Security forces arrested five people, including four militants belonging to three banned outfits, from several districts of Manipur for their alleged involvement in extortion activities, police said on Thursday.
All the arrests were made on Wednesday.
During a frisking and checking exercise at Ngaikhong Khunou check point in Bishnupur district, an active cadre of the proscribed Peoples' Liberation Army and his associate, who is not a member of the organisation, were apprehended for allegedly being involved in extortion activities, an officer said.
They were accused of demanding money from contractors, businessmen and the general public in Imphal and Bishnupur districts, he said.
One member of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) was arrested from Heirol Part 2 in Thoubal district for his alleged role in extortion, threatening people and recruiting cadres for the outfit, the officer said.
One active cadre of the outlawed Prepak (Pro) was apprehended from his residential locality at Taothong Khunou in Imphal West district. He was also involved in "extortion" activities, the police said.
Another member of the banned KCP (PWG) was arrested from Kairang Chingya in Imphal East district, the officer said.
Meanwhile, security forces recovered 26 firearms, nine explosives and other ammunition during separate operations in Churachandpur and Thoubal districts on Wednesday, another police officer said.
Security forces have been conducting search operations in Manipur since ethnic violence broke out two years ago.
More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023.
The Centre had on February 13 imposed the President&rsquo;s rule in Manipur after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned.
The state assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation.

ISRO and NASA successfully launch $1.5 billion NISAR satellite aboard GSLV F-16, marking their first joint Earth observation mission into Sun Synchronous Polar Orbit.

India and the US on Wednesday marked their maiden space collaboration with the successful flight of a GSLV rocket that placed an earth observation satellite, jointly developed by ISRO and NASA, in a precise orbit in what was described as an "outstanding success" by the Indian space agency.
ISRO's GSLV F-16 injected NISAR--NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite, into the intended Sun Synchronous Polar Orbit (SSPO), after a flight of about 19 minutes and around 745 km, marking the culmination of a decade-long cooperation between the top two space agencies of the world.
"I am extremely happy to announce that GSLV F-16 successfully injected the NISAR satellite into intended orbit," ISRO Chairman V Narayanan said about the 102nd launch from here.
Reportedly, Wednesday's mission was the world's most expensive at an estimated USD 1.5 bn. Also, this was the first GSLV mission to the SSPO and till date, all the GSLV missions have been going to Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
"And being the SSPO mission, several analyses and studies were carried out to make this mission a grand success." Cryogenic upper stage corrections and a host of mission simulations were carried out very systematically and meticulously, Narayanan added.
"All the vehicle system performances were quite normal as expected and as predicted. Today, we achieved the intended orbit. Actually we have got an orbit with a dispersion (deviation from desired orbit) of less than 3 km as against the permissible level of 20 km...all parameters are as expected," he said.
"NISAR is an all-weather day and night imaging satellite that will scan the entire earth at a 12 day interval. The satellite integrates ISRO's S-band synthetic aperture radar with NASA's L-band SAR payload and 12 metre unfurlable antenna to become a first of its kind dual frequency SAR satellite," Narayanan, also Secretary, Department of Space, added.
Deputy Associate Administrator at NASA, Casey Swails said it was an incredible decade culminating in this moment from the technical collaborations, the cultural understandings, getting to know each other building that team across continents, time zones.
"This mission is truly a pathfinder, not just in regards to our technical collaborations because those are truly incredible but earth science mission is one of a kind which really shows the world what the two nations can do. But more than that it is really a pathfinder for the relationship building across our two nations, across India and the United States building upon decades of collaborations that already existed," she added.
Earlier, at the end of the 27.30 hour countdown, the 51.7 metre tall launch vehicle carrying the 2,393 kg satellite majestically lifted-off from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, here, situated about 135 km east of Chennai at a prefixed time of 5.40 pm.
Post the separation from the rocket, the scientists would embark on commissioning the satellite which would take "several days" to be positioned and meet the mission objectives.
According to ISRO, the S-band Radar system, data handling and high-speed downlink system, the spacecraft and the launch system are developed by the national space agency. The L-band Radar system, high speed downlink system, the Solid State Recorder, GPS receiver, the 9m Boom hoisting the 12m reflector are delivered by US-based National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA).
"Further, ISRO is responsible for the satellite commanding and operations. NASA will provide the orbit maneuver plan and RADAR operations plan. NISAR mission will be aided with ground station support of both ISRO and NASA for downloading of the acquired images, which after the necessary processing will be disseminated to the user community," it said.
The data acquired through S-band and L-band SAR from a single platform will help the scientists to understand the changes happening to Earth.
According to ISRO, the NISAR mission's primary objectives are to study land and ice deformation, land ecosystems, and oceanic regions in areas of common interest to the US and Indian scientific communities.
The mission would help in measuring the woody biomass, track changes in the extent of active crops, understand the changes in wetlands extent among others.
The mission life of NISAR is 5 year.
NASA said the data from NISAR mission would provide critical insights to help governments and decision-makers plan for natural and human-caused hazards. NISAR can help with hazard-monitoring efforts and potentially give decision- makers more time to prepare for a possible disaster.
The RADAR satellite would provide a 3D view of the Earth's land and ice and through its ability to see through clouds and light rain, day and night, the satellite would enable data users to continuously monitor earthquake and landslide prone areas and determine how quickly glaciers and ice sheets are changing.
The data collected from the satellite would also offer an 'unprecedented coverage of Antarctica, an information that would help with studying how the continent's ice sheet changes over time.
The NISAR mission would help the two space agencies to monitor ecosystems around the world and the L band penetrates deep into forest canopies, providing insights into forest structure, while the S-band radar is monitoring crops.

