Shamar Joseph: West Indies' latest sensation clinches ICC Player of the Month award after Gabba heroics

In an inspiring ascent to cricketing prominence, Shamar Joseph has etched his name in history as the first West Indian to be honored with the Men's ICC Player of the Month award, following his remarkable performance in the Test series against Australia. At just 24 years old, Joseph's entry into the West Indies squad was nothing short of phenomenal, marked by his unforgettable debut that saw the dismissal of the legendary Steve Smith with his very first delivery in international cricket.

Joseph's inaugural Test series was a showcase of his exceptional talent and determination. In Adelaide, he claimed five wickets in his first innings, including the wickets of Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, and Smith, announcing his arrival on the international stage with authority. Yet, it was his performance in the second Test in Brisbane that truly captured the cricketing world's imagination.

Tasked with defending a modest total of 216 in the second innings, Joseph displayed remarkable skill and composure, securing 7/68 – four of which were clean bowled – to lead the West Indies to a nail-biting victory, bowling Australia out just eight runs shy of the target. This victory not only secured a historic 1-1 series draw but also earned Joseph the Player of the Series accolade, a testament to his pivotal role in the team's success.

Reflecting on his achievement, Joseph shared, "To get such an award on the world stage feels special. I totally enjoyed every moment of that experience playing for West Indies in Australia, especially the magic of the final day at the Gabba. Taking the wicket to win the match was a dream!"

Following his heroics Down Under, the West Indian star also got rewarded with an IPL contract as well, with the Lucknow Super Giants picking him as replacement for the Englishman, Mark Wood.
