Pant, the team's unflappable maverick with innate confidence in his ability to dominate bowling attacks anywhere in the world, struck 118 off 140 balls and added 195 runs for the fourth wicket with the elegant KL Rahul, who constructed a hundred of his own on the fourth and penultimate day of the first Test.
However, India's batting crumbled spectacularly for a second time in three days after the dismissal of the two second-innings centurions, as they were all out for 364 on a riveting day.
Ben Duckett (9 batting) and Zak Crawley (12 batting) reduced the target to 350 after England reached 21 for no loss at stumps.
India lost most of their wickets in the final session.
This was after the iconic 'Hey Jude' by The Beatles played softly in the background as Pant closed in on his eighth Test ton, eventually getting there with a single off 130 balls to join Zimbabwe legend Andy Flower as the only stumpers to achieve a remarkable feat.
Having curbed his natural instinct after attempting a flashy shot in the first session, Pant bid his time and switched gears post lunch to reach his second century in the match, following his magnificent 134 in the first innings.
He embarked on an adventure straightaway, but having endured few nervy moments, Pant exhibited a tenacity to stay put at the crease, before cutting loose to dominate the bowlers, who seemed to have run out of ideas in the face of his dazzling array of strokes.
Pant was finally dismissed when he found Zak Crawley at long-on off Shoaib Bashir, who was taken to the cleaners by the swashbuckling keeper-batter, who also became the first Indian to register two hundreds in a Test match in England.
Earlier in the day, Rahul, who was rewarded for his indefatigable resistance, produced a masterclass in timing and temperament, and played some sublime strokes that would have delighted the purists.
Ahead by 96 runs in the beginning, India were off to a disastrous start as they lost skipper Shubman Gill seven balls into the day's play, but the English bowlers did not taste further success in the first session, though they kept testing the two batters with their probing line and length.
On a windy and cloudy morning at Headingley, Gill chopped Brydon Carse's good-length delivery on to the stumps.
Coming off an elegant hundred in the first innings, Gill was rooted to the crease as the ball cramped him for room before disturbing the stumps. As he walked back to the dressing room, a dejected Gill stared at the place where the ball landed, wondering if it pitched on one of those cracks.
England were delighted to see the back of the India captain, which paved the way for the arrival of Pant, and he was his usual maverick self while attempting the audacious shots that define his batting.
Pant rode his luck as he charged down the ground to try and whack the fast bowlers, and while he could not connect the way he would have liked to initially, he got runs off them. Pant got off the mark with a thick outside edge off Chris Woakes that flew over the slip cordon.
The flamboyant keeper attempted the slog sweep, the trademark falling paddle sweep, and was also heard scolding himself in the stump mic after playing a reckless shot, which prompted Ben Stokes to seek a review.
"It is not important. If you want to hit, do it with a straight bat next ball. Why are you trying to score forcefully," an annoyed Pant was caught saying on the stump mic.
The ball in question was too full and swinging, but it made contact with the bat before thudding into Pant's pads, and the TV umpire ruled in his favour.
In fact Stokes, too, heard two noises but since the batter was Pant, the English captain opted to try his luck with a review.
Rahul looked calm, composed and self-assured at the other end, helping India swell the lead brick by brick, even as Pant mixed caution with aggression.
Luck too smiled on Rahul as Harry Brook dropped him at gully after the batter tried to steer a quick Josh Tongue delivery.

The elegant left-hander of his times, Ganguly scored 18,575 runs in Test and ODIs but regrets missing many centuries in his career in which he competed in 311 ODIs and 113 Tests.
Ganguly's remorse came to fore when he was asked what advise he would give to his old self.
"I missed a lot of hundreds, I should have scored more. Too many 90s and 80s," Ganguly told PTI in an interaction.

But you can't change it. " In ODIs, Ganguly had 72 half centuries and in Test the number stands at 35.

Ganguly regretted dropping Anil Kumble, one of the greatest leg spinners in the world, a number of times during his captaincy.
"Anil Kumble, a few times, because he was so good," he said.
Asked if the ICC should look at the proliferation of the T20 Leagues across the world to curb the players' temptation to ply their trade in high-paying T20 tournaments, Ganguly said probably it is difficult to change.
Nicholas Pooran and Heinrich Klassen recently quit and Ganguly was surprised.
"They do regulate but I don't know how you stop Test playing nations from having their own leagues." For Ganguly, Australia was his favourite rival side and pacer Glenn McGrath the most feared bowler.
Ganguly revealed that by the end of 2026 his biopic will release and Rajkumar Rao will be the protagonist.
"The shooting will start in January, the pre-production, scripting and story writing takes a lot of time, shooting does not take much time," he said.