While addressing the press conference here at Punjab Bhawan, on Tuesday, Mr. Aman Arora informed that the state government has also decided to name the Bhawanigarh-Sunam-Bhikhi-Kotshamir road as &ldquo;Shaheed Udham Singh Marg&rdquo;. The Punjab Government would organise a state-level function at Sunam, the birthplace of Shaheed Udham Singh, to commemorate the martyrdom day of the legendary Indian revolutionary freedom fighter. AAP National Convener Sh. Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann will officially name the road after Shaheed Udham Singh on July 31st during the function.

Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government has completed the cleaning of the state's drainage systems and strengthened embankments to tackle any kind of flood-like situation, stated Punjab Water Resources Minister Sh. Barinder Kumar Goyal while addressing media persons here at Punjab Bhawan today.
After reviewing the arrangements made by the Water Resources Department to deal with any potential floods during the high level meeting, Sh. Goyal informed the journalists that the state government has completed 1220 projects worth Rs.276 crore to tackle potential flood situations. These projects include river revetment work, installation of studs, strengthening operations and desilting/cleaning of drains. He said that additionally, 600 check dams have been constructed with 1104 and more check dams under construction. Besides this, 3905 soak pits are being created, over 53,400 bamboo saplings have been planted and 226 kilometers of vetiver grass has been cultivated. &nbsp; The Cabinet Minister informed that out of the 850 drains, 601 drains required cleaning this year, which has been completed. He said that so far, 4766 kilometers of drains have been cleaned.
Sh. Goyal said that the department has completed drain desilting/cleaning work using departmental machinery, resulting in 65% cost savings compared to contractor work. He mentioned that the department currently possesses 15 machines, with 3 additional machines soon to be added to the departmental fleet.&nbsp;
The Water Resources Minister stated that departmental machinery is currently conducting desilting/cleaning operations at 110 locations across Sri Muktsar Sahib, Faridkot, Fazilka, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Ropar and Sri Anandpur Sahib.&nbsp;
He said that locations where embankments had breached during previous years have been specially reinforced and sand bags have been strategically placed at 94 vulnerable locations across the state as a precautionary measure.
He informed that Water Resources Department officials have been instructed to maintain continuous monitoring in their respective areas and submit daily reports to headquarters while ensuring they do not leave their headquarters.
The Water Resources Minister also directed officials of Local Government and Rural Development Departments and Deputy Commissioners to ensure cleaning of drains and channels passing through their jurisdictions and maintain continuous surveillance.
He informed that the department has implemented several strategic measures to handle emergency situations, including the procurement of 8.76 lakh sand bags strategically positioned at vulnerable locations. Of these, 3.24 lakh bags have been filled and kept ready. He stated that for rapid response during emergencies, the locations of sand bags have been uploaded onto the Geographic Information System (GIS). He mentioned that for the first time, the department has purchased 10,300 jumbo bags to enable quick breach filling.
Providing information about water levels in dams, the Cabinet Minister said that all major dams are within safe limits with no cause for concern. He said that Bhakra Dam currently stands at 1618.38 feet, which corresponds to the average requirement of the past 20 years. He explained that the Bhakra Dam, with a maximum capacity of 1680 feet, is currently 47 feet below the 2023 flood level. Similarly, Pong Dam, with a maximum capacity of 1390 feet, stands at 1346.15 feet, which is 30.78 feet lower than the 2023 flood level. He stated that Ranjit Sagar Dam, with a maximum capacity of 1731.55 feet, currently stands at 1664.72 feet, which is 5.49 feet below the 20-year average and 54 feet below the 2023 flood year level.
The Cabinet Minister stressed that controlled water levels will significantly benefit irrigation as more agricultural areas are being brought under canal irrigation systems.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday categorically said there was no third-party intervention in bringing about a ceasefire with Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, asserting that the halting of the military action was also not linked to trade as claimed by US President Donald Trump.
Intervening in the special discussion on Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the US President did not have any phone calls between April 22, when the Pahalgam terror attack took place, and June 16.
The Opposition has been attacking the government on claims made by Trump on mediation in halting hostilities between India and Pakistan by using the threat of trade.
He said India will not tolerate any cross-border terrorism and has responded to Pakistan by carrying out Operation Sindoor and will continue to do so.
Noting that the Pahalgam terror attack was absolutely unacceptable, he said a red line was crossed by Pakistan, and there had to be accountability and justice.
"Blood and water will not flow together," he said, providing reasons for India's decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan.
Jaishankar said the Modi government has corrected the wrongs of Nehru's policies by suspending the Treaty. The Treaty signed by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was not to buy peace, but for appeasement, he added.
The External Affairs Minister said terrorism is now on the global agenda only because of the efforts of the Modi government.
He said India exerted huge pressure on Pakistan through the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) process and also despite not being a member of the UN Security Council, India was able to get UN recognition that The Resistance Front (TRF) is a proxy of Pakistan-based LeT.
The TRF had claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam attack.
"When the Pahalgam attack happened on April 22, it was a shocking attack for a variety of reasons...The manner in which people were killed in front of their families, the fact that their faith was asked before killing them, the intent of destroying the economy of Jammu and Kashmir, which had returned to normalcy and prosperity after the end of Article 370. All of this angered the country," he said.
The Minister said there was grief and shock across the world. There was solidarity and sympathy.
"But the question was, what after that? And the answers were two. One, such an attack was absolutely unacceptable. It crossed our red line. There had to be severe consequences.
&ldquo;And two, there had to be accountability and justice. There had to be accountability of the perpetrators, and they and their supporters had to be brought to justice. Now, the first clear message, of India's anger, of our resolve, of our determination, was the decision taken by the Cabinet Committee on Security immediately the day after, from April 23," he said.
In his nearly hour-long speech, Jaishankar informed that on May 9, US Vice President J D Vance informed Prime Minister Modi that Pakistan was planning a huge attack on India.
To this, Prime Minister Modi told Vance that India's response would be appropriate, he said.
Pakistan attacked, and India gave a fitting and appropriate response, Jaishankar told the House.
The Minister also India sent a clear message that it is not open to any mediation and will not be deterred by nuclear blackmail.
Jaishankar said Operation Sindoor also did a global service as India reduced to dust terror infrastructure in Pakistan, including in Bahawalpur and Muridke.
He also chided certain opposition party leaders for mocking India's military action against Pakistan, if they have any doubts, they should watch videos of funerals of terrorists in Pakistan and destruction of airfields in the neighbouring country.
He said Opposition Sindoor was a well-considered and thoughtful response to the barbaric Pahalgam attack and it has now become the basis of a new policy.
He emphasised India will keep responding to each terror attack in the same way.
Certain opposition party members had raised the issue of Jaishankar's recent visit to China.
To this, the Minister said he visited China to discuss terrorism, de-escalation, and trade restrictions.
"I had no secret meeting," he said, in a veiled attack on senior Congress party leadership.
Relations with China will be developed on mutual interest, mutual sensitivity and mutual respect, he added.
The Minister also thanked the multi-party parliamentary delegation to various countries post Operation Sindoor, delegations to various countries, says they have done great national service.

