Gurugram and Faridabad shut down primary schools in view of rising pollution.&nbsp;

The Gurugram administration has ordered the suspension of classes from nursery to class five till further orders to protect school children from rising pollution in NCR.
Faridabad's Deputy Commissioner Vikram Singh has also ordered the closure of schools till October 12 for children from class one to five from Tuesday.
The AQI in the district has been "extremely dangerous" for last one week. It reached 412 on Monday while the industrial district was ranked fifth among the most polluted cities in the country.
Gurugram District Disaster Management Authority Chairman and DC Nishant Kumar Yadav issued the order in this regard on Monday. Schools have been ordered to continue online studies so that the education of students is not disrupted.
The order will be applicable for all private and government educational institutions of the district from November 7 and will remain effective till further orders.
Yadav said that due to the continuous increase in the air quality index, the situation has reached GRAP IV stage.
Earlier, the Haryana government had asked the deputy commissioners in the NCR to assess the situation in their districts and take a call on closing schools. For the last few days, the AQI has turned 'severe' in some districts, including Gurugram.
Pollution levels in Delhi-NCR on Monday morning were recorded around seven to eight times above the government-prescribed safe limit as a toxic haze persisted over the region for the seventh consecutive day.

Air pollution: Delhi govt imposes temporary ban on plying of BS-III petrol, BS-IV diesel vehicles

The national capital's 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) stood at 434 at 4 pm on Monday, worsening from 371 on Sunday.

The Delhi government has decided to impose a temporary ban on plying of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers in the national capital from Tuesday in view of the worsening air quality.
Delhi's air quality worsened to the severe category on Monday owning to unfavourable meteorological conditions -- clam winds and low temperatures -- prompting the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to direct all NCR states to implement anti-pollution curbs with greater vigour.
"The ban on BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles will kick in from Tuesday since the air quality has deteriorated in the severe category. We are monitoring the situation along with the Environment department. For now, the ban is likely to be in place till Friday. If the air quality improves, the ban could be lifted before Friday," said a senior Transport department official.
The national capital's 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) stood at 434 at 4 pm on Monday, worsening from 371 on Sunday.
An AQI between 201 and 300 is considered 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.

With air pollution in Delhi-NCR ameliorating, the Centre's air quality panel on Wednesday directed authorities to lift the curbs imposed in Delhi-NCR under stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan, including a ban on non-essential construction and demolition work. Delhi's 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) stood at 343 at 4 pm, improving from 385 on Tuesday. An AQI between 201 and 300 is considered 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.
"The forecast by the India Meteorological Department and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology does not suggest that the AQI would slip into the &ldquo;severe&rdquo; category in the coming days," the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) said in an order.
"It is therefore, felt that it is advisable to relax the stringent restrictions and roll back Stage-III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) with immediate effect in the entire national capital region (NCR)," the order read.

The survey also found that 80 per cent of the surveyed families have at least one member who is experiencing some kind of respiratory problem due to air pollution.

The survey also found that 80 per cent of the surveyed families have at least one member who is experiencing some kind of respiratory problem due to air pollution.

Four out of every five families in Delhi-NCR claimed to have experienced pollution-related ailments in the last few weeks, according to a survey.
Meanwhile, 18 per cent of the total 19,000 people surveyed by LocalCircles have already visited a doctor.
The survey also found that 80 per cent of the surveyed families have at least one member who is experiencing some kind of respiratory problem due to air pollution.
The responses were sought from the residents of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad with 63 per cent of respondents being male.
"Four in five Delhi-NCR (National Capital Region) families surveyed have someone experiencing pollution-related ailments: 18 per cent have already visited a doctor or a hospital," the survey mentioned.
Answering the question on the nature of the ailment, 80 per cent families said their members are "facing multiple issues due to the pollution", while 7 per cent denied having any issue at all due to the pollution.

Meanwhile, 13 per cent were said to be unaffected by air pollution as they are not living in Delhi-NCR at the time.
In effect, to avoid the impact of air pollution, some have temporarily moved out of the national capital region, while the majority of those remaining are paying a price &ndash; court ill health.
When a similar question was asked five days after Diwali, 70 per cent citizens had complained that someone in their family was experiencing the same pollution-related illness.
This number has risen by 10 per cent in a matter of five days, during which 13 per cent of the respondents have left Delhi-NCR temporarily.

The descriptors used to describe Delhi’s pollution don’t change, because the pollution menace unfortunately, also does not change. Why does Delhi then face such extreme pollution, that renders it a hazard for the close to 2.9 crore people living in and around it? It’s an amalgamation of several different factors that our National Capital unfortunately just has to deal with. And all of these reasons collectively add to the problem of pollution in the capital around a 2-month window of toxic AQI.  

This pollution while bad for all living in the city, affects people of different age, gender and social strata very differently. Numerous studies have found the exacerbated effect that pollution has on women and children, and this effect is worsened particularly for those coming from a marginalised background. Lack of access to resources also determines how the pollution phenomenon affects people.

A new study suggests that long-term air pollution exposure is linked to women gaining weight.&nbsp;

According to a recent study conducted by the University of Michigan, long-term air pollution exposure may lead to obesity in women, particularly in their 40s and 50s.
For the study, the team analysed 1,654 women aged 40 and above for a period of 8 years. Researchers found that exposure to air pollution is linked to higher body fat, higher proportion fat and lower lean fat among midlife women.
However, high levels of physical activity can lower the effect. Study authors also concluded that these findings can't be generalised to men or women in other age groups.

Following the dreadful demolition of the Supertech Twin Towers in Uttar Pradesh's Noida, authorities monitored the air quality index (AQI) of surrounding areas to analyse the harmful effects of the massive dust cloud released by the explosion.
With the demolition in Noida's Sector 93A creating around 80,000 tonnes of debris, the Noida Authority said that air quality in sectors 91, 125, 62, 1, and 116 were monitored.
Officials said that even after the demolition, AQI and PM 10 levels remained within acceptable limits, and there was no major change.
Doctors had warned that the huge clouds of dust released from the explosive demolition might cause health problems, especially for those suffering from respiratory diseases.
Doctors said most dust particles have a diameter of 5 microns or less, and can remain suspended in the air for a few days in the absence of strong winds and rain. Massive dust pollution can lead to itching in the eyes, nose and skin; coughing; sneezing; breathing difficulty; lung infection; nasal congestion; asthmatic attacks and aggravate heart problems.

India saw over 23.5 lakh premature deaths due to pollution of all types -- including 16.7 lakh fatalities caused by air pollution -- in 2019, the highest among all countries globally, according to a new study published in The Lancet Planetary Health journal.
The majority of air pollution related deaths -- 9.8 lakh -- in India were caused by ambient PM2.5 pollution -- tiny pollution particles in the air that are two and one half microns or less in width, the researchers said.
Another 6.1 lakh were due to household air pollution, they said.
According to the study, burning of biomass in households was the single largest cause of air pollution deaths in India, followed by coal combustion and crop burning.
Globally, pollution of any kind was responsible for nine million deaths in 2019 -- equivalent to one in six deaths worldwide.
Air pollution -- both household and ambient -- was responsible for the greatest number of deaths at 6.67 million worldwide.
