Some of the steps being taken by Beijing along the India-China border have been provocative, a top White House official has said while reiterating that the United States is destined to work more closely with New Delhi Kurt Campbell, the Deputy Assistant to the US President and Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific, told a Washington-based think-tank that India is not an ally of the United States and will never be so.
"But it does not mean that we will not be close partners and share many things. That's how we need to understand the role that India will play as a great nation on the global stage.
"We want to encourage that and support that and deepen this relationship, which is already very strong, probably the strongest people-to-people relationship of any country that the United States has on the global stage," he said.
The think tank -- Centre for a New American Security -- in a report said that the India-China border intrusions and clashes have become more frequent and threaten to lead to all-out conflict.
The increased prospect of India-China border hostility has implications for the United States and its Indo-Pacific strategy between the two Asian giants, it said.
The report said that Indian officials believe China is trying to contain India by forcing it to divert more resources into defending simultaneously both its western border with Pakistan and eastern flank with China and by weakening its willingness and ability to challenge Chinese ambitions to dominate the region.
Campbell told the think-tank, "Some of the steps that China has taken along this vast 5,000-mile border had been provocative and deeply concerning to Indian partners and friends." The think tank's report, authored by Lisa Curtis and Derek Grossman, has made several recommendations to help deter and respond to further Chinese aggression along the border with India.

Chain of bank failuers compelled the Biden administration to implement novel, exceptional measures to strengthen public confidence in the banking system. In the past week, the authorities shut down the New York-based Signature Bank on Sunday and the cryptocurrency-focused bank Silvergate Capital Inc. closed its doors.
Some other banks that made huge profits were JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co., Citigroup Inc. and Wells Fargo &amp; Co. but they have not yet disclosed the exact amount they recived in deposits.

The deal could allow the Australian players to feature in the inaugural season of the league which is slated to begin on July 13 in Texas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cricket New South Wales has partnered with America's Major League Cricket (MLC) and Washington DC franchise, which could pave the way for several Australian players, including Steve Smith, to ply their trade in the United States.
Smith has been quoted as saying in recent interviews that he is open to playing in MLC, and that several cricketers in the back end of their careers could also take that route.
"Cricket NSW has launched a historic strategic partnership with Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States that will include collaboration on player development initiatives, touring opportunities and coaching education exchanges.
"To further strengthen ties with the most exciting new frontier of the global T20 landscape, CNSW has also agreed to a high-performance partnership with the Washington D.C. franchise that will be one of six founding teams in the opening season of MLC when it launches on July 13, 2023," said a Cricket NSW statement on Friday.
The six teams which will compete in the 18-day inaugural MLC season will come from major metropolitan areas -- Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Seattle and New York City.
They will boast of multiple global stars on their rosters alongside players based in the US.
"I think the opportunities for all of our (Australian) players are going to be brilliant," CNSW CEO, Lee Germon, was quoted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald on Friday.
"Steve (Smith) absolutely has made no secret that he loves New York, but there are also two or three other players I've spoken to who would love to be able to play cricket in the United States," he added.
"With the global cricket landscape currently undergoing a significant transition, we view the United States as a market with immense growth potential," Germon said in the official statement.
MLC co-founder Sameer Mehta, said, "We're delighted to be able to partner with Cricket New South Wales. As our cricketing ecosystem in the United States continues to grow, adding the support of an organisation with Cricket New South Wales&rsquo;s experience enables us to rapidly accelerate the development of key personnel, including players, coaches and support staff.&rdquo;

Sharing a video on social media, Das said he 'justed wanted bananas for lunch,' not its packaged version. In the video, he lists why serving or selling bananas like that is pointless.
Vir Das goes on to elaborate that entire process involves use of extra people who would have had to cut and package the fruit. He also pointed out that the use of plastic adds to the pollution. The comedian also rued the fact that one would need cutlery to eat the sliced bananas.
Vir Das adds he is amazed as to why somebody would feel the need to package something that has already been packaged by God. His parting shot was that only in American do people think they can do better than God.&nbsp;

 Former US president Donald Trump has coined an India-US friendship slogan in Hindi as part of his efforts to woo the influential Indian-American community before the mid-term elections in November.
“Bharat and America sabse achhe dost” Trump is seen rehearsing and saying in a video released by the Republican Hindu Coalition (RHC). The slogan in English means "India and the United States are best friends".
In the short 30-second video, Trump is seen seated with his supporter Chicago-based businessman Shalabh Kumar from the Republican Hindu Coalition.
The new slogan is inspired by the phenomenal success of the 2016 slogan of Trump in Hindi “Abki Baar Trump Sarkar” which had caught the imagination of the Indian Americans then and had played a key part in his victories in some of the key swing states.
Kumar who has been instrumental in both Trump’s slogans “Abki Baar Trump Sarkar” and “Bharat and America sabse achhe dost” told PTI in an interview this week that he and the RHC plan to run the former president’s latest slogan in the ethnic Indian media to gain Indian-American support and vote for the November 8 mid-term elections.
Political observers and the latest polls indicate that Republicans are most likely to regain the majority in the House of Representatives.

Chauvin had earlier signed a plea deal which allows the two jail sentences to run concurrently. He will also be transferred from a Minnesota state prison to a federal incarceration facility where he would be safer and under less-restrictive conditions, as per experts.

The drought has severely reduced surface and groundwater levels.The soil has become dry, and wildfire risk has increased dangerously.Rivers and lakes are drying up with reduced stream flow and low snow coverage.
With the situation becoming more grave every year, what are authorities doing?
The Mayor of Los Angeles in California promised in 2019 to recycle 100% waste water by the year 2035. A $3.4 billion water recycling facility has also been proposed. The plant is so advanced that it would even make waste water safe to drink, as per reports.
In the city of Las Vegas in Nevada, 99% waste water from indoor use is treated and put into Lake Mead, which supplies 90% of the authority's water supply. The city has also banned "non-functional turf".
In California's San Diego, subsidies are provided to people investing in water-efficiency technologies. The city also has America's largest desalination plant. 8% waste water is also recycled for non-drinking uses like agriculture.
In Phoenix, Arizona, 100% waste water is reportedly recycled for various uses. Treated water is used for farming, energy production, urban irrigation, groundwater replenishment etc.
With concrete action against climate change still missing, India might be staring at a similar situation in the future. IPCC reports have warned of a 5-20% increase in drought conditions in India and surrounding regions by middle of the 21st century.
Staring at such a grim future, it might be time for India to learn from experiences of other places like the US to prepare for prolonged periods of water scarcity.

Joe versus Jeff. Biden versus Bezos. Twitter turned into a battleground for two titans from politics and industry, as the founder of Amazon clashed with the US President.