While announcing the revival of traditional rural sports in Punjab that were fading due to legal restrictions, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann stated today that the state government will remove all legal hurdles to promote and preserve the state&rsquo;s glorious sports heritage.
Addressing the gathering in a function organised by Sports lovers to felicitate &nbsp;a massive gathering of traditional sports lovers, the Chief Minister said that bullock cart races are not just a source of entertainment but represent the glorious cultural heritage of rural Punjab. He said such races have been held in Punjab since ancient times and served as a living connection to our traditions and cultural identity. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru, also practiced farming with bullocks during his time in Kartarpur Sahib.
The Chief Minister said that the ban on bullock cart races not only disheartened lovers of traditional sports, but also dealt a blow to our heritage. He further added that there had been growing demand from Punjabis to bring a new law so that these traditional games can be revived. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that on July 11, 2025, the historic &lsquo;Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2025&rsquo; was passed unanimously in the Punjab Assembly.
The Chief Minister &nbsp;envisioned that &nbsp;this law will not only help in preserving indigenous animal breeds in Punjab but also pave the way for resuming bullock cart races. He said that the law now awaits the consent of the President of India, after which the races can be officially conducted again. Speaking about the new legislation, Bhagwant Singh Mann explained that its primary objective is to ensure safety measures for animals participating in sports, including veterinary supervision, safety standards, registration and documentation, and penalties for violations&mdash;so that no cruelty is inflicted upon voiceless animals.
The CM also announced that the government will explore possibilities of reviving pigeon flying competitions as well. Referring to the sports festival held at Kila Raipur village, he said that the games which began in 1933 are popularly known as &ldquo;Mini Olympics&rdquo; or &ldquo;Rural Olympics&rdquo;. Bhagwant Singh Mann said these games have received international recognition, having been covered by BBC, Discovery Channel, and others adding that even Presidents of India have attended these games in the past.
Thanking the public for their overwhelming support in the government&rsquo;s war against drugs, the Chief Minister emphasized that drug abuse is not limited to one house or district, but affects the entire state. He said many young people in Punjab have fallen prey to drugs adding those who laid the pyres &nbsp;of youth &nbsp;are the real enemies of society and they will not be spared at any cost. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that those affluent leaders who were behind the genocide of youth have already been put behind the bars adding that the campaign to demolish the houses of drug smugglers with bulldozers will continue in coming days too.
The Chief Minister questioned Captain Amarinder Singh for showing concern over the human rights of the kingpin of the entire drug trade currently lodged in Nabha jail, asking why such concern was never shown for the people of Punjab. He implied that this has exposed the real face of these leaders who have spread and patronised drug trade across the state. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that Captain&rsquo;s nephew started drug trade in Akali regime when he was Minister and it bloomed with the former Congress leader, now in BJP became the Chief Minister.
Talking about irrigation, the Chief Minister shared that when he assumed office, only 21% of agricultural land across state was irrigated using canal water, but today that figure has increased to 63%. He said that due to the government&rsquo;s effective efforts, for the first time in history, canal and river water is reaching the tail-end villages of the state. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the Punjab government is duty bound to save the water of the state and no stone is being left unturned for it.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that uninterrupted electricity is being provided for paddy cultivation, and for the first time, due to surplus water availability, farmers are switching off their tube wells. He &nbsp;stated that Punjab Government has made history by purchasing the privately-owned Govindwal Power Plant adding that this is the first time a government has bought a private power plant, reversing the past trend where governments sold public assets to their cronies at throwaway prices. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that as per its duty, the state government has renamed the plant after the third Sikh Guru, Guru Amar Das Ji.

