BIS rolls out new standards for USB Type-C charging ports

The Indian government is working to adopt a universal charger regulation similar to the European Union's. This regulation will require devices such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets to use a Type C port for charging and data transfer.

The Department of Consumer Affairs is considering mandating two types of common charging ports, one for mobile devices and tablets, and another for wearables like smartwatches.

The Bureau of Indian Standards has established quality standards for USB Type C charging ports, and the implementation of these standards will be in line with the EU's timeline, with a rollout planned for December 2024.

The goal of this regulation is to improve the convenience of consumers and reduce electronic waste.
