Oman Appoints Carlo Queiroz as National Team Coach for World Cup Push

Muscat (Oman), July 16 (AP) — Oman has enlisted the expertise of Carlo Queiroz as its national team coach, a strategic move ahead of the pivotal autumn fixtures that might see the team secure its maiden World Cup appearance.

The seasoned Portuguese manager, renowned for guiding Iran in the 2014 and 2018 World Cup tournaments, will embark on his new role immediately.

Oman, alongside Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, has progressed to the fourth round of qualifying. From each group of three, the top two teams will earn a spot in the 2026 World Cup, hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The draw for this critical fourth round is scheduled for Thursday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with matches set for October. Following this stage, November will see the second-place teams contest for a position in a playoff tournament.

"This decision aligns with our efforts to elevate the team's performance in the forthcoming games," stated the Oman Football Association in an announcement.

Queiroz succeeds Rashid Jaber, who was instrumental in Oman achieving a fourth-place finish in the third round, thus maintaining its qualification aspirations.

The 72-year-old Queiroz brings a wealth of experience, having managed illustrious sides including Real Madrid, Portugal, Egypt, Colombia, and Qatar.

Queiroz was relieved of his duties as Qatar's coach in December 2023, following an 11-match tenure. (AP) APA APA