Out of favour India batter Prithvi Shaw has written to the Mumbai Cricket Association seeking a transfer ahead of the upcoming domestic season.
Shaw has been out of red ball set-up for some time even as he has played white ball cricket but his off-field disciplinary issues have grabbed more air time than his on-field performances.
A senior MCA official confirmed to PTI on Monday that the governing body has received a letter from Shaw seeking their NOC.
"Yes, we have received a letter from him and it has been forwarded to the apex council for approval, and a decision on the same would be taken by the evening hopefully," the MCA source informed.
The 25-year-old Shaw, who has played five Tests and six ODIs for India, was dropped from the Mumbai Ranji side last year on grounds of poor fitness and lack of discipline.
Having missed the rest of the Ranji Trophy season, Shaw last played for Mumbai in the final of the premier domestic tournament Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy against Madhya Pradesh, which his side won by five wickets.
Shaw&rsquo;s fitness levels and discipline were not only severely criticised by administrators over the course of last season, but Shreyas Iyer, who led Mumbai to title win in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy also seemed trifle unhappy.
"He needs to get his work ethics right, and if he does that, the sky is the limit for him," Iyer told reporters in Bengaluru.

"It's something I've been working hard on, just generally putting my game in a better place and making sure my defence is as good as it can be." However, the graceful right hander agreed that there is still a long way to go in the marathon five-Test series.
"It's a long series, and there's a lot to be done in this game still as well," he added.

Asked if he feels bad when people write his epitaph after every big injury, Bumrah replied: "People had said in all these years, some said, (I will play only) eight months, some said 10 months but now I have played 10 years of international cricket, 12-13 years of IPL.
"Even now people say (after every injury), he will be finished, he is gone. Let them say, I will do my own work. Every four months these things will crop up, but as long as Almighty wants, I will play.
"I prepare my best, and then will leave it on God as to how much more blessings he will bestow upon me." He said that he is not here to change people's perceptions.
"What people write is beyond my control and I can't advise people on what to write about me. My name in headline gets viewership but I don't get bothered by that," Bumrah, who took 5 for 83 in England's first innings said.
He said that wicket is good for batting although it might crack up a bit towards the end of the match.
"At this moment pretty good wicket to bat on. It is a little bit two paced, no big demons in wicket. Due to weather, new ball will swing but that is what you expect in Test cricket. We would like to get a big total and get that cushion."

Jaiswal soon fetched his hundred with a scampered single off Brydon Carse, after hammering him for successive boundaries through point and cover, and celebrated with a roar and leap into the air.
Earlier, openers KL Rahul (42) and Jaiswal helped India make a confident start to a long tour, stitching together 91 runs that enabled India to blunt the England new ball attack on a largely sunny day, but not without its own share of assistance for bowlers in the shape of movement and carry.
But not tough enough for the Indian batters to negotiate.
Jaiswal began the morning with a gorgeous drive through mid-off off Woakes, and Rahul played a series of exquisite drives through covers off Carse and Tongue as the first session produced an astounding 16 fours.

Veteran Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh got off to a modest start with 2-under 70 in the opening round of the OFX Irish Legends event on the Legends Tour in Europe.
Jeev, a four-time winner on the main Tour, had four birdies against two bogeys in his round and had one birdie against one bogey on the front nine of the Mount Juliet Estate.
On the back nine, the Indian ace had three birdies against one bogey in his round of 70 in unusually warm weather.
After an opening round of 65, Keith Horne of South Africa is one shot clear of compatriot James Kingston who carded a solid 66.
Horne had two eagles and four birdies against two bogeys in his 65, while Kingston had seven birdies against one bogey.

Pant, who had an exceptional outing with the bat during the Headingley Test with hundreds in both the innings, was reprimanded for his on-field conduct during England's first innings.
The 27-year-old was found to have breached Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.
"Pant was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to showing dissent at an Umpire's decision during an International Match," the ICC said in a statement.
In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Pant's disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in 24 months.
The incident happened in the 61st over of England's innings, when Harry Brook and Ben Stokes were batting. Pant was seen having a discussion with the umpires regarding the condition of the ball.
When the umpires refused to change the ball after checking it with the ball gauge, the wicket-keeper showed his dissent by throwing the ball on the ground in front of the umpires.
There was no disciplinary hearing as Pant admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by ICC match referee Richie Richardson.
The charges were brought in by the on-field umpires, Chris Gaffaney and Paul Reiffel, along with the third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and the fourth umpire, Mike Burns.
Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player's match fee, and one or two demerit points.