In a decisive move to strengthen Punjab&rsquo;s healthcare infrastructure as per the vision of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh on Tuesday issued strict directives to ensure uninterrupted oxygen supply and power backup in all critical care units, including ICUs, Operation Theatres (OTs), and emergency wards across all government health facilities in the state.
Presiding over a high-level meeting with Civil Surgeons from all districts, Dr Balbir Singh emphasised the need for 24x7 oxygen availability, functional UPS systems, and fully operational generator sets to prevent any disruption in life-saving medical services.
The Health Minister also issued stringent directives regarding medicine supply, instructing Civil Surgeons to maintain at least one month's buffer stock of all 368 types of essential medicines and warned against any shortage of essential medicines. "No patient should be prescribed any medicines from outside the hospital," he declared, while reiterating that the CM Bhagwant Singh Mann led government&rsquo;s commitment to ensure free and accessible healthcare.
He further said that Senior Medical Officers (SMOs) have been empowered to purchase any non-essential medicine as per their requirement, warning that strict disciplinary action would be taken against any non-complying medical officer. To bolster the medicine dispensing system and overall patient experience, Civil Surgeons and SMOs were also directed to daily visit OPDs and collect patient feedback.
To further enhance patient satisfaction, Dr Balbir Singh directed Civil Surgeons to ensure that Outpatient Department (OPD) services must be delivered within an hour of the registration.
In another move to enhance critical care capabilities, Dr Balbir Singh announced that every doctor and paramedic, including staff nurses, will undergo training in critical care and advanced life support. He also tasked each Civil Surgeon with submitting their district's health status in comparison to the Millennium Development Goals, enabling the department to set targets for better progress.

The Supreme Court questioned Justice Yashwant Varma&rsquo;s conduct in the cash row case, reserving its order on his plea challenging the in-house inquiry panel's misconduct findings and impeachment recommendation.

