Zaheer Khan questions India's flexible strategy under Gautam Gambhir

Zaheer Khan, a former Indian fast bowler, has raised concerns about the potential downsides of "excessive flexibility" in the Indian cricket team's approach under coach Gautam Gambhir. His remarks likely refer to India's experimentation with their batting order in the first two ODIs against England, where they emerged victorious by four wickets in each game.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Zaheer highlighted the importance of having a balance between flexibility and stability. "There's always room for flexibility in a lineup, especially from the number three spot onward. However, within this flexibility, some protocols must be followed to ensure smooth functioning," Zaheer explained.

He warned that without proper communication and protocols, players might feel insecure, which could eventually affect team performance. "This insecurity can become a problem if not addressed. It’s crucial to be prepared for such scenarios," he noted.

Zaheer elaborated by comparing the current approach with that of former coach Rahul Dravid, stating that different situations call for adaptation rather than judging an approach as inherently good or bad. "All stakeholders, including senior management, players, and selectors, need to be aligned for the system to work effectively," he added.

Ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy, India has been experimenting with its batting line-up. In the recent ODIs against England, Shreyas Iyer was sent in at number four, followed by Axar Patel, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, and then Ravindra Jadeja.

Interestingly, KL Rahul was selected over the left-handed wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant for these matches. Rahul, known for his opening role in the Test series against Australia and the IPL, took on a middle-order position in this series, highlighting the team's current experimentations.
