Chris Woakes and Rishabh Pant: A Testament to Sportsmanship

London, Aug 7 (PTI): England all-rounder Chris Woakes recently shared a moment of mutual respect between him and Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant following the Test series where both displayed remarkable sportsmanship despite injuries.

During the fourth Test in Manchester, Woakes delivered a ball that inadvertently struck Pant’s foot, leading to a toe fracture that ruled the Indian wicketkeeper out of the series-deciding fifth match. Nevertheless, India showed resilience, securing a narrow six-run victory at The Oval to draw the series 2-2.

Both players emerged as heroes for their teams, battling through personal injuries to support their sides. Pant took to the field in Manchester with a broken toe, while Woakes bravely batted on in the fifth Test despite a dislocated shoulder.

"I saw Rishabh post an image of me on Instagram with a salute emoji," Woakes recounted in an interview with 'The Guardian'. "I replied, thanking him: 'Appreciate the love and hope the foot is OK,' etc."

Pant responded with a kind voice note, expressing his hope for Woakes's swift recovery and suggesting they meet again on the field. Woakes acknowledged his part in Pant’s injury, saying, “I obviously said sorry for the broken foot.”

Woakes also recalled his encounter with India’s captain, Shubman Gill, who praised him for his courage. Although Woakes didn’t face a ball in the fifth Test, he admitted that running between the wickets was a significant challenge. "(India captain) Shubman (Gill) said something like, 'That was incredibly brave'," Woakes said. "I told him: 'You've had an unbelievable series, well played, and credit to your team'.

The series proved to be a grueling test for both teams, each side displaying valor and determination. While both were eager for victory, there was a shared sense of justice in the series concluding as a draw.