Observing that Justice Yashwant Varma's conduct does not inspire confidence, the Supreme Court on Wednesday posed sharp questions to the judge seeking invalidation of a report by an in-house inquiry panel which found him guilty of misconduct in the cash discovery row.
The top court asked Justice Varma why did he appear before the in-house inquiry committee and not challenge it then and there.
It told Justice Varma that he should have come earlier to the apex court against the in-house inquiry panel's report.
A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and AG Masih said if the Chief Justice of India has material to believe that there is misconduct by a judge then he can inform the president and the prime minister.
"Whether to proceed or not proceed is a political decision. But judiciary has to send a message to the society that process has been followed," the bench observed.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Justice Varma, submitted that the in-house inquiry panel's recommendation for his removal is unconstitutional.
Sibal told the court that recommendation of proceedings for removal in this manner would set a dangerous precedent.
He said Justice Varma did not approach earlier as tape was released and his reputation was already damaged.
The top court also pulled advocate Mathews J. Nedumpara seeking registration of an FIR against Justice Varma.
During the hearing, Justice Dipankar Datta questioned Nedumpara on whether he had even approached the police with a formal complaint before seeking the registration of an FIR.
The top court reserved its order on Justice Varma&rsquo;s petition challenging the in-house inquiry procedure and the Chief Justice of India&rsquo;s recommendation for his removal.
It also reserved its order on a separate petition filed by Nedumpara seeking registration of an FIR.
Justice Varma has also sought quashing of the May 8 recommendation by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, urging Parliament to initiate impeachment proceedings against him.
In his petition, Justice Varma submitted that the inquiry "reversed the burden of proof", requiring him to investigate and disprove the charges levelled against him.
Alleging that the panel's findings were based on a preconceived narrative, Justice Varma said the inquiry timelines were driven solely by the urge to conclude proceedings swiftly, even at the expense of "procedural fairness".
The petition contended that the inquiry panel drew adverse findings without affording him a full and fair hearing.
A report of the inquiry panel probing the incident had said that Justice Varma and his family members had covert or active control over the store room where a huge cache of half-burnt cash was found following a fire incident, proving his misconduct which is serious enough to seek his removal.
The three-judge panel headed by Chief Justice Sheel Nagu of the Punjab and Haryana High Court conducted the inquiry for 10 days, examined 55 witnesses and visited the scene of the accidental fire that started at around 11.35 pm on March 14 at the official residence of Justice Varma, then a sitting judge of the Delhi High Court and now in the Allahabad High Court.
Acting on the report, then CJI Khanna wrote to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi recommending the judge's impeachment.&nbsp;

Chhattisgarh has made major gains in Swachh Survekshan 2025 with 25 cities in the top 100 and Raipur achieving a 7-star Garbage-Free rating, reflecting statewide improvements in urban sanitation.

Chhattisgarh has once again registered a strong presence at the national level in the Government of India&rsquo;s Swachh Survekshan 2024-25. Thanks to the stellar performance of its urban local bodies, 115 out of 169 participating cities in the state have significantly improved their rankings.
In this national cleanliness assessment that covered 4,566 cities across the country, 25 cities from Chhattisgarh secured a place in the top 100 &mdash; a major jump from last year when only 16 cities made it to the top-100 list.
A total of 62 urban local bodies in the state have enhanced their status in the Garbage-Free City Star Rating, while the number of cities attaining Single, Three, or Five-Star ratings has risen from 71 to 114.
The state capital Raipur has set a new benchmark by earning the highest Seven-Star rating, up from Five Stars last year. It achieved this in the Garbage-Free City category and has also been declared a "Water Plus" city for its sanitation standards.
Bilaspur, Korba, and Bhilai Nagar have moved up from the ODF Plus Plus category to the Water Plus category this year.
A total of 163 urban local bodies in Chhattisgarh have now attained ODF Plus Plus certification. This includes municipalities like Kirandul and Bhatapara and the Kurra Nagar Panchayat, which were previously only in the ODF category. Sitapur Nagar Panchayat has also advanced from ODF Plus to ODF Plus Plus status.
Over the past 18 months, 62 urban bodies have improved their Garbage-Free City Star Rating through sustained efforts. Bilaspur and Ambikapur progressed from Three-Star to Five-Star, while Bhilai Nagar, Jagdalpur Municipal Corporation, Jamul Municipality, and Gharghoda Nagar Panchayat moved up from Single-Star to Three-Star ratings.
Cities like Dhamtari, Shivrinarayan, and Rajpur &mdash; which had no previous star ratings &mdash; have directly entered the Three-Star category. Due to special efforts in cleanliness and beautification, 52 cities that were previously unrated have now achieved Single-Star status.
A significant improvement in national rankings has also been observed across several urban bodies:
- Simga rose from 649th to 95th position
- Jashpur improved from 637th to 91st
- Rajpur moved from 630th to 63rd
- Gharghoda climbed from 616th to 71st
- Bhilai-Charoda jumped from 587th to 68th
- Dornapal went from 557th to 81st
- Dantewada improved from 552nd to 70th
- Jagdalpur from 461st to 55th
- Mungeli from 447th to 86th
- Kawardha from 430th to 77th
- Kunkuri from 426th to 84th
- Durg from 314th to 80th
- Rajnandgaon from 268th to 46th
- Bhilai Nagar from 267th to 22nd
- Chhura from 230th to 76th
- Pratappur from 173rd to 62nd
- Balrampur from 65th to 53rd
- Raipur climbed from 12th to an impressive 4th place nationally
Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai hailed the performance of the state's cities as a result of collective efforts by local bodies and the people.
He said, &ldquo;Urban governments, the state government, and the central government are working together with innovation to make cities cleaner and more beautiful.&rdquo;
He expressed confidence that the rankings of Chhattisgarh&rsquo;s cities would improve even further and added that this national success will inspire all urban bodies to perform even better.
Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Urban Administration and Development Shri Arun Sao congratulated the urban local bodies for their excellent performance in the survey.
He said, &ldquo;In the financial year 2024-25, the state government released ₹7,400 crore for urban development and sanitation, and this positive outcome is a direct result of that investment.&rdquo;
He added that the department had instructed all municipal commissioners, and the chief municipal officers of municipalities and nagar panchayats to conduct morning inspections with their teams to supervise daily cleaning work.
&ldquo;These two departmental initiatives have played a crucial role in this achievement,&rdquo; he said.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav highlighted the state&rsquo;s remarkable progress in wildlife conservation on the occasion of International Tiger Day, stating that Madhya Pradesh, home to nine tiger reserves, proudly holds the title of the &lsquo;Tiger State&rsquo;.&nbsp;
He noted that the growing population of tigers and other wildlife is a result of sustained efforts, with Madhya Pradesh emerging as a model of effective conservation and management.
He also emphasized the role of community participation in reinforcing ecosystems and promoting tourism.
Dr. Yadav made these remarks at a state-level event held at the Kushabhau Thakre Convention Center in Bhopal, where he extended greetings to the public on Nag Panchami and inaugurated the programme with Deep Prajjwalan.
During the event, the Chief Minister flagged off three wildlife transportation vehicles, three wildlife medical vans, and two dog squad rescue vehicles, inspecting their advanced features designed to strengthen the state&rsquo;s response to wildlife emergencies.

