Apple set to unveil iOS 18 at WWDC 2024: AI enhancements, RCS support, and visual overhaul expected

Apple is currently gearing up for its next big event of the year, the WWDC 2024 which is set to take place next month. The iPhone maker is expected to unveil iOS 18 with a host of AI features and enhancements.

Ahead of the event, here’s all we know about iOS 18, and features and upgrades it is expected to bring with its launch.

iOS 18 will have AI Enhancements

Apple CEO Tim Cook has emphasized that iOS 18 will include several new AI features. AppleInsider reports that these improvements will focus on Siri, Apple's voice assistant, enhancing its ability to analyze and summarize texts within the Messages app. Bloomberg also notes that Siri could soon offer auto-complete for texts, handle complex queries, and feature improved integration with the Shortcuts app.

Another notable addition is the "Intelligent Search" feature in Safari, which uses Apple’s in-house developed AI model, Ajax. This model will alert users before accessing data from Safari and Messages. It is designed to run locally on devices for basic queries and connect to cloud servers for more complex tasks.

Apple iOS 18 Will Focus on On-Device AI

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is focusing on on-device AI to boost performance and privacy. This could include Apple's own chatbot, possibly integrating technology from OpenAI. In-house AI will also enhance other iPhone apps like Notes, which will offer generative suggestions, and Photos, with features such as background manipulation.

iOS 18 Will Have RCS Support

Earlier this year, Apple announced that iOS 18 would include RCS support, enabling iPhone users to communicate seamlessly with Android users, sharing high-quality videos and more.

Other iOS 18 Features

The update is also expected to introduce new customization options for the home screen, such as arranging icons and creating blank spaces. New accessibility features like Adaptive Voice Shortcuts and updated apps are also anticipated.

Visual Overhaul and Design Influence

Rumors suggest that iOS 18 might draw inspiration from visionOS, with possible changes like circular home screen icons and a visual overhaul of the user interface. This redesign could extend to various elements of the operating system, including a revamped Camera app interface.

iOS 18 Device Compatibility

Apple has indicated that iOS 18 will be compatible with devices launched after the iPhone 11. This includes a wide range of models from the iPhone 11 up to the latest iPhone SE (3rd gen).
