CES 2022: Sony confirms PlayStation VR2, shows off Horizon exclusive

Sony confirmed the name of its next-generation VR headset at their CES 2022 presentation, the successor to the PlayStation VR, which will be called the PlayStation VR2.

No footage or imagery of the device was shown off, so we don’t yet know what the headset will look like. Sony has, however, confirmed many of the headset’s technical specifications. We know that the PSVR2 headset will support haptic feedback, eye tracking, 4K HDR, 90Hz and 120Hz frames rates, foveated rendering, and a 110-degree field of view. The headset will also connect to the PS5 with a USB-C cable.

Sony also showed off the new controllers for the PSVR2 back in March, which are now named Sense controllers. These break from the PSVR’s wand-shaped Move controllers and offer an orb-shaped, flowy design, and include the same adaptive trigger technology found in the DualSense PS5 controller.

Horizon Call of the Mountain revealed

Sony also confirmed the first exclusive game for the PlayStation VR2, set in the Horizon franchise. Horizon: Call of the Mountain will be a PSVR2 exclusive, following Horizon: Forbidden West, which is expected to release next month for PS4 and PS5. Sony did not release many details about the gameplay or features, but a very short pre-rendered clip was shown.

There is no announced release date for either the PSVR 2 or Horizon: Call of the Mountain yet.