Acknowledging the work of frontline conservation staff, Dr. Yadav said, &ldquo;The tireless efforts of forest personnel have led to the expansion of forest cover and an increase in wildlife numbers.&rdquo;
He added that Madhya Pradesh is becoming a leading example of human-tiger coexistence. He also noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the state has reintroduced cheetahs and added Ratapani as the eighth tiger reserve.
He announced plans to develop zoos and wildlife rescue centres in Ujjain and Jabalpur that will focus on rehabilitation and conservation beyond conventional exhibits.
Dr. Yadav also said, &ldquo;India is home to more tigers than any other country in the world&mdash;and Madhya Pradesh proudly leads among Indian states.&rdquo; He cited the recent creation of Ratapani and Madhav Tiger Reserves and revealed that tiger safaris will soon be launched in buffer zones to offer controlled eco-tourism experiences.
Local Involvement in Conservation
The Chief Minister inaugurated a wildlife-themed exhibition and engaged with tribal women who tied rakhi to him and showcased local handicrafts. At the Pench Tiger Reserve stall, part of its 'Bagh Dev' initiative, Dr. Yadav molded a clay tiger replica, symbolizing his support for growing tiger populations.
Release of Key Publications and Launch of &lsquo;Gaj-Rakshak&rsquo; App
Several major conservation documents were released by the Chief Minister, including the Hindi edition of the State Wildlife Management Plan (2023&ndash;2043), a manual on cheetah sedation and management, a wildlife management report, a publication from Pench Tiger Reserve, and a vulture census report.
He also unveiled a special elephant identification dossier from Bandhavgarh, a commemorative postal cover for Tiger Day, and a poster on wild owl species.
To reduce human-elephant conflicts, Dr. Yadav launched the &lsquo;Gaj-Rakshak&rsquo; mobile app, designed to streamline conflict mitigation and monitoring efforts.

The event also saw the launch of wildlife documentaries, including a Pench Tiger Reserve film on community-led tiger conservation, "Mrityunjay" by Kanha Tiger Reserve, "Satpura: Past, Present and Future," and "Abode of Cheetahs," spotlighting cheetah reintroduction.
Awards for Wildlife Champions
Chief Minister Dr. Yadav honoured individuals and teams for exceptional contributions to wildlife protection. The awardees included forest officers recognised by INTERPOL for apprehending an international tiger poacher, officials managing cheetah conservation, and local community members assisting in wildlife rescue and habitat protection.
Notable names included Shobha Jaware, Shubhi Jain, Mahavir Singh Pandey, and members of eco-development committees like Mirchibadi from Pench Tiger Reserve.

Minister of State for Forests and Environment, Shri Dilip Singh Ahirwar, praised the role of Satpura Tiger Reserve in enhancing India's global conservation status.
He said, &ldquo;Madhya Pradesh leads in the population of tigers, cheetahs, vultures and wolves.&rdquo; He noted that under CM Yadav&rsquo;s leadership, initiatives such as vulture census and multi-species conservation programs are setting new benchmarks.
The event was attended by key dignitaries including MLA Shri Rameshwar Sharma, Municipal Corporation Chairperson Shri Kishan Suryavanshi, Additional Chief Secretary (Forest) Shri Ashok Barnwal, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Shri Aseem Srivastava, and numerous forest department and community committee members.

