At Computex 2024, Intel Corporation unveiled a range of new technologies designed to propel advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), server processing, and AI acceleration. This article details the key features and specifications of these latest announcements, including the Lunar Lake processor for AI PCs, the Xeon 6 server processor, and the Gaudi 3 AI accelerator.

Intel Unveiled Lunar Lake Processors for AI PCs

Intel unveiled the Lunar Lake architecture, the foundation for its next-generation processors designed specifically for AI PCs. Lunar Lake processors boast significant performance and efficiency improvements over previous generations.

      • Hybrid Core Architecture:
Lunar Lake features a sophisticated 8-core design that combines high-performance Lion Cove P-cores with efficient Skymont E-cores. This approach allows the processor to dynamically allocate tasks based on their requirements.
Lion Cove P-cores boast a new microarchitecture for a 14% improvement in instructions per clock (IPC) over previous generations, ideal for demanding applications. Skymont E-cores, on the other hand, deliver a significant efficiency boost, achieving a 38% improvement in integer performance and a remarkable 68% improvement in floating-point tasks compared to prior E-cores. This combination allows Lunar Lake to deliver both powerful performance and extended battery life.
      • Enhanced Neural Processing Unit (NPU):
The integrated NPU 4 is a powerhouse for AI workloads. It offers a massive 4.36x improvement in performance over previous generations, reaching a peak of 48 TOPS. This is achieved through a combination of factors, including a higher clock rate of 1.95 GHz, 12K Multiply-Accumulate Units (MACs), and 6 Neural Compute Engines. Additionally, the NPU 4 boasts 12x higher vector performance, 4x higher AI TOPS, and 2x higher memory bandwidth compared to its predecessors.
      • Xe2 Graphics for AI and Gaming:
The all-new Xe2 Graphics architecture empowers Lunar Lake for both professional and entertainment purposes. It delivers up to 67 TOPS of AI performance, making it a valuable asset for AI-powered applications. Gamers will also appreciate the significant improvements in graphics performance promised by Xe2. While specific details haven't been revealed, Intel claims it surpasses previous generations by a substantial margin.
      • On-package LPDDR5X Memory:
Lunar Lake processors come with a revolutionary design choice: 16GB or 32GB of LPDDR5X memory integrated directly onto the package. This significantly reduces latency and power consumption by minimizing data transfer distances between processor and memory. While it eliminates post-purchase memory upgrades, the benefit for performance and efficiency is undeniable.
      • Improved Battery Life:
By combining efficient cores, a next-generation NPU, and on-package memory, Lunar Lake processors are designed to deliver up to 60% better battery life compared to previous generations. This is a significant leap forward for AI PCs, allowing users to work and create for extended periods without needing to recharge.
      • Advanced Connectivity:
Lunar Lake stays at the forefront of connectivity with support for the latest standards. This includes Wi-Fi 7, offering faster wireless speeds and improved reliability. Bluetooth 5.4 ensures seamless connections to peripherals. PCIe Gen5 provides high-bandwidth communication for storage and other devices, while Thunderbolt 4 allows for ultra-fast data transfer and connection to high-resolution displays.

Intel Announces Xeon 6 Server Processors

The new Xeon 6 server processors take on demanding workloads with a significant core increase.

Xeon 6 processors boast a staggering number of cores – up to 144. These efficient cores are designed to deliver exceptional performance for tasks like data analysis and scientific computing. Compared to prior Xeon processors, this translates to a 4.2x improvement in overall performance and a 2.6x improvement in performance per watt. This means Xeon 6 processors can handle more tasks while consuming less power.

Intel Announces Gaudi 3 AI Accelerator

The Gaudi 3 AI accelerator is designed to tackle demanding AI workloads in data centers.

According to Intel, the Gaudi 3 offers a compelling alternative to competitor solutions. It delivers similar levels of performance at a lower price point, making it an attractive option for businesses seeking to leverage AI capabilities without breaking the bank. Specific details regarding performance benchmarks and pricing haven't been disclosed yet.

      Availability

Lunar Lake processors are expected to launch in Q3 2024 with over 80 different AI PC designs planned from more than 20 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Intel also announced plans to ship over 40 million AI PC processors in 2024. Specific launch dates and configurations for the Xeon 6 server processors and the Gaudi 3 AI accelerator have not yet been announced.
