Ishan Kishan takes a break from cricket due to mental fatigue

India's wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan decided to step back from the upcoming Test series against South Africa, citing mental fatigue as the primary reason. Kishan's decision came after a prolonged period of being part of the Indian squad, often stepping in only when the regular players were unavailable.

According to a report by the Indian Express, Kishan approached the Indian team management last week in South Africa, requesting a break. He expressed that the continuous travel and lack of consistent game time over the past year had taken a toll on his mental well-being. The team management, in consultation with the selectors, respected Kishan’s decision and granted his request.

A source, quoted by the Indian Express, confirmed, “He informed the team management that he is experiencing mental fatigue and desires a break from cricket. Everyone was in agreement with his decision.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier attributed ‘personal reasons’ for Kishan's withdrawal from the Test series. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, in a press release, stated, “Ishan Kishan has requested the BCCI to be released from the upcoming Test series against South Africa citing personal reasons. The wicketkeeper has subsequently been withdrawn from the Test squad.”

Since January 3, 2023, Kishan has been a constant presence in the Indian squad, participating in various series and tournaments, including the 50-over World Cup and the T20I series against Australia, where he achieved two half-centuries. However, his inclusion in playing XI was not consistent.

In South Africa, despite being part of the T20I series, Kishan was overlooked in favour of Jitesh Sharma. With the Indian cricket team's packed schedule, including series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Australia, and tours to England and the West Indies, Kishan's opportunities to play were limited.

This decision to step away reflects the growing awareness and importance of addressing mental health in sports, particularly in cricket, where the demands of continuous travel and performance pressures can be challenging. Kishan's move to prioritize his mental well-being sets a significant precedent in the cricketing world.
