Two Scottish football referees come out as gay to bring change in football

Two Scottish referees Craig Napier and Lloyd Wilson have come out as gay on Thursday in the hope to see a cultural change in football.

The 32-year old referee Napier was the first to announce his sexuality and was quickly followed by fellow official Wilson.

With the announcement, Napier became the first openly gay figure in Scottish men's professional football since Justin Fashanu who used to play for Airdrie and Hearts in the mid-1990s.

Napier and Wilson said that they were inspired by Adelaide player Josh Cavallo and Jake Daniels who is UK's first active professional men's player and came out as gay last month.

Scottish Football Association posted a video on its Twitter account in which Napier said, "It's something that I've obviously lived with for a long time. It's been a difficult journey to get to this point, but over the last couple of years, it's become a lot easier."
