Ruturaj Gaikwad: Watch new CSK captain's first reaction after becoming MS Dhoni's successor

Ruturaj Gaikwad: Watch new CSK captain's first reaction after becoming MS Dhoni's successor

In a significant announcement that took the cricket world by surprise, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) revealed Ruturaj Gaikwad as their captain for the upcoming 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, marking the end of MS Dhoni's iconic leadership era. The revelation comes as the franchise prepares for a new chapter, acknowledging the need for transition with Dhoni nearing the twilight of his illustrious cricket career, set to turn 43 in July. While they did try it once with Ravindra Jadeja in IPL 2022, it didn't work, with the franchise finishing 9th on the table. The following season, with Dhoni once again at the helm, the franchise won their 5th title. Maybe, Gaikwad will prove to be a worthy successor.

The opener, who has been part of CSK since 2019 and has played 52 matches for the team, steps into a role vacated by MS Dhoni, arguably the IPL's most successful captain. The Maharashtra batter, although experienced in leading at the domestic level, faces the daunting task of filling Dhoni's considerable shoes. However, at 27, Gaikwad is primed to lead, and his captaincy is buoyed by the continued presence of Dhoni in a mentorship capacity on the field, ensuring a smoother transition for the franchise.

Expressing his sentiments upon his appointment as captain, Gaikwad acknowledged both the honour and the immense responsibility that comes with the role. "Feels good! It's a privilege obviously. I feel, more than that, it's a huge responsibility but I am really excited because of the kind of group we have. Everyone's experienced enough, so not much of a thing for me to do. Plus, I have Mahi (MS Dhoni) bhai in the team, Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) bhai as well, Ajju (Ajinkya Rahane) bhai as well, who's been a great captain to guide me. So, nothing much to worry, just looking forward to enjoy it," Gaikwad shared.

As Gaikwad steps into his new role, his outlook is one of optimism and readiness, buoyed by the support of seasoned players like Jadeja and Rahane, along with the legendary Dhoni himself. With IPL 2024, CSK are looking to start a new chapter, and all eyes will be on Gaikwad as he embarks on this leadership journey with one of the most celebrated teams in IPL history.
