Vidarbha advance to Ranji Trophy final against Mumbai after semifinal victory

In an exhilarating semifinal showdown of the Ranji Trophy, Vidarbha clinched a victory over Madhya Pradesh by 62 runs, thereby securing their spot in the final against the formidable Mumbai team. The triumph was largely attributed to the exceptional performance of Vidarbha's pace bowlers, Aditya Thakare and Yash Thakur, who decimated the Madhya Pradesh batting lineup on the final day of the match.

Madhya Pradesh, who needed 93 runs to win with four wickets in hand at the end of the fourth day, succumbed to the pressure exerted by Thakare and Thakur. The pace duo made quick work of the opposition, dismissing them for 258 runs in 81.3 overs, thus ending their aspirations of reaching the Ranji Trophy final for the third time.

This victory marks Vidarbha's third appearance in the Ranji Trophy final, with their previous two outings resulting in championship wins against Delhi (2017-18) and Saurashtra (2018-19). The team's journey to the final has been nothing short of remarkable, with each player contributing significantly to their success.

Madhya Pradesh, the 2021-22 Ranji champions, faced a daunting target of 321 runs for victory. Despite the loss of six wickets, the team had hopes of staging a comeback. However, Thakare and Thakur, leveraging the early morning conditions, exploited the bounce and movement off the pitch to dismantle the opposition's batting order.

The initial blow on the final day was dealt by Thakare, who dismissed overnight batter Kumar Kartikeya for a duck. Anubhav Agarwal soon followed, falling victim to Thakare's precise bowling. With Madhya Pradesh teetering at 234 for 8, their chances of advancing to the final faded.

Efforts by Saransh Jain to salvage the innings were in vain, as he was quickly dismissed by Yash Thakur, further tightening Vidarbha's grip on the match. Kulwant Khejroliya's departure sealed the victory for Vidarbha, sparking celebrations among the team led by Akshay Wadkar.

Looking ahead, Vidarbha is poised to face Mumbai, a team with a storied history of 41 Ranji Trophy championships, in what promises to be a riveting final starting March 10.