A "heartbroken" Indian cricket fraternity came together in grief and reverence to pay tribute to former left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi, who died following a cardiac arrest in London.
Despite spending much of his early career in the shadow of the great Bishan Singh Bedi, Doshi carved a niche for himself with his unwavering resolve. He died at the age of 77 on Monday.
Leading the tributes for him was the great Sachin Tendulkar, who recalled his first meeting with the "warm-hearted" Doshi during a tour of the UK in 1990.
"I met Dilip bhai for the first time in the UK in 1990, and he bowled to me in the nets on that tour. He was really fond of me, and I reciprocated his feelings.
"A warm-hearted soul like Dilip bhai will be deeply missed. I will miss those cricketing conversations which we invariably had. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti," Tendulkar posted on X.
Former India all-rounder and head coach Ravi Shastri, who shared the field with Doshi, remembered him as "always immaculate, a gentleman to the core and a fine, fine bowler".
"Heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace. Really sad to hear about the passing of Dilip Doshi." Doshi made his Test debut in 1979 after Bedi's retirement and played the last of his 33 games in 1983. In those matches, he took 114 wickets with six five-wicket hauls and was exceptional at home during the first three seasons, completing 100 scalps in just 28 Tests.
Former India cricketer and selector Sunil Joshi also a left-arm spinner like Doshi shared a poignant memory.
"Still can't believe it, we spoke just last Wednesday, and he sounded well. Heartbroken by the passing of Dilip Doshi Sir a legend on the field,a true gentleman off it, he meant a lot to me, and this loss is deeply personal. My heartfelt condolences to Nayan &amp; the Doshi family," Joshi tweeted.
Former India captain Anil Kumble, who was among the first to pay his tribute to the late cricketer, too, expressed his sorrow: "Heartbreaking to hear about Dilip bhai's passing. May God give strength to his family and friends to bear this loss. Nayan, thinking of you buddy." Former Indian keeper-batter Parthiv Patel wrote, "I'm heartbroken and still in shock about Dilip uncle...he was truly special. Nayan (Doshi's son), thinking of you all with love and strength." Manoj Tiwary echoed the collective sense of loss.
"It's a shock! India's legendary cricketer Dilip Doshi passed away at the age of 77 due to a cardiac arrest in London. May God give his family and close ones the strength to deal with this. May his soul rest in peace." Former cricketers Pragyan Ojha and Harbhajan Singh also paid their respects.
"Saddened to hear about the passing of Dilip Doshi sir, a distinguished left-arm spinner who served Indian cricket with grace and grit. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace," said Ojha.
"RIP Dilip Doshi sir Condolences to family," Harbhajan wrote.

Former India left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi, who carved out a niche for himself despite being in the shadows of Bishan Singh Bedi, died due to cardiac arrest in London on Monday, the Saurashtra Cricket Association said.
He was 77 and is survived by his wife Kalindi, son Nayan, who has also played first- class cricket, and daughter Vishakha.
Doshi made his Test debut in 1979 after Bedi's retirement and played his last of his 33 games in 1983.
In those matches, he took 114 wickets with six five-wicket hauls and was exceptional at home during the first three seasons, completing 100 scalps in just 28 Tests.
His finest hour was getting five wickets in India's Test win at the MCG in 1981 when the visitors defended a paltry target.
Doshi bowled with a fractured toe and was literally unplayable on an up-and-down MCG track. Doshi, Karsan Ghavri and the peerless Kapil Dev won that game for India.
He was also a stalwart in English county circuit having plied his trade for more than a decade there. He represented Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire.
"Dilip bhai suffered a heart attack in London. He is no more," Saurashtra CA president Jaydev Shah told PTI.
"Dilip's passing away is a personal loss to me. He was like a family. He was one of the finest human beings," former BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said.
In the Indian domestic circuit, he played for Bengal and Saurashtra. In all he had a staggering 898 first-class scalps with 43 five-fors.
He was Bengal's go-to man in Ranji Trophy for years.
While Bedi remains India's greatest left-arm spinner, Doshi was one of the most accurate bowlers who would flight the ball when required and was very accurate for the better part of his career.
The touring Australian, English and West Indies teams found it difficult to handle his arm balls, and it was Javed Miandad, who actually hastened his exit from international cricket during the 1982-83 series against Pakistan.
The bespectacled cricketer was a gentleman to the core.
Miandad would often tease him by enquiring about his room number in the middle of the game.
"Ae Dilip tela loom number kya hai," Miandad would ask in a slurry tone.
His batting and fielding in those days wasn't top notch but in that era he could survive because his bowling was from top drawer.
He was a close friend of Sunil Gavaskar and the legend was first introduced to his wife Marshaniel by Doshi.
After retirement, he had migrated to London where he became a successful businessman.
He would divide his time between London, Mumbai and Rajkot, and it was quite strange that the BCCI never bothered to use Doshi's expertise.
Former India captain Anil Kumble was among the first to pay his tribute to the late cricketer.
"Heartbreaking to hear about Dilip bhai's passing. May God give strength to his family and friends to bear this loss. Nayan, thinking of you buddy," Kumble wrote on X.

