Azhar Mahmood has been appointed as acting head coach of Pakistan's men's side

Pakistan have announced former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood as their new acting red-ball head coach.

Azhar steps into the new role following a long stint as bowling coach and assistant head coach of Pakistan's men's side and will serve in this position until the conclusion of his current contract.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) expressed confidence in Mahmood's ability to excel in his new role, highlighting his extensive cricketing background and successful coaching tenure. "Azhar Mahmood brings an impressive portfolio of experience to the table," read a statement from the PCB. "His role as assistant head coach has been crucial to the team's strategic planning. His deep understanding of the game, coupled with international exposure and success in the English county circuit, makes him highly suitable for this position."

With a reputation cemented by two County Championship titles, Azhar's leadership and tactical skills have been well-recognized. The PCB expects that under his guidance, the red-ball squad will enhance its global standing, grow stronger, and achieve greater discipline and performance.

Mahmood takes over from former fast bowler and 1992 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup winner Aaqib Javed, who had been serving as red-ball coach after Australian Jason Gillespie's departure last year. Mahmood's immediate task is to prepare the team for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship cycle, beginning with South Africa's visit to Pakistan for a two-match series later this year.
