South Africa may miss out on directly qualifying for the ODI World Cup, withdraw from Australia series

Cricket Australia announced on Wednesday that South Africa has withdrawn from the ODI series against them, which was scheduled to be played in January 2023.

The Australian board in a statement said that South Africa Cricket had requested to reschedule the 3 ODIs, which were due to take place on 12, 14 and 17 January, to avoid a clash with South Africa's domestic T20 league. However, due to a packed international calendar, no alternative dates could be made available.

It has now put Proteas' direct qualification for the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 in doubt as the ODI series was part of the ICC Super League. Since the ODI series will not be played before the qualification cut-off date in May 2023, Cricket South Africa has also agreed that Australia will be awarded the competition points pending ICC approval.

The Proteas though will play a three-test match series between December 17, 2022, to January 8, 2023, in Australia.
