FIFA World Cup 2022, MAR vs ESP: Morocco into the quarters, beat Spain 3-0 on penalties

The FIFA World Cup 2022 witnessed yet another high-octane encounter in the Round of 16 as Morocco went through to the quarter-finals by winning 3-0 on penalties against 2010 champions Spain at the Education City Stadium in Qatar, on Tuesday.

Morocco, who had conceded just one goal before this match managed to see out another clean sheet in what was a relentless 120 minutes of football against La Furia Roja. The Atlas Lions then went on to win it in penalties courtesy of another goalkeeper masterclass by Yassine Bounou who saved 2 penalties for the Moroccans.

This is the first time the Moroccans have qualified for the World Cup quarter-finals and are just the 4th African team in the tournament's history to have made it to the quarter-final stage.

It was Morocco who had the better start in the game but the Atlas Lions failed to get anything out of their chances in the first half. The Spaniards came out in the second half looking dangerous and forced Morocco to defend for their lives for the rest of the game.

However, the match had to be decided by a penalty shootout after Pablo Sarabia's shot in the very last minute of extra time knicked the post and went out in the end.

Penalties and Spain clearly don't go hand-in-hand as this was La Furia Roja's 4th loss from penalties out of the 5 penalty shootouts they have experienced so far.
