Steve Smith opens up on taking up opener’s role for Australia ahead of West Indies Test series

With David Warner bowing out of Test and ODI cricket, his on-field buddy and Aussie batter Steve Smith stepped up and opted to fill in as an opener.

With a test series against West Indies around the corner, Smith was picked as the opener over Matt Renshaw and Cameron Bancroft.

“Since I guess Marnus has been playing at number three, I have been waiting to bat for quite a long period of time and I do not really like waiting to bat,” Smith said.

Smith also spoke about freeing up the number 4 spot for Cameron Green.

“I spoke to Andrew McDonald and Pat Cummins about the possibility of opening for Australia. I told them that I was dead serious and with Cameron Green in the squad, I can open the batting with him batting at the no.4 slot,” he told FoxCricket.

If Smith takes the opening spot against West Indies in the upcoming Test series, he will do so for the first time in his 16-year-long first-class career for Australia.
