TikTok was the most downloaded app of 2021, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp also make top 10

According to a report by Apptopia, TikTok was the most downloaded app worldwide in 2021, with 656 million downloads. The list takes into account download numbers from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Apptopia has provided an overall top downloads list, and category-wise lists as well.

In the overall list, TikTok is followed by Instagram with 545 million downloads, Facebook with 416 million, and WhatsApp with 395 million, all owned by Meta. Messaging app Telegram makes up the top 5 with 329 million downloads. Snapchat, Zoom, Messenger, CapCut, and Spotify make up the top 10.

Meanwhile, Subway Surfers remains the most downloaded game of 2021, with 191 million downloads. Massively multiplayer game Roblox came second with 182 million downloads. Bridge Race, Garena Free Fire, and Among Us make up the top 5. Interestingly, neither PUBG Mobile nor Call of Duty Mobile make it to the top 10.

In the Entertainment category, Netflix remained king with 173 million downloads, while YouTube was second with 166 million downloads. Google Play Games, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video made up the top 5, followed by YouTube Kids, HBO Max, Twitch, Hotstar, and Pluto TV.

In the Shopping apps category, Shopee got the number 1 slot with 203 million downloads, while Shein got second with 190 million downloads. Meesho, Amazon, and Flipkart make up the top 5, followed by AliExpress, Wish, Pinduoduo, Lazada, and Alibaba.
