Pat Cummins Eyes Swift Recovery for Ashes Return After Lumbar Injury

Sydney, Sep 10 (PTI) — Australian Test captain Pat Cummins has announced he is targeting a 4-6 week recovery timeline from a lumbar bone stress injury. During this period, Cummins plans to take a complete break from bowling and minimize running. The 32-year-old fast bowler has been left out of Australia's squad for the upcoming white-ball series against New Zealand and India, and he is expected to miss the Shield matches as he prioritizes a return for the opening Ashes Test in Perth, starting on November 21.

Cummins, speaking to cricket.com.au, suggested that he aims to resume bowling at least a month or possibly six weeks before the Ashes. He admitted, however, that detailed planning for his return is still pending. "At the moment, it's pretty light for the next few weeks. Not much running and zero bowling," he added, emphasizing his focus on rest and recovery.

The captain experienced back soreness during a Test series victory against the West Indies two months ago, with subsequent scans revealing lumbar bone stress. Despite his absence, Cummins expressed confidence in the depth of Australia's bowling lineup. He noted that bowlers like Jhye Richardson, Michael Neser, Brendan Doggett, and Sean Abbott are strong candidates to step up. Cummins also mentioned the importance of Shield and white-ball cricket in preparing these players for the upcoming series.

Additionally, Scott Boland is considered a viable replacement should any key bowler be sidelined by injury. Cummins remains optimistic, saying the thorough planning and extensive talent pool leave the team well-equipped to handle this challenge.