India opener KL Rahul has asserted that the visitors will give themselves the "best chance" to dismiss the England batting lineup and take a 1-0 lead in the series when the final day's play in the first Test resumes here on Tuesday.
The Headindley Test was interestingly poised on Monday with India setting the hosts a tricky 371-run target for victory, while Ben Stokes' side began the chase expertly on day four with openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett erasing 21 runs from the total.
"Blockbuster finish waiting tomorrow. There's definitely going to be a result. That's what England have said openly and it gives us the opportunity to pick up 10 wickets," said Rahul, who along with Rishabh Pant, played a pivotal role in propping up India before they were all out for 364.
Rahul scored 137 while Pant smashed 118 as the duo stitched together a 195-run stand for the fourth wicket to bail India out after they had lost skipper Shubman Gill early in the morning session.
"Today was a tricky wicket. Tomorrow it might break even more. We'll give ourselves the best chance to pick up the 10 wickets," added Rahul during the post-stumps press conference.
He, however, conceded that a score of around 400 would have placed India in a much stronger position.
"At tea, there was a little bit of discussion on how much we need, or whether to give them (England) a few overs to bat and pick up a few wickets. Ideally we would have wanted about 40 runs more," said Rahul.
India lost three lower-order batters for naught, while Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur too could only manage a handful of runs as the visitors slumped from 333/5 to 364 all out.
Rahul added that he was in awe of Pant's batting and was just admiring his audacious strokeplay standing at the other end.
"You just stand there and admire and sometimes scratch your head about the shots that he plays. He has his unique style of play. He enjoys his game. He has a style that none of us will understand in this room. Just let him be Rishabh Pant," said Rahul of Pant, who, despite playing conservatively, managed 118 off just 140 balls.
England pacer Josh Tongue, who ran through the tail to return figures of 3/72, said the first 30-40 minutes in the opening session on the final day would be crucial but the general feeling in the team was to go for victory.
"Go for the chase tomorrow, that's the messaging in the dressing room. There's no reason we can't chase it down. Hopefully we won't be in a situation to play out for a draw. See where we are at lunch and calculate," he said.

Reflecting on his eventful tenure as BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly has revealed that he expected a "certain kind of toughness and stubbornness" from the then Board secretary and current ICC chairman Jay Shah but was left impressed with his "honesty" and resolve to do things "properly".
Ganguly and Shah were colleagues at the world's richest cricket board from October 2019 to September 2022, navigating a tumultuous phase caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought sporting activity to a grinding halt for few months.
"He (Jay) had his own way of doing things but the best thing about him was he wanted to do things properly for Indian cricket," Ganguly told PTI in an exclusive interview at his residence in Kolkata.
"See, he had the power, the support, so you expected certain kind of toughness, stubbornness from him but he would do things for Indian cricket," the iconic former captain explained, referring to Shah's status of being the son of Home Minister Amit Shah.
It was the first time that both Ganguly and Shah held BCCI positions. Before that, Ganguly had headed the Cricket Association of Bengal, while Shah was an office-bearer in the Gujarat Cricket Association.
While Ganguly was replaced by another former Test player Roger Binny in 2022, Shah continued as BCCI secretary till November 2024 before taking over as the youngest ever ICC chairman at 36 years of age.
Asked about how the power dynamics and relationship was between the scion of a political family and a celebrated cricket star, Ganguly said they shared a cordial equation which has continued to this date.
"Relationship was very good. It's still very good. When he came in September 2019...he was a young boy, straight from Gujarat CA, very cooperative, approachable," he recalled.
"Obviously, he had opinions and rightfully so, he wanted to do things and still does, he is the ICC chairman and it is a bigger post." Ganguly believes that with time, Shah became better at his job.
"He is very supportive of players. He got better as he learnt. The good thing about him was he wanted to do good for the game," the soon-to-be-53 superstar said.
The Kolkata-based legend said Shah was acutely aware of his status and always wanted to carry out his work in a principled manner.
"He is very honest, he always had the thought (about) who he was at the back of his mind, what baggage he carried. So, he wanted to do things rightfully and properly all the time.
"All of us made mistakes, I did, he did. It was never intentional but the game never stopped," Ganguly added.
The former captain said they do bump into each other occasionally.
"Obviously, he has progressed, he is the ICC Chairman now. You see him at times because you live in different cities. I am not involved in administration, I wish him the best.
"I saw him in England this time for a little bit. I meet him in ICC meetings because I am the chair of the (ICC cricket) committee and he wants the game to grow and go forward."
