Blue cards set to be introduced for sin-bins in football: Report

Football has utilised yellow and red cards since the 1970 World Cup, but there are rumours that a new card may be added to the rules.

The International Football Association Board has approved the introduction of a blue card as part of a trial for sin-bins, according to The Telegraph.

A player receiving a blue card would be out of the game for ten minutes, in addition to the existing yellow and red cards. Additionally, there's a chance of combining colours, which could muddy the palette.

A player will also be issued a red card and will be eliminated from the game permanently if they come back from the sin bin after receiving another blue card. Conversely, one yellow and one blue combined would result in a red.

The tryouts, which might begin next season, will not include top-tier tournaments; instead, cup competitions may be volunteered for. The blue card is scheduled to be introduced in select FA Cup and Women's FA Cup matches, according to reports in England.

The purpose of this is to evaluate the effectiveness of the discipline and identify any potential future issues before implementing it more widely.

The sport's governing body decided in November of last year to introduce the trials, which have already taken place in amateur and youth football in Wales and England, to higher levels of the game.
