Google Pixel Fold 2 prototype leak unveils radical design changes

The leaked prototype of Google's Pixel Fold 2 reveals radical design changes, including a prominent camera bump, a Tensor G4 chip paired with 16GB of RAM, and a taller aspect ratio akin to the OnePlus Open.

Google Pixel Fold 2 prototype leak unveils radical design changes

The Pixel Fold 2 is in the news because an early image of its prototype was leaked by Android Authority.

The newly leaked images confirm that the Pixel Fold 2 is adopting a different camera bump.

Amidst these revelations, the details surrounding Google's second foldable phone are starting to surface, offering a glimpse into the tech giant's cutting-edge innovations.

New Camera Island

The most striking feature of the Pixel Fold 2 prototype is its overhauled camera bump, replacing the bar seen in the original Pixel Fold with a rounded rectangle protruding from the top-left corner.

This revamped design closely resembles the camera array showcased in the leaked Pixel 9 series, signalling a potential unification in the design language across Google's upcoming devices.

Hardware and Features

Reportedly, the Pixel Fold 2 is set to skip a processor generation in favour of the yet-to-be-revealed Tensor G4 chip, coupled with a remarkable 16 GB of RAM, thus setting new standards for Pixel phones.

The prototype also suggests a much taller aspect ratio similar to the OnePlus Open, indicating a departure from the original Pixel Fold's small, super-wide form factor.

New Hinge

Significant changes are also evident in the hinge, which now bears striking similarities to the one used by OnePlus.

Notably, Google has opted for a more rounded form factor, in contrast to the squared-off designs favoured by other manufacturers.

Additionally, the use of matte materials for the hinge aims to conceal its appearance when the phone is unfolded, reflecting Google's commitment to both form and function.

Potential Launch Timeline

With the Pixel Fold 2 still in its prototype phase, the exact details remain subject to change.

However, with the reported use of the Tensor G4 chip and design details reminiscent of the Pixel 9 series, it seems plausible that the Pixel Fold 2 may gear up for a much-anticipated reveal as part of Google's upcoming lineup, potentially being unveiled at Google I/O 2024.
