Suryakumar Yadav: Indian batter emerges as standout performer, says he's glad he won it for Team India

In a pivotal moment for India's T20I series against the West Indies, Suryakumar Yadav emerged as the standout performer, guiding the team to a crucial victory. Trailing 2-0 in the five-match series and staring at a rare bilateral T20I defeat, India found themselves in a challenging position. With the target set at 160, the odds seemed against them, especially on a wicket that progressively slowed down.

The early dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal in the opening over further exacerbated India's predicament. However, Suryakumar Yadav's entry onto the field quickly shifted the dynamics. With finesse and determination, he elegantly dispatched his first two balls for a four and a six.

Yadav, who holds the top spot in the T20I rankings, showcased resilience and skill as he counteracted the varied challenges posed by the West Indies bowlers. His impressive innings of 83 runs off 44 deliveries not only anchored the chase but also reinstated his prowess after some recent underwhelming performances during the India tour of the West Indies.

Remarkably, a significant portion of Yadav's shots, approximately 52 percent, were directed behind square, showcasing his adeptness at manipulating the field. Reflecting on his performance, Yadav stated, "It was really important to be myself when I went in to bat in the powerplay, that’s what the team management also wanted. I have practised these (ramps and scoops) strokes a lot and I love doing that."

The departure of Shubman Gill within the powerplay added to the challenge, but Yadav, alongside his Mumbai Indians teammate Tilak Varma, revitalized India's innings. Their partnership yielded an impressive 87 runs for the third wicket, spanning 50 deliveries. Yadav praised Varma's contribution, highlighting their familiarity and understanding of each other's batting styles.

As the match unfolded, Yadav revealed the mindset within the dressing room before the must-win encounter. He acknowledged the weight of the fact that India had never suffered three consecutive T20I defeats, yet emphasized the team's determination. "It was running on the back of my mind (that India had never lost three T20Is in a row) but at the same time we spoke in the team meeting, our captain said someone needs to put their hand up and win the match, glad I was able to do that."

With Yadav's resurgent performance leading the way, India successfully rekindled their momentum in the T20I series, setting the stage for an intriguing contest in the subsequent matches.
