Kapil Dev Backs Indian Team Over Individual Stars for Asia Cup Victory

New Delhi, Sep 12 (PTI) - Legendary cricketer Kapil Dev has thrown his support behind the Indian cricket team, predicting their victory in the Asia Cup. As India prepares for a high-stakes match against Pakistan in Dubai, Kapil emphasized the importance of team effort over individual performances. This upcoming clash marks the first meeting between the two cricketing giants since the border tensions escalated in May.

"I am backing the Indian team. India will play as a team and return home with the trophy. This is my wish, and from the way they are playing, I believe they will emerge victorious," Kapil said, speaking at a golf event. He further stated that focus should be on the team's performance rather than individual players.

"We should only talk about India as a team, not individuals. It's about collective effort. If someone performs exceptionally, that will naturally stand out, but our focus should be on the team," he added. Kapil, who leads the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), also commented on leadership in the team when asked about Shubman Gill's potential as captain in all formats.

"What's important is they are playing for India. It's not about who is captain; it's about representing the country," Kapil remarked. Regarding seasoned players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Kapil acknowledged their contributions but pointed out that it's time for the new generation to make their mark.

He stated, "Virat and Rohit had their time and delivered excellent performances for India. Now, it's the next generation's turn to prove themselves." On a related note, Kapil advised the Indian team to focus solely on their game amid external distractions.

"The Indian players should remain focused on their performance. They have a strong side and should aim to win. The government will handle its affairs; the players must concentrate on theirs," he said. In light of the Pahalgam attack, India's policy is to avoid bilateral sports engagements with Pakistan but not to hinder participation in multilateral events. PTI
