England knocked the hosts and defending champions Australia out of the T20 World Cup after they registered a 4-wicket win over Sri Lanka at Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

Opting to bat first, the Lankans got off to a powerful start and were going at a run rate of almost 10 runs until opener Kusal Mendis got out in the 4th over.

However, Pathum Nissanka continued from the other end with some lusty blows before he got out for 67 runs off 45 balls. After that, leggie Adil Rashid's economical spell and Mark Wood fiery spell triggered a collapse which reduced Sri Lanka from 118-4 in the 16th over to 141-8 in 20 Overs.

Chasing a modest 142-run target, Jos Buttler and Alex Hales gave the Three Lions a fiery start and stitched a 75-run stand before Hasaranga got the wicket of the English captain. Hales became Hasaranga's second prey and went back to pavillion, smashing 47 runs off 30 deliveries.

England then suffered a big collapse and lost three wickets for just 29 runs in almost 5 overs. However, Ben Stokes' used his experience to great effect and took the game to the last over. Stokes' unbeaten 42 runs eventually took the Three Lions home with two balls to spare and a place in the semis alongside New Zealand.
