Duleep Trophy Semifinals: West Zone vs Central Zone Showdown

Bengaluru, Sep 3 (PTI) — The dynamic trio of Shreyas Iyer, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shardul Thakur are poised to make their mark when the star-studded West Zone competes against Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy semifinal on Thursday. Shreyas Iyer, who missed out on India's Asia Cup squad, is eager to start the season on a high note and keep himself in contention for upcoming crucial series against the West Indies and Australia. Although it has been a frustrating period for Iyer, with his impressive performance for Punjab Kings not resonating with selectors for the Asia Cup, converting this frustration into runs could benefit West Zone. Yashasvi Jaiswal, meanwhile, seeks to sustain his red-ball game ahead of upcoming home series assignments despite having secured his place in the Test team. His last major outing was the fifth Test against England at The Oval, and he awaits his turn for international appearances until the West Indies series. Shardul Thakur, leading the West Zone, aims to improve his prospects after lukewarm performances in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, ensuring his presence on the selectors' radar. Similarly, other key players like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Tanush Kotian aim for strong performances to regain national attention. Although West Zone appears formidable on paper, Central Zone will not be easy opponents. They may regain leadership from Dhruv Jurel if he recovers from a recent groin injury. Even in Jurel's absence, their stand-in skipper, Rajat Patidar, alongside Danish Malewar and Shubham Sharma, delivered impressive centuries last week. Their competent bowling squad, led by Harsh Dubey, Khaleel Ahmed, and Deepak Chahar, faces the daunting task of challenging a strong West Zone batting line-up on a slow, smooth pitch at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. Although the absence of Kuldeep Yadav, who has joined the Asia Cup squad, is a setback, Central Zone remains determined. West Zone Squad: Shardul Thakur (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Aarya Desai, Harvik Desai (wicket-keeper), Shreyas Iyer, Shivalik Sharma, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Jaymeet Patel, Manan Hingrajia, Saurabh Nawale (wicket-keeper), Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Dharmandrasinh Jadeja, Tushar Deshpande, Arzan Nagwaswala. Central Zone Squad: Dhruv Jurel (c/wk), Rajat Patidar (vc), Aryan Juyal, Danish Malewar, Sanjeet Desai, Aditya Thakare, Deepak Chahar, Saransh Jain, Ayush Pandey, Shubham Sharma, Yash Rathod, Harsh Dubey, Manav Suthar, Khaleel Ahmed. North Zone vs South Zone The absence of Tilak Varma, who has departed for Asia Cup preparations, alongside injuries to Vysakh Vijayakumar and R Sai Kishore, slightly weakens South Zone. They will rely on performances from N Jagadeesan, Devdutt Padikkal, and Salman Nizar, who recently achieved a remarkable feat in the Kerala Cricket League. North Zone also contends with the absence of key pacers Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, who are part of the Asia Cup squad. In their stead, India pacer Anshul Kamboj is expected to feature. North Zone will need substantial contributions from Ayush Badoni, skipper Ankit Kumar, and Yash Dhull, who shone in the quarterfinals. South Zone Squad: Mohammed Azharuddeen (C), Tanmay Agarwal, Devdutt Padikkal, Mohit Kale, Salman Nizar, Narayan Jagadeesan, Tripurana Vijay, Tanay Thyagarajan, Vasuki Koushik, Nidheesh MD, Ricky Bhui, Basil NP, Gurjapneet Singh, Snehal Kauthankar, Ankit Sharma, Shaikh Rasheed. North Zone Squad: Ankit Kumar (C), Shubham Khajuria, Ayush Badoni, Yash Dhull, Ankit Kalsi, Nishant Sandhu, Sahil Lotra, Mayank Dagar, Yudhvir Singh Charak, Anshul Kamboj, Auqib Nabi, Kanhaiya Wadhawan. Matches commence at 9:30 AM. — PTI UNG PM
