft that would have replaced them, it said.
The report also said that non-supply issues are also expected to emerge next year such as shortages of pilots and engineers.