The Amarnath Yatra resumed from the Baltal axis on Thursday, a day after it was suspended due to heavy rains, officials said.
However, the yatra remains suspended from the Pahalgam axis as urgent maintenance and repair works have to be carried out on the route, they said.
Torrential rains in Kashmir had rendered the roads unsafe, following which the pilgrimage was suspended on both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes on Wednesday.
"The yatra resumed this morning from the Baltal route," said an official, adding, "In view of maintenance works required to be carried out on the Pahalgam axis of Amarnath Yatra route following the recent rains, the yatra shall continue only through Baltal axis." The official said that no convoy movement would be allowed towards the Baltal and Nunwan base camps from Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu on Thursday.
So far, more than 3.93 lakh yatris have paid obeisance at the holy cave shrine this year.
The annual yatra that began on July 3 will culminate of August 9.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday reviewed 3,397 development proposals worth Rs 42,891 crore. He was chairing a meeting with public representatives of the Lucknow division.
During the meeting, 42 MLAs and 5 MLCs from across Lucknow, Hardoi, Rae Bareli, Unnao, Sitapur, and Lakhimpur Kheri districts presented their inputs on the newly proposed projects and infrastructure requirements.
Adityanath touched upon the historical, cultural, and social attributes of each district in the division and made his suggestions.
He described Lucknow as not only a hub of modernity but also the cultural capital of Awadh, a vibrant symbol of art, literature, and tradition.
"Like Kashi, Lucknow's soul is eternal and its spirit universally resonant," he said. He praised Hardoi's deep-rooted legacy of "truth and penance," and Rae Bareli's rich contributions to literature, the freedom movement, and folk art.
He noted that the Unnao district served as the 'karmabhoomi' of Chandrashekhar Azad and other stalwarts of the freedom struggle.
About Sitapur, the chief minister said its religious and spiritual stature was unparalleled.
He emphasised Lakhimpur Kheri's prominence on the global wildlife map due to Dudhwa National Park, praising its biodiversity, the agricultural richness of the Terai region, and the vibrant Tharu culture.
"Timely execution, a clear action plan, continuous dialogue, and regular feedback are essential for ensuring quality and punctual completion of projects," he said.
He emphasised the completion of all road projects, four-laning of district headquarters, two-laning of block headquarters, sugar mill roads, single-connectivity roads, and black spot rectification within a strict deadline Special priority, he said, should be given to road construction in villages associated with public workers and martyrs.
Adityanath also reviewed the Chief Minister Tourism Promotion Scheme, under which more than 1,000 religious sites in the state have seen a facelift.

Uttar Pradesh begins phase-wise training for over 3,900 teachers under the 'Learning by Doing' programme, aiming to make science and math teaching more engaging and practical.

In an effort to merge innovation with practicality in the education sector, the Uttar Pradesh government has introduced a new initiative under the 'Learning by Doing' programme.
This initiative is aimed at equipping teachers with experimental and technical skills to make classroom learning more engaging and effective.
The programme will be implemented under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan and the PM SHRI scheme. Selected teachers of science and mathematics, technical instructors, DIET master trainers, and educators from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) will undergo specialised, phase-wise residential training. These sessions will take place at the Institute of Entrepreneurship Development and the Deen Dayal Upadhyay State Rural Development Institute in Lucknow.
The training aims to promote modern teaching methods, fostering a hands-on learning experience for students. With technical support from UNICEF and the STAR Forum-Vigyan Ashram, the training will start on August 5, 2025, and will continue in phases until March 18, 2026, involving participants across four categories.
&ldquo;The Learning by Doing programme is poised to give a new direction to the education system of Uttar Pradesh. The initiative will not only enhance the teaching skills of educators but also offer students hands-on, logical, and engaging learning experiences. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the initiative is a major step toward improving education quality through empowered teachers,&rdquo; said Sandeep Singh, Minister of Basic Education of Uttar Pradesh.
To ensure the teaching of science and mathematics becomes more experiential, the programme places strong emphasis on the Learning by Doing model. As part of the plan, two science subject lecturers from each district will participate in a 4-day Training of Trainers (TOT) programme.
Science and math teachers, along with technical instructors from 2,274 schools selected in 2024&ndash;25, will receive a 2-day specialised training. For the 3,288 newly selected schools in 2025&ndash;26 (including KGBVs), the training duration will be three days. District Coordinators (Community Participation) will also be trained for 2 or 3 days to enhance school-community interaction.
The programme will involve 76 DIET faculty members serving as master trainers. From the 2,274 selected schools, around 2,074 science/mathematics teachers and technical instructors will be trained. Additionally, nearly 1,888 participants from the 3,288 newly selected schools&mdash;including KGBVs&mdash;will also receive training during the 2025&ndash;26 phase.
KGBV teachers are expected to be an integral part of the training rollout in the upcoming academic year.

