Women's Ashes 2023: Australia take 4-0 lead after beating England by 89 runs in one-off Test

Australia women's team secured an emphatic 89-run victory over England in the one-off Ashes Test match, solidifying a commanding 4-0 lead in the multi-format series.

Spinner Ash Gardner delivered a standout performance, claiming remarkable figures of 8-66 as England succumbed to 178-all out before lunch on the fifth day at Trent Bridge.

Gardner's remarkable feat elevated her match tally to an impressive 12 wickets, following her earlier four-wicket haul in England's first innings.

Danni Wyatt led England's batting with a top score of 54 before being dismissed lbw by Gardner, paving the way for Australia to seal the win in just 21 overs on the final day.

England, resuming at 116-5 after a late collapse on day four, required another 152 runs for victory. However, Wyatt and nightwatcher Kate Cross's partnership of 25 for the sixth wicket was interrupted when Cross fell for 13, caught behind off Gardner, who went on to claim all five remaining wickets.

England's innings rapidly deteriorated from 151-6 to 178 all out, as Wyatt struggled to find support from the lower order. Amy Jones contributed just four runs before being stumped by Alyssa Healy, Sophie Ecclestone was dismissed lbw for 10, and Lauren Filer was bowled for a duck.

The defeat felt particularly harsh for Tammy Beaumont, who scored a monumental 208 in England's first innings, and Sophie Ecclestone, who took a remarkable 10-wicket haul in the match but was overshadowed by Gardner's outstanding performance.

The series will continue with three T20s and three one-day internationals, each worth two points, commencing at Edgbaston on Saturday, July 1.