The event, focused on promoting self-reliance among youth, is part of the broader CM YUVA Yojana initiative which, according to an official statement, seeks to "turn the aspirations of the youth into reality."
During the conclave, five young beneficiaries narrated how the scheme has transformed their lives&mdash;not just financially but also by nurturing entrepreneurship and independence. They highlighted that the initiative was not limited to announcements but was firmly rooted in on-ground execution, enabling real impact across Uttar Pradesh. Each speaker expressed sincere appreciation to CM Yogi Adityanath for converting their dreams into accomplishments.
One such story was that of Prabhnoor Kaur from Kanpur, a professional baker trained in Bengaluru. Lacking the resources to start her business, she discovered the CM YUVA Yojana through the District Industries Office. She applied and received a loan of ₹4.25 lakh, which helped her open a luxury bakery studio that now provides employment to others. She stated, "The scheme has given youth a platform to realize their dreams."
Vijay Pandey, a traditional wooden toy maker, had the skills but lacked capital to grow. After learning about the scheme on social media, he reached out to the District Industries Center and secured funding within 15&ndash;20 days. Today, he supplies toys to 16 districts and employs over 15 people. He remarked, "The Chief Minister didn't just announce the scheme, he ensured it reached people like us with full commitment."
Lucknow-based biotechnologist Tuba Siddiqui entered the eco-friendly cleaning products space with the help of the scheme. Initially hesitant to take a loan, she was impressed by the program&rsquo;s transparency and simplicity. The loan was sanctioned in just 15 days, enabling her to grow her business, which now provides employment to over 10 individuals and supplies to major cities like Delhi and Mumbai. She said, "Today, I proudly stand as a woman entrepreneur who has carved her path."
Shashank Chaurasia, a pharmacist from Lucknow, left his job in Bengaluru to follow his passion for photography. With assistance from the CM YUVA Yojana, he launched a wedding and commercial photography studio, which now has an annual turnover of ₹4&ndash;5 lakh and generates employment for other local youth.
Amardeep Singh, a physiotherapist from Sitapur, was facing financial constraints and family responsibilities when a friend told him about the scheme. He availed funding to set up a recovery center, which has made him self-reliant and provided jobs to 4&ndash;5 others.
The conclave underscored how the CM YUVA Yojana is driving change at the grassroots level, transforming ambition into enterprise for countless young citizens across the state.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 25 per cent tariff on all goods coming from India starting August 1, plus an unspecified penalty on purchase of Russian crude oil and military equipment.
Asked for a comment, BJP MP Pratap Sarangi told PTI Videos, "Due to the able leadership of Modiji, we have full faith that this move of America cannot affect our economy. We have full faith that Modiji will take it on." He said, "For the benefit of India, we also have to apply counter tactics. We also import and export. We are a big market &hellip; There is a huge market to sell our goods in the world," Sarangi added, "If they increase the tariff, then India will not sit quietly." On Congress leader Jairam Ramesh targeting Modi following Trump's announcement, Sarangi hit back, and said, "What will these poor people do? To prove their existence, they will make every possible effort to humiliate Modi. But we see that all of their moves fail." Sarangi also accused the opposition of not having much faith in India's sovereignty.
"They mostly trust Pakistani and foreign elements for their source of information. I feel pity for them," he told PTI Videos in Parliament House complex.
Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske said the government will take an appropriate decision on the issue.
"Our senior leaders who think about the country, its foreign policy and implement it, will take a decision in this regard," he told PTI Videos, when asked for comment on the US tariff.
He lambasted the opposition parties for using the opportunity to target the prime minister.
"If any problem comes before the country, everyone should fight it together. Decisions should be taken in the interest of the country. But these opposition people (leaders) are happy," he said.
"Are these Indians or people working against the country? We have to think about this now," Mhaske added.

BJP MP Praven Khandelwal called the tariffs "unfortunate" and reposed faith in Modi's leadership.
"It's unfortunate in my personal opinion. The government of India will definitely take cognizance of it. And whatever view the Indian government would take on this, Indian trade and industry will decide their stand in light of the government view. Whatever stand our government will take, trade and industry will also take the same stand accordingly," he told PTI Videos.
The government on Wednesday said it is studying the implications of US President Donald Trump's announcement to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Indian goods, along with a penalty from August 1 and it is still hopeful of concluding a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement.
The government, an official statement said, will take all necessary steps to secure the country's national interest, as has been the case with other trade agreements, including the latest with the UK.
